Interesting. If we take OP at their word, then everything they told the friend was helpful, and now the friend either has a big head, or they can't handle true concrit.

On the other hand, it's entirely possible that OP who nitpicked to the point of unbearable, or only believed the writing was good when the friend followed the beta advice. No one else can say if the writing actually suffered at all.

Without specific examples, it's hard to tell.

Yes, I'm aware I omitted an it's. Or maybe I added an extra who. Whatever, I'm not the author.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Maybe every single secret is an elaborate lie by the OP. That's a perfectly reasonable assumption.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's hardly an elaborate lie. Come on. The idea that people who are involved in a situation don't necessarily give a reliable and objective account of it is hardly some conspiracy theory. It's a pretty basic and familiar and well-attested reality. It doesn't involve malice, just normal human fallibility.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm saying either is possible. It could be some mix of the two as well.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
No chill was had by you today. Nor reading comprehension, it would seem.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
HAH. Exactly what I was thinking.

Oh, now we're asking secret makers to, what? Cite their sources? OP wasn't asking for us to play judge. They don't need evidence. This isn't a court.

Sooounds like we just have a bunch of salty fanfic authors in the comments, if you ask me.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't need evidence and this isn't a court.

But equally, aren't people in the comments allowed to react how they want? Well, my reaction when I hear a story like that is, I think there might be two sides here.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a combination of writers who are rather sensitive to the topic of concrit, plus the few people who had a bad experience with their beta so now they think there's no such thing as a good beta.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But there's so much more salt in your comment though... and honestly, by the flavor of the snark, I kind of think you're the same person. Are you replying to your own comments? Are you OP?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I just feel very strongly about the whole thing. I AM a fan of your tinfoil hat, though.

And there may be salt (like I said, this is one of those things that bugs me a lot) buuuuut it's couched in a weird form of glee. I love how asinine this whole community is. It's absolutely fascinating and I get a huge kick out of it.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
man it's such a harmless secret and still you lot want really hard to be the clever ones who ~see things for what they are~ or some shit. undermining people's perception is such a worthwhile endeavour and taking people's words for anything is for gullible idiots

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
But if we just take OP's words and start maligning their friend (whom we don't know), that's not harmless?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
What are y'all thinking people are gonna do?

Storm the author's castle?

Fight them in the streets?

Tape their cat to the floor, then point and laugh?

Please explain to me the consequences. I'm so curious.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people on the internet might think OP's writer friend is silly, and we can't have that! That's tantamount to harassment!!!! /s

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
look, I don't know what's crawled your butt here but I think "there might be two sides" is a fair reaction. Your comments seem to imply that we have an obligation to take OP's side for some reason but if the secret doesn't ring true to the reader, that's just the way it is.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, see, you're perpetuating the problem.

You aren't being required to take anyone's side. Sides don't matter because you don't know either of these people and couldn't spot them in a crowd if you tried. Even if they gave you the other side's viewpoint, you STILL could not accurately choose a side. Because you don't know these people. And you don't know their relationship.

But FURTHERMORE.

Even if you DID take a side. What, on this green earth, does it even fucking matter.

No one would be harmed if you thought a random stranger who you can't even *name* is a big ol' butthole. There are zero consequences. You could agree with OP or not agree with OP. Literally zero things will come of it. The secret maker isn't going to somehow get money or fame or, I dunno, made-up internet points for being "right." They win nothing. And the person they're talking about won't be hurt, or limited, or attacked for this secret having been made.

There are literally zero stakes to just reading this secret. If your first instinct is "I should take sides," all it tells me is you're projecting on the author and taking it personally.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I agree that it's broadly harmless whichever way you do react

But that goes both ways. If peoples' reaction is not to take OP at face value, that's also harmless. So then how do you justify the comments that are like "UGH I guess some people just think they're so smart and clever!! What do you want, hard documentary evidence?? Sounds like a bunch of salty fanfic writers to me!!"?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not "wanting really hard to be the clever one." I'm just looking for examples. Because with the way the secret is written, I'm NOT able to take OP's words at face value.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not trying to be clever, it's my reaction to the secret

Sorry that my reaction is different than yours I guess

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I wonder if people feel better about themselves if they are convinced that they haven't fallen for OP's dastardly tales or whatever, but it's a weird dynamic.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-13 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason, this was my take, too. I'm not saying that OP sounds like a liar but how are they so sure they're that good? I think I'm good, and even I would not confidently ascribe a perceived decline in quality to be a direct result of not using my service.
