The coolest thing about the Internet is that people keep getting into old fandoms, and it just makes me so happy every time I see a Gen Z person getting into TOS, or X-Files, or whatever

I hold my breath when a Gen Z person gets into an old fandom, and especially if they bring their friends, because this generation is very entitled, ageist, and violent towards older fans who were there before them. There's at least a 50/50 chance that they'll throw a temper tantrum and threats when they find out adults in the fandom are writing explicit fanfic. They don't believe in not clicking on 18+ warnings; they think it's their right stop the very existence of fanfiction that makes them uncomfy.

Also a lot of older fandoms have maturer and more nuanced characters, and they just can't write that.

All I can say is that my own experience has been dramatically different, and that there are good and bad people in every community on every corner of the Internet.

When Hannibal of all things went on Netflix, there was a nasty infestation of teen antis going postal over the very existence of any kind of NSFW art or fic at all. (Fucking HANNNIBAL.) It came to a horrific head when showrunner Bryan Fuller hit 'like' on some NSFW Hannigram art - consenting adult blowjob, thoroughly tame by the fandom standards - and teens lost their minds, that he was "exposing minors to porn." By clicking 'like.' It was such a shit show The Mary Sue wrote an article about it.

That is just so insane. I never watched Hannibal, but I know that while it's not puppies and sunshine (because cannibalism, duh), the two dudes are full on adults and not related, so the whole "'pro-ship' which translates to 'I ship minors with adults and also incest'" thing is just such a crazy leap.

A lot of antis will claim that they're only against "nasty stuff" like "rape, incest, pedophilia" (their usual unholy trinity), but this incident flat out proved that they're lying about that and it's nothing more than a thin veneer over sheer anti-sex prudery.

Because the art in question was a consensual sex act between full-grown, non-related adults. The kind of thing billions of adults in the real world enjoy on a regular basis. Nothing illegal or immoral about it. And they still had a screaming poo-flinging meltdown over it.

It always makes me nervous when Gen Z walks into a fandom. In a general sense from what I've personally seen, they've been consistently the meanest and quickest to anger of fans.

They're not all like this of course, but way too many of them will waltz into a 30-year-old fandom (seriously, I saw this happening in fucking X-FILES on Tumblr) and then act horrified that there are adults in there making adult stuff and start screaming about "nasty old hags" and whatnot.

If the fandom itself would be old enough to have a mortgage and aching knees if it were a person, you can be damn well sure there are going to be adults in it. Some ranging from 30 up to death. No, they will not leave or stop making smut because you're uncomfy.

Especially if the source material itself is something that's, you know, aimed at adults. Like, wow, there are adults in the fandom for a show that's meant for adults, how shocking!

Love that too. Of course, only when it's a select few interested kids, not a whole influx because we don't need any of that young kids' "ew hagss" hive mentality in here. In those cases, love it.

This is observed behavior that has happened in multiple fandoms. This really happens. People are right to be pissed off about it and to not want to see it happen in their fandom. This isn't about all young fans, this is only about young fans who act like that. If they don't act like that, there's no problem.

The problem is that people in this thread are literally acting like all young fans act like that. Or at least, that it's reasonable to assume that all young fans act like that until proven otherwise. I think that's ridiculous and poisonous.

You've figured out that not liking someone because of their age is wrong, while not liking someone because of their shitty behavior in your house is totally justified? Good job, you! The white supremacists whining about the intolerant left should learn from your good example.
