Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
A relative posted this to FB and it's annoying the crap out of me:

https://i.imgur.com/xFTpsqB.jpg

[image is of a non-dairy case at the supermarket with the caption:
All these plant milk options and you still wanna drink an animal's titty milk that's not even meant for you?
]

Look. I understand lactose intolerance. I have minor issues with it myself that aren't enough to stop me from eating dairy. I'm perfectly fine with people who choose not to consume dairy products, for whatever reason. But doing so isn't the SUPERIOR option, you know? And the person who posted this isn't a vegan, isn't a vegetarian and she definitely eats dairy products, so WTF? Not to mention that if you're going to argue that humans didn't evolve to drink milk (much less animal milk) into adulthood, they didn't evolve to do a lot of things, such as shit-posting on FB and smoking weed, both of which she's likely doing right this minute.

For the record, I'm not in love with a lot of plant milk options, I want real cheese made from milk and a lot of non-dairy options don't taste good in tea, IMO.

Yeah, that's the thing, like... I like the taste of cow milk. More than plant milks. That's not me shitting on plant milk, I even prefer them in some applications (coconut milk bakes like a dream, oat milk is great on cereal, etc.), but if I'm just having a glass of milk? Or adding it to coffee/tea, or making pasta sauces, what have you? I prefer cow milk. I like the taste! It's that simple.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Coconut milk is delicious in curries, I don't mind almond milk or oat milk, but I don't go out of my way to drink it. Plain milk is fine, and cheaper where I am.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've tried a lot of soy, almond, coconut, oatmeal, and pea milk and I haven't liked any of them. I just prefer the taste of cow milk.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd seen cashew milk but hadn't heard of oatmeal milk or pea milk. Huh. Interesting.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oatmeal milk has this watery oatmeal taste and pea milk was kinda . . . chalky? It was a little strange. My sisters love pea milk though and didn't get what I was talking about when I said it was chalky.

Honestly, a lot of non-dairy items posing as dairy items don't cut it for me. I've tried non-dairy desserts and non-dairy creamers, and they're meh. I don't mind vanilla or chocolate flavored non-dairy "milks" like soy or almond, but I just don't buy the stuff as often as I used to.

But yeah, food choice superiority is always annoying.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I do get where you're coming from, I really do. I abhor the moral high ground superiority schtick that people grab onto with veganism and vegetarianism - and I AM a vegan and have been for decades. I've always been chill with other people's choices, like the info is out there and we each have to decide and shouting at people isn't going to force them to do what you think is right.

However, at the same time you can't say that the two things are equivocal. If you're looking at climate change, then veganism is in fact the superior option because it dramatically reduces the amount of GHGs associated with your food. Apply that to the whole human population where veganism or flexitarianism is a viable lifestyle, and suddenly we have a fighting chance. Unlike now, when we are pretty much screwed. If you want scientific corroboration for that go out and look it up because at this point it's a message being shouted by most of the scientific community including the IPCC.

We have definitely evolved to have animals in our diet. I have no beef with that (no pun intended). But at the same time, the meat industry is absolutely fucking horrific. We're very shielded from its realities in day to day life, but if you had to watch the process from beginning to end I'm pretty sure the majority of people would be very upset by it and find it ethically questionable.

Now again, how much you incorporate these things into the decisions you make about your diet is very much up to you. Purely objectively though, I'm afraid plant milks are a superior choice. It's just smug people posting annoying memes on facebook obfuscates that fact.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
You do know the deforestation and shit that goes into things like almond milk right? Not saying there isn't issues with the meat industry, but acting like all plant based options are perfect or even not as bad is a bit naive.

I've been a vegetarian for 25+ years, and this is bs. Does the average American eat too much meat? Yep! Are CAFOs sustainable or humane? Fuck no! Are slaughterhouse working conditions inhumane and super dangerous? You betcha!

Is there a lot of marginal land under intense cultivation using unsustainable petroleum-derived fertilizers, pesticides that were originally developed as weapons of war, and depleted groundwater reservoirs? Fuck yes there are.

Are the agricultural workers who harvest our produce treated like garbage? Hoo boy.

Do monocultures destroy entire ecosystems and leave weird green deserts with no bugs or animals behind? Do big businesses drive small farms out of business as they seek to control every aspect of food production? Obviously.

And that's just the US.

I have a moral objection to eating animals no matter how great their lives were prior to their ending up on a plate, but pasturing ruminants on marginal land can actual restore soil and make non-chemically derived fertilizer.

Killing off or sterilizing all the world's domestic livestock and letting them die out would leave agriculture massively fucked even if we composted every human turd (and every human corpse) from here to doomsday, not to mention lead to widespread malnutrition.

Oh, you're a fact free vegan. Cool.

Most plant milks are horrible for the environment from both a natural resources standpoint and a ecological sustainability standpoint, and any brownie points they get for not off-gassing when they're on the tree/stalk are more than lost in the process of shipping them around the world so vegans in Minnesota and London can enjoy their Almond Dream. Unlike cows and goats, you can't grow almonds and coconuts anywhere at any time of year.

When you factor in the human rights violations inherent in producing your superior vegan food, suddenly your moral high ground is a graveyard full of dead migrants and indigenous children who died of starvation.

Drink your plant milk because you prefer the taste. If you're concerned about climate change, support your local agriculture and help elect politicians that will hold the oil companies and other corporations accountable for their actions.

I got a new laptop in August and it's been randomly restarting once a week or so and lagging when I play games, and I'm so fucking pissed off. This computer was $2,000, and I can't play Assassin's Creed 3? Which came out EIGHT YEARS AGO???
It's within warranty, I can take it back to the bloke who sold it to me and he'll fix it or I can get my money back, but I'll still be out of pocket for everything I paid for setup, and all the time and fuss of setting up a new computer. I'm so annoyed, and the worst part is? I could have avoided this by not buying a computer from this particular guy, but my dad was pushing me.
Uuuuuuuugh it's so tiresome.

I can't stand when people drain macaroni or pasta and they do it too quickly. So the water sort of backs up in the sink at the bottom of the colander. SO GROSS.

... what kind of garbage-ass kitchen sinks do these people have that they can't take one pot of water down them without backing up?

A fellow teacher has taken to dropping by desk almost daily for the singluar purpose of bitching about the school management. He is very righteously convinced of his hurt and victimhood, and I want so badly to tell him to stop acting like a fourteen year old girl already.

I have a few coworkers who take off their masks when talking to me. It drives me insane, especially because these are the coworkers that are constantly going out and don't believe in taking all necessary precautions.

Yup. Sorry. Don't like plant milks. Actually don't like regular milk either. But even though I'm lactose intolerant, I have no intention of completely giving up cheese or ice cream. Already had to mostly give up chocolate due to migraines and it is killing me. Cheese and ice cream are too good to give up.

That's annoying, yes.
I put almond milk on my cereal (it's about the only option other than soy, here), but my cats will. Not. Touch it.

They love to get a little taste of cow milk, but almond milk makes them back off. Poor kitties! No more milk! Heh.

It's funny - I like soy sauce and miso and edamame and tofu, but I cannot fucking stand soy milk.

Well, they're completely different flavors despite sharing a source.

My father won't just look up a fucking recipe. He's making a stew right now and he is not using a recipe, and it's not because he knows what he's doing. He has no clue what he's doing, but he's still not using a recipe!

Everything he makes turns out badly, because he doesn't use a recipe. He just fucking guesses everything. His process for cooking is to intuit everything about the process -- not from a place of "I'm a good cook who relies on my firm knowledge base to make tasty dishes," but from a place of, "I have no idea how to cook anything and everything I make turns out badly but I'm just going to keep relying on my fucking intuition to get the job done!"

Jesus christ.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-17 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Arrghh, that's so annoying. It's as though people want to be one of those amazing, intuitive cooks who don't need to follow a recipe or use measuring spoons and just toss everything in and it tastes great, but they don't realize that most people who are like that got that way by following recipes and learning how to cook first.

It must be frustrating to deal with the crappy end result. Does your dad acknowledge that his food doesn't taste good, or is he in denial about that, too?

I belong to a local Facebook group and it's a nice resource when you need recommendations for stuff, things like that. But people have this super annoying habit that makes NO sense. Let's say they're trying to sell something like a piece of furniture. 99% of people who do this post a photo of varying quality and then... they don't say how much they're asking. It's not necessarily a OBO situation, so why not just say you've got a gently scuffed coffee table that's still pretty solid and it's $20?

Or even dumber, they're renting out a property and they'll have photos, a description that says it's 2 bed/1 bath in such-and-such neighborhood and then they don't say how much the rent is or what it includes. Like... why, you fucking idiots? Isn't that important information? Isn't that the first thing people want to know? JUST PUT THAT INFORMATION IN YOUR LISTING, YOU MORON.

Re: Petty annoyances thread

(Anonymous) 2020-10-17 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's so dumb, especially the rental thing. Unless I really wanted to rent the place or was desperate to rent any place, I'd probably just pass that one by.
