Kinda agree. I pretty much antishipped Sterek because the fans were so overwhelmingly vocal and entitled.

I feel this way too sometimes. This was why I hated Remus/Sirius back in the day. It wasn't canon, it wasn't "almost canon." And people insisting it was made me go from not shipping to actively anti-shipping.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was never invested in this ship, but from the way fandom portrayed it, I thought, huh, maybe there's hints, but after a re-read, I'm just like lol where people? Where? Because Sirius is a little shit and Remus kept to himself mostly (what with dealing with his werewolf issues) like...it's just not hinted at all. If I would assume anyone, it might have been James/Sirius (and that's only because they were very loyal to each other and I would think the feelings were more one sided than anything else).

But none of those are my ships so shrug.

Obv JKR is problematic and all, but I hate how many people I've seen recently add queerbaiting into her list of sins while specifically referencing Sirius and Remus. Sirius and Remus were not queerbaiting, you just latched onto the first two unattached hot adult men in the series and shipped them. That fandom loved them does not mean JKR was required to make them a pairing and I never saw anything in the actual text that suggested she was trying to imply that they were.

Same here. It's one of the reasons Stony became my NOTP.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for most of the pairings here, but with Morgan/Reid from "Criminal Minds", I do think there is enough in their interactions on the show to where building and developing that into a canon relationship wouldn't have exactly been out of the blue.

Course, I also never expected the show would make them canon or anything of that sort, so... I just shipped them on my own time and left it at that.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I mean I remember it coming out that at some point Reid was almost made bi, but this was shut down by the execs.

I know Merlin/Arthur has a lot of shipping potential for obvious reason but I can't help feel how much I'd be pissed off if that was my ship and "basically canon" was legit. Merlin spends the entire series lying about who he is, with Arthur actively hating who he really is and only gets to come clean in the final episode? And then Arthur "dies"? It's not exactly a great basis for a "canon" ship. Yeah...this is why I'd turn to fanfic instead.

You expressed it exactly. Not just that, but there's the buildup about how great Camelot's going to be and Arthur's the great awesome king, but it turns out that's BS and he rules for a hot minute and Gwen's the one who actually does any ruling worth a damn?? Then follow Gwen, for Pete's sake, don't waste our time with Arthur.

I don't remember the show exactly, but they were one of my main outliers by shipping potential when I first saw this secret as a comment.

Haha, yeah. Overly invested slashers (lbr femslashers and get shippers don't do this nearly as much) can be a HUGE force for making me hate ships. I'm not entirely sure if my "sirius black is asexual" headcanon is the result of my own analysis, or if it was some kind of reaction against the "SIRIUS AND REMUS ARE CANONICALLY GAY TOGETHER AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE LITERALLY EVIL AND A HOMOPHOBE" people way back when

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
You've never seen dudebro anime fans arguing over their waifus, have you? Or how nasty het vs. het ship wars can get.

I can assure you, hetshippers and f/f shippers do this, too. they just aren't as visible in slash-heavy fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ships like this are always boring AF to me, too. A rarely ever find juggernaut ships appealing.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't start hating the ships, but I do kinda side-eye people who write long essays about how these two dudes staring at each other for more than three seconds or wearing the same kind of shirt means that they're secretly banging.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Big same.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I end up hating these ships, but I do absolutely end up rolling my eyes at the shippers insistence that they're 'practically canon', especially when they have canon love-interests they actually very clearly love and enjoy spending time with(And in a lot of cases treat better than the other half of the fandom ship).

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The way people’s shipping bias often shapes their perspective on pretty much everything in canon can be really frustrating. That said, it has very little effect on how I feel about a ship. If I ship it then I ship it. How other shippers conduct themselves doesn’t change what I love about the ship.

Also, of the ships you listed, the only one I would say has “barely any canon support” is Sterek.

That’s not to say the others were “practically canon.” More that in a different world, if the writers had decided to take the story in that direction, they wouldn’t have had to change much to get to a place where it would make sense and feel consistent with the text.

Wait...people think Reed/Morgan is 'basically canon'?

I haven't seen Merlin recently enough to really remember what Merlin and Arthur's chemistry was like, and I can sort of see Sherlock/John, though mostly in the original canon, not Sherlock... (Haven't seen Teen Wolf - that's what the last one is, right?)

But Reed/Morgan? Don't see it at all. (Don't really see chemistry between Reed and anybody (even his canon love interests), and Morgan/Garcia is it for him...)

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-10-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on Reed/Morgan. I don't see any ships between any of the main characters, honestly. I could see Morgan/Garcia I guess in that I can see why others ship, but to me that's just friendship very clearly.

LMAO, Merlin and Arthur have barely any canon support? Get out of here, the entire show was about that and the people involved even admitted to it in the end.

I can't speak for the rest, but Sherlock the TV series was notorious for queerbaiting, so I'm not sure it's a fair add. Unless you're referring to the canon as a whole, I suppose?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly wouldn't care except that some of those shippers make a point of saying that people who don't see it are some combination of homophobic (for not seeing it) and misogynist (because not seeing it is shaming women for shipping it.)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-07 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Bringing social justice lingo into shipping was a mistake.
