An old fandom you like going back to?

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you're not 100% into the general fandom or just like revisiting old works.

For years I use to go back to Harry Potter fics (mostly on ffnet since everytime I visit the HP part of AO3 it's mostly a pornhole - nothing against it, but most of the time I'm trying to look for a plot or an AU story).
However, more recently I've been going through my old favorites on deviantart at all the Naruto fan art and comics. It's been tempting me to go revisit ffnet to find some old fics I remember being into back in the day.

I'm not at all into the Harry Potter books anymore, but occasionally I'll get feelings for the world and go back and reread old favorite fics. It was just such a big part of my life for so long.

I meander in and out of YYH now and then. It's very nostalgic. I'm still in the HP and Naruto fandoms (as in, I still write fic for them) but I do this for The Hobbit too.

I hadn't been able to write anything at all in any fandom for the last several years, then a couple months ago I decided to revisit my old "one true fandom" and suddenly I can't stop writing for it, because I still am absolutely madly in love with it despite the years apart and there's still no one else writing lengthy plotty stuff with my favorite OTP ever. (Which is why I am not naming fandom or pairing, it would be blatantly obvious who I was, hahah.)

But omg I am still so absolutely crazy about it it's kind of disturbing. Even though if I want my preferred pairing I have to write it for myself and there's very little fic in general, it's not like I hate other pairings, and I am having so much fun letting mine loose in my brain again.

I got into the HP fandom late in the game (and I say this as a kid who grew up while the series was still being written -- I read the first book about three or four years after it came out), and I found myself trawling through all the niche sites, which I will agree had some very plotty good (not just snutty, nothing wrong with that if course!). The ship specific sites were AH-MAZING. There was Malfoy Manor, Granger Enchanted, Diagon Alley, man. Not to mention the LJ comms (the one I was signed up for sadly closed its doors not long after).

And then of course, Inuyasha (another show I watched as a kid/adolescent) but I didn't get into the fandom (I wrote my own corny doujinshi lmao, this was before I knew of fandom as a thing) until late as well. And even then, I really stayed on ship specific sites. They are truly treasure troves!

Sometimes I'm afraid of looking back to only find these places have disappeared...

1970s BSG. All of my old faves are saved on my computer and I reread them fairly regularly. The fandom is dead (understandably) and most fic is no longer available online though which makes me sad.

JPop. I just faded out of that one. Every now and then I check if my boys are doing okay and visit an old fandom haunt. Then I'm reminded how all my friends are gone, too, and how mean-spirited and humorless that crowd can be, and leave again.

I started reading/writing Star Trek AOS in oct 2018 after being away since 2010. Funnily enough, I had spent most of those years in the SPN fandom!

I'm not sure if it's YA or "children's" lit, but Zilpha Keatley Snyder's "The Changeling". (Also really enjoyed "The Egypt Game", which was how I found this one.) I read it when I was very small, then found my copy again when I was in my late teens and it blew me away in entirely different ways than when I was a kid. Wish I could figure out where that copy went off to, I suspect I loaned it out to someone because it's like "if you want to understand me, read this book". And I'm not sure which person I might have last loaned it to.

Cornelia Funke! <3 Dragon Rider was my favorite book for years when I was a young teen.

Now my favorite is Johnathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy.
