Some people have nothing better to do than believe they're internet warriors on a fucking crusade. I just sit back and laugh when it all crashes and burns or blows up in their face.

And it never ceases to amaze me how many people just don't understand the purpose of AO3. You don't like what you see? Ignore it or go somewhere else.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This, 100%.

Yep.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine they purposefully went looking for a fic they could complain about and that was the first one they found. Probably has a fav of theirs in it and decided to try and ruin everyone's day instead of just ignoring it.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Antis 100% go purposefully looking for and expose themselves to content they know will upset them. It's their entire schtik. Oftentimes they'll link it to all their friends in a Discord server to expose them all to it, too, and then circlejerk over how terrible it is.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-20 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just have nothing better to do.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
OK, not a comment on fic in general, or about the intentions of the person making the callout post, but isn't RPF about a real minor fair to have a problem with? I don't think that's in the same category as fic about "characters" at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Of course! I don't like it myself. I certainly won't write it or read it, and probably not want to be friends with someone who's super into it.

That's a very different thing than demanding AO3 remove it, though. I don't support that either. It's fortunately very easy to filter tags so you don't have to look at it.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

While normally "don't like, don't read" works for me, I don't know if that covers this situation, simply because there is a real person involved. IDK, without getting into detail, it's too close to certain aspects of situations where I was harmed as a child and teenager for me to be able to dismiss it with that reasoning, personally. That's just my perspective on the matter.

I'm not sure what the "right" approach to communicating with ao3 here is, as I am not super involved in fanfiction myself, but I don't think that this is an arbitrary place to draw a line at all.

I think it's abhorrent, disgusting, and immoral to write sexually explicit material about a real-life minor. I think the writer ought to feel shame for creating and posting such a thing.

But people aren't staying focused on the author. They're turning their anger on AO3 for allowing this kind of content at all. And as gross as the story in question seems to be (I haven't looked it up myself), it's just fiction. It's legal, and AO3's policy has always been to allow all legal content.

I agree with the policy even though I think some of the content it protects is reprehensible, and I monetarily support AO3 even knowing shit like this is posted there.

Anyone who disagrees with AO3's TOS is free to make their own archive with whatever rules they consider suitable.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much exactly my stance on it too.

+2. The problem os not AO3.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Going to be a contrarian and say that I would like it if ao3 didn't carry the rpf porn fic of a minor. I can understand being horny, but for an irl minor, and not a character? I think even ykinmk doesn't cover that.

Sometimes I just wish for an ability to block certain authors on ao3. Blocking a certain tag isn't always the solution when I just have problems with the authors themselves. I think blocking certain authors would make my time a lot better in many ways, and not just in terms of blocking someone who is horny for an irl minor. Would also allow me to block people who use an entire page's worth of tags in their fics.

You can block them by...not clicking on their fic? I mean - seriously, if you know you don't like their stuff, then...don't click.

Also, pretty sure you *can* block a particular author.
Two solutions right here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FanFiction/comments/fdgxxk/how_do_i_block_an_author_on_ao3/

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the info, but this isn't as easy for the person wanting to do the blocking as other websites have it. Ideally a good block feature on ao3 would just be a button that people could click, and not something that people would have to type in manually each time. Especially if I'm entering the main fandom page, and not doing a search, then I would still be seeing fics by authors I don't want to see. A proper block system doesn't exist yet, but it would be as simple as how the "subscribe" function already works.

I agree and I find it weird that a lot of people here are responding to criticism of this as if it’s just disliking the themes of a fanfic about purely fictional characters. WTF?!

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone forgot that there's someone horny for porn of an irl minor, and how that's not acceptable offline.

Eh, I can see AO3's stance on this though, even if I find the existence of that kind of fic repugnant. Say they decide okay, explicit RPF of real minors is banned. But what about explicit fic about the characters they play? Arguably it's the same 'person' in the explicit scene, it's just one fic is asking you to imagine the context of a show and the other isn't. There's a decent argument to be made that if you ban one you have to ban the other. Then what else should they ban? And where do you draw the line of 'minor'? What if the author is a fifteen year old writing explicit fic about their sixteen year old famous crush, does that change things? AO3 was created because so many archives started as open and then began drawing lines of what to ban and we ended up with ff.net's NC-17 purge, lj Strikethrough and various other issues. Once you start drawing lines it's hard to stop, and even if I personally find that kind of fic gross and inappropriate I can see why AO3 doesn't want to make that judgement. From all accounts the fic was properly tagged and warned for. Don't like, don't read.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-21 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
My take is that there isn't a good solution yet, but just let me block the author already. I think being asked to put up with the intolerable makes people pissed at point their fingers at ao3. If ao3 wants us to curate our own viewing experiences, then go full force on that decision and let us be able to actually moderate what we see by blocking certain authors. Being able to block certain tags is a move in the right direction, and being able to block certain authors is what I think will resolve the remaining issues.

I'm not here to answer a slippery slope question. I just think blocking the author in addition to blocking certain tags should've been implemented at the same time.

It's almost like they'd rather control what you write than what they read. Or something.
