Non fandom secrets

Non fandoms secrets, dubiously fandom secrets, or fandom secrets you just don't want anyone turning into a post - drop 'em here!

[Note that I can't stop anyone from turning someone else's post into a secret, but just know it would be really rude]

I've spent a lot more time reading fan wikies (wikis? dunno) for fanfic research than I have actually re-reading or re-watching shows. I feel a bit bad about it, because I know fan wikis aren't necessarily objective and sometimes skip important details, but ehhhhhh, I just don't care enough.

That's exactly how I've been doing things for a number of fandoms. Sometimes the source material is too long and time consuming for me to re-tread. But it does feel like I'm losing a particular element when I do this -- how I felt about certain knowledge etc.

[I kind of want to make a secret of this, but I kind of don't because it feels pretentious] I think that Disney has been making blander and blander movies because they're putting more and more money into them, and the more money is involved the more scared they get of doing anything risky. The more IPs Disney buys, the worse it gets.
There's a part of me that wants it all to come down in a screaming pile.

100000%, I think this is very correct

Disney's Hercules would be just as good if each and every character in the film had their gender flipped. Fem!Herc would still be just as adorable, Masc!Megara would still be just as hot, Fem!Pain and Fem!Panic would still be just as funny, and Fem!Hades would still be just as cool. I just.. woke up this morning after having this dream and I'm now totally enamored with the idea. Every character has such a great design and iconic personality that it would translate really well, IMHO.

I've seen a lot of bloggers and creatives recently talking about parasocial relationships and boundaries and how they are not actually friends with all x-thousand of their followers and it's not cool to come into their inboxes and randomly tell them about your childhood trauma or your mean boss, and it's VERY not cool to send them hate mail because they didn't respond to your PM about your mean boss, and like... I totally get it! That's all fair and reasonable and cool! Assert those boundaries, folks! But at the same time... a lot of these bloggers, not all of them but a lot of them, deliberately build a parasocial relationship with their followers. They're 'casual' and 'honest' and 'real' and say 'how're you guys doing?' and invite people to send in photos of their pets, and I don't get how they're even a little surprised that anyone might mistake that for actual friendship. I wouldn't, but that's because I'm a bitter cynic.

...actually, I think the thing that annoys me about it is how many of the bloggers I'm seeing this from have also asked their followers for money in recent memory. My dude, you have deliberately built this relationship and now you are asking for money so you can make a deposit on a house but you say you don't owe your followers anything? Maybe not, but maybe you should delete your blog.

I mean, it's 2020, we live in hell and people need to make money. It's absolutely a narrow line between promoting things that encourage parasocial relationships because it's important and necessary for financial reasons on the one hand, and the legitimate problems created by doing so and by people who cross that line on the other hand. And TBH I think a lot of the smarter content-creator-y types are pretty aware that this dynamic exists but it's still hard to escape the trap, it's kind of a Scylla and Charybdis.

Thoughts on Netflix's Blood of Zeus:

1. Animation is awful
2. Writing is comparable (I have been rolling from the combo, honestly)
3. Thirst ranking:
-Zeus is eugh
-Hercules is cute/decent and could get it
-Apollo could pull up anytime, no questions asked
-Ares might need to put in a bit of work, but he could get it too as long as he kept talking and kept the helmet on (depending on the mood).
-Shame the possibly sexiest character became a nasty demon (now ineligible).
- Undecided on Poseidon

Oh, hello fellow BoZ watcher~

* I found myself really confused over the animation too; certain scenes had a really low frame rate and then others were beautifully done. The quality was all over the place and I wonder if it was due to budget restraints or if two different animation houses worked on it.

* For its genre, the writing was okay IMHO but nothing spectacular. The voice acting was the same way - decent but forgettable with nobody standing out.

* Blood of Zeus is indeed a thirst production and with some delightfully horny designs.

* I genuinely liked Zeus/Hera in this which is rare because most takes on Greek mythos make both characters super unlikable but they were pretty cool in this. They were also hot together and had a lot of chemistry.

* Best part of the show was the last two minutes when Hades shows up and delivers his fantastic line.

* Worst part is Seraphim's name. I just... why. Why name him Seraphim when he is a -Greek- deity? I understand the symbolism behind the name but that is two different world mythologies being used unnecessarily.

* Oh, and Heron was surprisingly boring and I found myself rooting for his brother because of it. :-/

i feel bad about this but i have this friend? who wants to start ivf so she can have a baby? and i think it is a terrible fucking idea on nearly every level. im honestly hoping she gets turned down by the clinic.
i love my friend, but shes not in a good physical condition to have a baby, shes single, she has a part time min wage job, and she has horrible spending habits. the only thing on her side is that she has lots of experience with kids.
but seriously this is a bad idea.

Re: Non fandom secrets

(Anonymous) 2020-11-02 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, the part time job might at least mean she has more time for the baby than a lot of parents. On the other hand, even with a robust government safety net (which countries even have those anymore?) the minimum wage part is gonna make affording a kid a struggle. Does she have a big extended family or other friends with small children she could switch off watching kids with, so she can keep the job?

Also if she's got a part time minimum wage job, how's she gonna afford ivf?

Why IVF and not artificial insemination? (Not that it makes a difference with the other stuff.)

where i live, ivf is only done to married couples or long term partnerships. it's near impossible for a single person to get it done.
also doesnt get a dime from insurance.
that probably differs from country to country.

I don't want to do Cristmas this year.

Re: Non fandom secrets

(Anonymous) 2020-11-02 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Christmas is a drag in a normal year, I don't even want to think about Christmas after a year like this. I just want to sleep until, like, mid-January.

I have a coworker who's really nice to everyone she works with. We ended up work friends before I learned she's an evangelical Christian who "hates politics," gives her ballot to her (also evangelical) dad to fill out, and seems to get what news she does follow from Fox (or her congregation or parents who get their news from Fox and Facebook.)

She has never tried to proselytize at me, and in turn I try to avoid talking politics around her. She's well liked by most everybody and I don't want to get (more) of a reputation as someone who can't keep my mouth shut about inappropriate political/social stuff at work.

I don't know how I'm gonna keep my cool around her this month.

All the rest of my regular coworkers, and my boss, range from "voting for Biden but doesn't discuss politics much" to "shares anti-Trump memes and attends protests" to "fuck capitalism, Biden isn't progressive enough."

If things get bad maybe I'll just take a couple weeks off, since I have lots of saved leave thanks to my union job. My boss already joked(?) that we might all call in on the 4th if Biden loses, and some of my other coworkers were smart and took most of this week off ages ago. I wonder what our lone Fox-watcher would do if she showed up to an empty workplace?

I'm the only one of my friends who doesn't think Biden sucks, and I have yet to hear any true reason why he does other than "He's not going to transform the country into a socialist utopia."

Most days I can't decide whether I just fucking hate everybody and everything, or if I'm just tired of all the ugliness and wish everyone would get a goddamn grip (including myself) and return to some form of civility.

There are only two things keeping me alive right now.

1. My cat and being responsible for her.

2. The hope that Biden might win the election and things might change even just a little.

And honestly I've had thoughts that if Trump wins again, I might just give up, because what's the point? It has been a long time since I've been this close to suicidal and it is scaring me.

I had an erotic dream recently about nachos? Like, a hot guy eating really cheesy, messy nachos. His mouth was so detailed as if it was in high definition. :-\ My brain is sexualizing everything lately and I don’t know if I should be worried or impressed with myself. Pfffft.

I'm tired oh being an adult with responsabilities.

I left my home country searching for job security in order to have spare money to send back home to my parents, but Covid killed my dream of pursuing a career in tourism.
I've been in laid off since March. I have enough spare money to survive another year here, but I can't go back to Europe because of lack of jobs and all the lockdowns.
I constantly fake being fine and being a strong willed woman but inside I just want to say fuck all this shit, this world doesn't deserve my efforts and tears.
I'm lucky I've made some good friends here and that I have a roommate preventing me from stepping in front of a train.

I just want to go home to my mom and hug her and sleep for an entire year... I miss home.
