I agree with the general idea (cosplay = dumb). And I guess I'm the only other one here who does, seeing as everyone else pretty much copy/pasted each other's defensive responses. However, I don't think it's stupid because cosplayers think they look like the characters, I thin it's stupid because cosplayers looks retarded doing it. I hate that you can't express this opinion or people just think you're being an asshole. Isn't the point of fandomsecrets to get these kinds of feelings out without being ostracized?

Anyway. If you cosplay, I think you're a loser. Especially when I see a particularly shitty cosplayer. If you're going to do something, at least put some effort into it.

If you don't like it just keep your opinion to yourself. There's nothing constructive in anything you just said. (Also, do you think Halloween and costumes in general are stupid as well? How do people "look retarded" dressing up in costumes?)

Yes, I do think Halloween costumes are stupid, but not to the same degree as when people cosplay. It's partly the attitude that goes into wearing the costume that I find retarded. In general, I think it's incredibly juvenile and tasteless. I don't care if that's how people choose to have fun... Honestly, I couldn't care less about the reason, I think it's stupid regardless. (Unless, maybe, it was a dying child's wish to speak to Pikachu or something. But that's an extreme case.) In any case, I'm not saying people should stop, I'm saying I would never do it because I think it's dumb.

That is a very logical assumption to make in this case, but no, there is no trauma in my life that makes me think dressing up as someone else is dumb.

Further in the thread, you boiled your opinion down to "dressing up as someone else is dumb". Do you hold the same derision toward historical reenactors who dress in period clothing? How about people who act in community theater productions? If not, what's so different about anime and game costuming that qualifies it as "incredibly juvenile and tasteless"?

Telling the nerds who inhabit fandomsecrets that you hate their particular type of nerdom seems rather counterproductive to me, secret or not. That'd be like walking into a racetrack and telling all the NASCAR fans that they're all inbred hicks with no taste in entertainment.

What is the purpose of this community? Maybe if I understand what you think that is, I'd understand how my opinion is "counterproductive." There is no agenda behind what I said, neither is there really an agenda behind this community except to share things you can't share elsewhere. As for the NASCAR example, telling them wouldn't be counterproductive. It would be stupid, but not counterproductive.

And if you think people are losers because they have fun doing something unimportant and silly that they enjoy, then I think you're a loser and a bit of a dick. Sorry, but if you're being an asshole, you don't get to say "BUT IT'S JUST MY OPINION THAT YOU'RE ALL STUPID, WAH."

It's fine you get all defensive over a hobby - that's understandable. I just don't think you're less of a loser for defining yourself so strongly by something you do for fun. And if you think I'm an asshole for not enjoying everything completely frivolous and disengaging in my eyes, that's totally fine too. No harm done to me OR you.

Cos I sure as hell only decide to play dress-up because it's fun to do in a group of friends, and I think the costumes are neat.

I don't care if you don't find it engaging or think it's "frivolous," though lol at that being your own judgement call here -- I think keeping track of celebrities' lives, watching reality TV shows or sitcoms, or most collecting hobbies are "frivolous," but it doesn't make them bad nor the people who do it "stupid."
