I mean, I would appreciate it personally, I love food in fiction

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is some gross-looking spaghetti. Plus the tall glass of milk for the kids. 🤢

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Worm spaghetti :)

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's... a tall glass?

Right?! I like a lot of sauce on my pasta, but that is some Alphaghetti-level sludge.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
As smeone who loves talking about food, YES

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny how there's so much detail on some characters, but I have no idea what they like to eat, so I guess I agree.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love food descriptions in fiction, especially when it gives me a more detailed look into the universe or culture.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
really small details like that can give a lot of life to a character. That being said... I still have to learn to give these small details to my characters.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
But what does their food preference say about their character? If somebody likes sweet or salty, I don't think it correlates to anything about their personality traits, it's just interesting to know.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
If it's that basic, then maybe not. But what foods people like and the reason why they like them can say a lot about the character. What foods did they grow up eating? What's their go to comfort/sick food? Are they the type of person who eats a lot when stressed or do they lose their appetite? Do they love food and trying new things, or are they very conservative in what they eat? Or are they the kind of person who doesn't care what they eat as long as it's filling?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
As a POC writer who's finally diving into fiction writing with the intent of writing POC characters, it can help me connect the character to their heritage. It also has helped me understand my personal voice as a writer.

A LOT.

Do they spend a lot of time considering their food, or do they just not think about it much and eat whatever's in front of them? Are they picky eaters or not, and why? Do they cook or do they eat out only? Do they like haute cuisine or comfort food? Are they adventurous and eager to try new things, or do they stick with the familiar only? Do they have any allergies or aversions? How does the food they like relate to the culture they come from - do they rebel against what they grew up eating or do they embrace it? Do they have any disordered eating patterns? Do they grow and/or hunt their own food? Have they traveled, and if so, what new favorite foods did they pick up? Do they have any traumatic food-related experiences? Are there dishes they used to love and can't get anymore that they miss?

These are only a few examples of what food can say about a character.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you are not a writer? I apologize in advance if you are, but maybe this can be food for thought... no pun intended. Little details can always say something about the character, in the hands of a competent and creative writer. If they're truly irrelevant... that's not good writing. But what people choose to eat, what foods are available/unavailable, how they eat, etc. all say something about their personality. How could it be otherwise?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, what I love is that in fiction, you can make a character's eating habits and food preferences "suit them" and be demonstrative of their character in a way that is only vaguely possible IRL.

There's something so satisfying about that, to me.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
The opposite side of this though is when a show or movie shows a character eating, say, ice cream one single time and fandom makes their entire personality that they just fucking love ice cream and would die for ice cream and only want to have ice cream forever.

Yes! I love having food details in stories. It's not only fun, but it gives everyone something to do, sometimes, and it actually makes sense in a lot of stories. I don't get stories (or movies, etc), where people never eat or drink or rest or shower. It doesn't have to be a major 'thing', but c'mon!

it depends on the type of book to me. i liked redwall and other books with feasts' depiction of food, because I really want the associated cookbook. but if it's a romance, there's really no reason to care because everyone eats the same thing (or rather the only reason to care is because you've made it a part of the characters' oeuvre, which is nice for distinction but not necessary). but yeah, i like character studies wherein food plays a nice part

Funnily enough, I recently got back into fanfic writing and for one of the first fanfics I wrote I began writing about a character cooking and I really enjoyed it. It's kind of become a fun detail I like adding into my fics where we might learn a bit about a character from what they're cooking or what they're eating. Guess it was bound to happen since I have a love for food IRL?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-08 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
I…disagree a lot with this secret. Food in fic is actually a bit of a squick for me due to my own issues with food, and reading about characters eating is not a very fun experience.

To clarify, a character mentioning they're having lunch is one thing, but it's another squicky thing entirely if the author goes into detail about the food, taste, texture, etc.

I can't think of a single story or character that would be improved if I knew they preferred tuna sandwiches to ham. I'm all for including small details to flesh out characterization, but it also has to make sense to the plot and story you're trying to tell, not just a detail thrown in there for no purpose.
