Grad school Statement of Purpose

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Grad students, how do you write a statement of purpose? I'm lost. I'm applying for a creative writing MFA. The examples of statements of purpose online are really different. Is this like a cover letter, a persuasive argument (like "You should accept me because I'm a nice person who never cheats at Scrabble"), or proof of your ability to write?

Basically you say what you hope to achieve in the program, why you think this program would be good for you achieving those goals, and why they should think you're worth being accepted to the program. They should probably be asking for a writing sample separately for which you'd want to submit your best work to date (I submitted my capstone paper from the undergrad program when I applied to the history grad program I'm in)

Thank you for the advice! You're right. The writing sample is what they're really judging me on.

I honestly don't remember having to write one but that was 18 years ago and I might have forgotten or purposefully blocked it out. Sorry.

No worries! Thanks for trying to dig out the memories. :)

My statement of purpose was a little different than other grad schools. But the advice I was given across the board is tell a story about what brought you to here.

tmi hemorrhoids

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
TMI TMI TMI

I got one. I noticed it yesterday. It is making sitting very annoying. It doesn't hurt but it aches and itches. I think it is an external one. I can physically push it back into my anus and then it doesn't hurt as much.

I am using preparation h, witch hazel wipes, and a heating pad. Not sure if it is helping yet. I am terrified of a future BM. When should I go to a doctor about this?

If the cream hasn't helped in two weeks or if you start having them regularly. No reason to worry, if this is your first one. Sitting less if possible (and all the usual health advice) might help as well.

I have had them before but like once a year sort of thing and never as bad as this one. Meaning I can feel them with my finger but they don't itch or anything.

I've had one before and it was not a picnic. I think it was about 2 weeks before it went away. I think bathing in epsom salt really helped for me. Good luck!

I have one, I've had it for years (I have IBS-A). This is what I do: 1.) Use witch hazel pads and Preparation H ointment for bad flare ups, they really help, 2.) Add more water and fiber to your diet but add the fiber gradually, and 3.) Keep the area CLEAN. If you are itchy, you are not clean. Use baby wipes when you poop. Wrap a wipe around your fingertip and clean yourself carefully, use a witch hazel pad to finish and then pat dry (don't wipe) with clean toilet paper. If you're irritated and dry back there, use a little coconut oil on a cotton pad and dab the oil on. Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory. And finally, if things get worse or don't improve within a week or two, see a doctor.

Free friends activities?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm short on cash rn, but I still want to hang out with friends and I feel bad if they're constantly making dinner for me (I'm too short on cash to return the favor tbqh). What are some ideas for free friends activities? I have "going for a hike". Any other ideas?

Check out the events at your local library.

I don't know how feasible it is for you now, but I love going window shopping with my friends.

Nature trail, biking, if there are socially distant outdoor activities in your neighborhood or city, a lot of them tend to be free (say live music) -- that kind of thing I usually find through Instagram...I agree with checking the library or maybe meetup...

Not sure what's even open/going on where you live, but: movie night with a DVD from the library, free public lectures or exhibits, free day/night at a museum (if available), self-guided historic walking tour (maybe there's one you can download online), volunteer somewhere like a river cleanup or food pantry, free trial yoga/aerobics/whatever class.

If you can afford the ingredients, and you have a big enough kitchen, maybe bake together? I wouldn't because I hate sharing the kitchen, but some people love that. Boardgames and jigsaw puzzles are great for me and my friends, and things like that are always turning up at the local charity shops for a few dollars. There are even some little RPGs that are free, all you have to do is print out the instructions and go for it.
If you want to sit together and watch something, go for a free trial from some streaming service or another, there are so many to choose from (just put a reminder in your phone to cancel the service before it actually charges you anything!)

All the suggestions other people have made on this are good too.

Many museums around here offer free admittance one day a month, or regular free guided tours. Open Door Days for anything are cool (I once went to wastewater treatment plant because I saw a poster for their open door day on the tram; it ended up being really interesting, and after I participated in a simple quiz I even won a high quality towel, so that was a giant win). Art schools often have student exhibitions or performances. And check for community organized stuff, like fundraisers, exhibitions, performances, fairs, flea markets and so on.

... though I just realized that in times of Corona, all of those might be much rarer. :( Good luck!

TMI stomach/intestinal issues issues/bathroom issues/mentions of female hormones

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
So I've been not feeling well for more than a week now. It started with the beginning of my hormonal period last week, which lasted until Saturday. On top of that, I had a migraine, probably induced by a combination of hormones, lack of sleep, and cheese, that lasted from Thursday until Sunday night.

Anyway, probably due to the tramadol I was taking for the migraine, I was constipated Saturday and Sunday.

Late Sunday night/early Monday morning I started to feel nauseous. I thought it was the constipation. But as soon as that was finished I was suddenly having the opposite problem and also throwing up.

I haven't thrown up since about 7 this morning, but I've continued to be super nauseous and my stool is liquid.

I just don't know if it is worth seeing a doctor. It is probably just all the tramadol/asprin/tilenol I've been taking for days, I think. Honestly I've had a lot of headaches lately so I've been taking a lot of asprin lately, so my system may be just saying enough. But then again, maybe something is wrong and I should be worried?

If the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours, it might be time to at least call your doctor and ask if you should come in. Tramadol can cause nausea, but usually the problem with opoids is constipation, not diarrhea.

Be sure to stay hydrated and if your stomach is too upset, avoid rich foods for now. Clear soups like plain chicken broth, maybe with some ginger to help with the nausea. If you've been throwing up/having diarrhea a lot, then consider something with electrolytes, like Pedialyte. Electrolyte imbalance can mess you up and make you feel terrible.

Call your doctor and ask them. They will have better advice, and at least can advise you over the phone when/if to come in, way more accurately than anyone on the internet can.

Ritalin/similar meds

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've been put on ritalin, and right now I'm sitting at my computer and both my legs are bouncing incessantly. I've been doing this for like an hour.
I'm very used to stimming, but I feel like it's gotten a bit more intense since I started taking the ritalin? Has anyone here ever taken ritalin and experienced similar.

Re: Ritalin/similar meds

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have it due to ADHD? Usually getting high or overly stimulated by ritalin or other similar stimulants means they aren't the right drug for treatment, or the dosage is too high. What you're describing is a general side effect but not one that is generally associated with ADHD from what I can recall.
I'd bring it up with your doctor regardless as it's always a good thing to mention all side effects no matter how small they might seem when given a new prescription.
