128. XD I gotta admit, I kinda agree with you. If it offends them so much, then they ought to not go see the movie. Not only will it preserve their personal experience of hte original work, but if enough of the fandom does that, the movie'll tank and the producers will REALLY know that they fucked up.

Re: 128

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing of it is though if the movie just plain flops, that doesn't mean they are going to attribute it to the whitewashing, so by writing letters and not seeing the movie that will at least make it clear why.

Also it is an effort to raise awareness about it because if you don't raise awareness this will never change whether the movie ends up tanking or not.

Re: 128

Then somebody ought to try to organize something like that. I think the point of the4 seecret is, he's tired of seeing the saw "BAWWWW HOLLYWOOD IS SO RACIST" posts from people who then don't do anything about it.

I mean, seriously - if you're gonna stand up for a cause, you might as well get a stepladder so everybody can see you.

Re: 128

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Um that is what the letter campaign is trying to do and to organize that. People are doing something.

I think the person is saying that people should just shut up about it and saying "Why do you guys bother, you can't do anything", which I find a bit more contemptible then people complaining and not doing anything.

And by the way, Hollywood is racist, and complacency and apathy helps keep it that way.

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hollywood is exactly as racist as me, you and everybody else in the world. Theirs is just more blatant.

The letter-writing campagin is a good thing, but it should make itself better known - I'll admit that I'm only a casual fan, but this is the first I've heard of it. It needs to get out there more, so it can get something done.

And, just for the record, I stand my by interpretation of the secret. Feel free to do the same.

But how will they get the word out if they don't talk about it? Icons and lj posts help get the word out about the issues so that people will write letters. But you're saying that they shouldn't talk about it, or at least only in certain ways. So it looks like fandom can't win with you.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I kind of resent this remark? Why the fuck should the fact that Hollywood is "just as racist" as "everybody else" be an excuse for this shitty whitewashing? And frankly, I think the letter-writing campaign is doing a fine job. It's only existed for a short time, and you've heard of it now, amiright?

Growing up Asian and never seeing people like me on the television, knowing that I was some sort of other--it was and is frustrating. Knowing that Hollywood has squandered another opportunity to break racial barriers really hurts me. That's why this is frustrating. This is not an isolated incident, and frankly, some of us have had enough of this bullshit.

Word. I'm going to assume that the people who don't find this whole situation outrageous are in a position of privelege, and thus would not understand what it's like not to see yourself reflected in the media as something other than a math geek or martial artist.

It makes me so fucking angry that people can just brush this off like it's nothing. It's not nothing. I want my little sister to be able to grow up seeing faces on the television that look like hers, and not have to feel out of place all the time like I did.

Doesn't mean we have to settle for it, I admit that I have biases, but I try to overcome them and make myself better for it, the problem is that no one wants to confront it. Racism, sexism, and all of those things are not permanent states of being, the only crime is letting it go unchecked and uncorrected. I am not going to settle on, oh we all are a bit racist and move on. I want to change that, in myself and in others.

It is trying, it is going beyond just LJ, but it can't be accomplished by just a small number of people there has to be more people will to get involved.

I think the secret just puts forth more cynicism that really is not helpful, the OP can just deal with the fact that people actually care and move on and let others be. I am sorry, but that whole "it doesn't matter" thing is really old and does nothing but discourage people who are working hard.

Re: 128

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
S/he's seeing the BAWWW HOLLYWOOD IS SO RACIST posts from people who are writing letters that s/he thinks will be ineffective - it's right there in the secret. And that letter writing campaign? Started with people discussing how racist Hollywood is in relation to the Avatar movie, complaining about it, and deciding they wanted to do something about it, so I don't really see why you think people talking to each other about things they find disgusting is so ineffective, when generally they come together to do productive things, not pat each other on the back for whining - which is what this secret, on the other hand, certainly seems to be gunning for.

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it all depends on the location. If people are talking to each other about things that they find disgusting their personal little blog in their personal of the internet and it never leaves that area, then yes, all they are doing is patting each other on the back for whining. Especially if they add in 'sticking it to the man' mentality. THAT, I believe, it was secret-maker was complaining about.

The effective stuff is what this letter-writing campaign has started. That actually gets something done.

Re: 128

[identity profile] tl--dr.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Reread the secret. S/he mentions people who talk about having written "10 letters to Mike and Bryan and M. Night" right there in the post, man. Avatar fandom is not complaining in isolation at all, it's been uniting and mobilizing to do something pretty much since the news first came out, and that's overtly what the secret is complaining about. If you want to complain about something different, something that's...not actually happening...then that's your prerogative, but it has nothing to do with the secret you want to agree with.

Avatar fandom is organizing and that's what the OP is complaining about.

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, OP is whining about people who won't shut up about it ON THEIR PERSONAL BLOGS, which have absoloutely NO influence on the movie industry and never will, but flood his/her F-list with constant whining. It's especially annoying if every other post is, "OMG I sent my letter three days ago, but nothing's changed yet, WTF?"

*That* is what he's complaining about. Whining without doing anything.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know that? I don't see that at all in the OP's secret.

No, the OP ís complaining about the entirety of Avatar fandom. They don't single out a particular kind of fan.

And posting on a blog won't influence the industry but it DOES help get the word out - something you acknowledge in another comment as being very important.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
... "I sent a letter" is not doing anything?

As long as people are complaining, it means they still have the right mindset to start doing something. Personal blogs are where people come together and realise that no, they're not alone feeling this, that if they try to do something about it they WON'T be alone and ineffective. A personal journal is where the Aang Ain't White letter writing campain originated. One does not exclude the other. Please stop pretending it does while the evidence is staring you right in the face.

Who ever said it was only personal blogs where people talk about this, anyway? Take a look at the Aang Ain't White community and you'll see that at least a dozen major anti-racism and ethnic awareness blogs, forums, communities and organisations have been contacted.

If the build-up, context and aftermath annoy you so much, just ignore it. Now your complaining will only either discourage people from doing ANYTHING, or wind them up even more, which means you'll have to put up with even MORE "whining" on you f-list.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you assume people are just whining and they're going to see the movie? They're saying this is a bad thing and why, writing letters to make it known they think it's a bad idea, and not seeing the movie. As opposed to just not seeing the movie but never suggesting that could be the reason why.

Also, this goes beyond preserving somebody's personal experience of the original work.

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Because a lot of people do that exact same thing. They whine on the internet, and then they don't do shit. Whining on the internet =/= complaining directly to the source; and sporadic letters =/= an organized petition to make their points clear.

And the "preserving personal experience" is the bonus you get in addition, so that at least *something* good has come out of it. It's an optimist's point of view.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
But what's going on in the Avatar fandom--that the OP seems to be complaining about--IS complaining to the source! A letter writing campaign is more effective than a petition. The whole point is making the issue clear to the source. That people are also discussing the problem in their journals, and maybe explaining the problem to people who didn't originally understand, is also a plus.

Re: 128

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing the secret-maker mentions about the letter-writing campagin is people who go, "I've written my letter, so I can complain all I want, 'cause I'm actually doing something!" Which, honestly, is no different than the original ranting on the internet, except that it's got an air of self-righteousness to it.

(sigh) You know, there are days when I feel really alone being the only person on F!S who doesn't assume the worst about secret-makers...

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
When people are agitated, they bitch. Deal with it. And there's nothing self-righteous about being proud to have done a good deed.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but you have strange priorities.

Re: 128

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2008-12-28 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, there are days when I feel really alone being the only person on F!S who doesn't assume the worst about secret-makers...

Here is the thing, even if the secret maker had the best intentions in submitting their secret they are still by the wording of their secret implying that people who complain or write letter that they are basically being useless and they should just shut up and reducing legitimate complaints and conversations about the topic to just "whining". People can say hurtful/racist without meaning to, but just because they don't mean to, doesn't mean that what they are saying isn't hurtful or demeaning or patronizing. It is one thing to say that people should not be insulting the OP, it is another to say that their intentions or whatever exonerates them of being criticized for what they said.

This doesn't even go into the fact that people can talk about whatever they want in their journals, and if they want to complain and bitch and moan and whatever they can, if someone doesn't like it they can avoid those entries or defriend the person entirely.

Re: 128

(Anonymous) 2008-12-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely not going to see the movie and I'm also going to let the studio know why. Things don't change if people don't make their voices heard.
