Re: Storylines that have always bugged you

I hated SPN's shift from monster of the week to arcs based on angels and demons (though I appreciate demons were already part of it). I even liked Castiel, but bringing religion into it ruined the show for me.

+1

I liked Castiel and the initial angel stuff but the show didn't have the framework for an expanded lore and it only ended up dragging the show down into something I just didn't like and ended up dropping. The MoTW style episodes worked a lot better imo and were more fun.

Me too. It was alright, I guess, but it just didn't feel like my favorite show anymore and it was better when the whole existence of heaven/angels was left more of a mystery.

I'm fine thinking that the show ended after the third season, even if it's bit of a bad end for Dean.

Castiel the angel was ok. The god, heaveb, prophecies and a lost little brother... not so much.

YES YES YES, me too!! I loved the spooky monster of the week stuff but it just veered into overpowered nonsense. It's a reason I hate Castiel. It just always seemed like keeping him around was pandering to this base but only halfheartedly and at the expense of what I originally liked about the show: handsome dudes crying, family drama, spooky monsters and an X-Files vibe.

"pandering to this base"

I initially read that as HIS base, and that's a phrase I've only ever seen (at least that I can remember) in the context of Donald Trump, so it gave me some kind of weird feelings. :P

But yeah, the case of the week/X-Files vibe was way more interesting to me than what the show became later, and I hated Castiel too. (Well, maybe hate is too strong a word, but I seriously disliked him.)

Same. I watched that show out of habit long after I quit actually liking it. I thought the earlier seasons were way better and all the angel/demon crap (including Castiel) was just dumb.

I understand why that feels frustrating, but I honestly don't understand why people didn't feel it was a possibility regardless. like bringing religion as a complaint doesn't make sense to me when of all the demon types they chose to use as a conspiracy, the main mystery, they chose the christian versions. that...was the overarching plot from the beginning?

to me it never made sense why they believed angels weren't real, if they had proof of demons. the ~lore~ is pretty clear and very christian on the origin of demons.

Demons and an underworld exist in many religions though.

Oh totally, and if they had used the lore from any of those, I would understood finding angel characters left-field. But they didn't, they used catholic exorcisms in latin, which are very much about God in Christianity (not even a judeo-christian amalgamation), and never once implied that christians were extrapolating from pagans or something.

I always took it as religion was a cultural interface with these beings which were homogeneous but perceived differently by each religion. And that an exorcisms power came from the spiritual power and intent of the exorcist.

That's just how I took it, not saying that's what they were going for.

I don't think that tracks with how specifically the show described them. Like if a being was the object of several different mythologies, that would be mentioned and either the defeating strategy was synthesized from each or the various methods were used until one worked. but that they were the subject of many mythologies was mentioned if it was relevant. and I think the show explicitly rejects the cultural interface theory, in that beings which were only the subject of one mythology could only be defeated by understanding that mythology, even if extrapolated into modern terms, tho maybe that was later on.

that was never true for demons. the texts were always catholic or christian, holy water was always blessed over a rosary, consecrated ground was always church ground, exorcisms were always church latin, naming god to find a demon? the christian version, not the jewish or muslim names of god ever. there was simply no ambiguity. honestly now that you mention it, this was kinda offensive.

I liked the inclusion of the angels (and Cas ended up becoming one of my favorite characters), but it was pretty clear that they had no idea what to do with them once the main story arc wrapped up. They just kept coming with more convoluted idiot plots to make them weaker so they were no stronger than the average demon.

I didn't like the inclusion of religion because of the offensive way other gods were portrayed. Like Ganesha having a taste for human flesh and being so easily beaten by Lucifer. What the fuck?

Argh, seconding SPN's Ganesha. I know they play fast and loose with a lot of religions and a lot of it ends up with anything mythical/supernatural largely being jerks, but with him, it really felt like they just wanted to have the comic impact of the elephant appearing and ignored everything else beyond that.
