Same! There are a lot of older fandoms I want to write for, but I tend to stick with modern-set media so I don't nitpick myself to death over the setting/costumes/slang/etc.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
My attitude is always just "grip it and rip it" but I guess it is frustrating if the most satisfying part of writing that kind of fic is also the most difficult part.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I find this so relatable because I spent like an entire afternoon the other day looking up info on how bathing and shaving worked in medieval times, then a couple days looking over what edible plants could be foraged in southwestern Europe in late September/early October. -_-

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Get a beta to history pick for you?

Also, you could write your story, and then just do research on the things you have written down. Let's say the fic takes place during a ball and a riding trip- then you can just do research for those bits, and not on, say, churchgoing or mourning.

I almost only write in historical fandoms, and love the research- it's half the fun. :)

oof I don't blame you. It hasn't stopped me but I also fully admit to being distracted by wiki rabbit holes when I should be writing. I'm working on something set in a fictional canon based on sengoku-era Japan so even if I can gloss things over by just writing straight up fictional fantasy who the fuck cares, I don't want to. I want to use the correct terms for parts of the castle and types of clothing! I want to write about what the daimyo were really eating in their feasts! It's FUN!

...two hours later I realize I've been on wikipedia all day and haven't written a thing oops.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It is definitely a chore, and even when you do all the research, there'll still be a detail or two you'll have missed. But you know... I think that's okay. You're still putting in the effort, and that's great.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I get it. I love The Old Guard and there is just SO MUCH history most of the characters have to play around with and be the settings of fanfic. But, ugh. The amount of time and effort it would take to do it right makes me tired of writing most stories before I even start.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)

It's really important to balance the worldbuilding with trying just as hard at everything else, though. Personally, I can forgive an occasional slipup in accuracy if the characters are well done and the plot makes sense. I've seen too much historical fiction that concentrates so hard on making sure they get the food and clothing and forms of address right, then they give us boring/unlikable characters (or OOC ones if fanfic) and absolutely terrible dialogue. Like, I don't care if the author has a PhD and is a reknowned expert on the Tudors if their dialogue is wooden and I want to slap the heroine.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Start small! Write a short fic in a single scene rather than a decades-spanning world travel epic! I think if you love the canon and understand the characters and their values, that's more important than getting the exact right tweed - I've seen fic where the clothes and technology and scenery is 100% right but the characters seem like they're straight from tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Generally speaking, with historical fandoms, I've found it's mostly a matter of matching the tone and feel of the canon (having the characters sound like themselves, doing the types of things they do in canon), avoiding anything obviously jarring (incongruous technology, modern slang, etc), and then adding just a couple of interesting extra details from history. Just one or two, if they fit the story, to add a bit of feel and interest. You don't have to write a full historical essay here, just throw in some of the things that you found interesting or exciting about the period. Things like a character suffering blast lung in a WWII fic, or a cowboy getting casually offered some cocaine cough drops for his cold by a schoolmarm with kids because that's a thing in the 1870s, or a Renaissance noble being able to offer his guests orange juice or debating the cost of spices, or an English Regency traveller being glad that they're a bit past the golden hey-day of highwaymen so the trip to York shouldn't be that dangerous. You know, just the cool little details that flesh out the setting, without requiring your audience to read an essay if they don't want to just now.

I think often, in fandom and in general, people read stories for the story first and foremost, or for the characters. The worldbuilding, to many readers, is going to be a cool backdrop, not the whole point of the story. If you've got a canon to work off of, something the fandom already loves, most of what you need to do is match the feel of the canon/characters, avoid throwing anything ridiculously and obviously anachronistic in, and then add some of your own details to spice it up.

If all else fails, you can just put a note at the top that you had fun researching for this, but there's probably a few things in there that are still less than historically accurate, but you hope people enjoy the story anyway. Works for me!

(Anonymous) 2021-01-24 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't that difficult, OP. You do the research to get some details for set dressing and whenever people use particular objects, but a story should be a great deal of dialog and plot, and those tend to flow quite easily if you've done any reading in the period.

Anyway, don't give yourself reasons not to try. Just do it!

Handsomeness is so damn subjective though! I find him incredibly handsome and sexy. Others don't, and that's fine. Like I particaruily love his Roman nose, which you don't often see on actors.

But...if you're a cis man, you don't have to be 'attractive' by conventional standards to make it in Hollywood. I guess the unique thing about him is that he's Latinx.

Me too! Sometimes it feels like you lack the energy. The only way I have been watching stuff is if I force myself to not think too much.

I also have the problem that if I'm watching something that I really enjoy but that has already ended a while ago I avoid the end.

Lmao that's a great metaphor

Anyway, I sort of agree. I don't actively hate him as a character. But it really, really bugs me how much everyone loves him. And John Krasinski really annoys me as an actor, with his stupid long face trying to be a fucking action star and being married to Emily Blunt and his stupid Internet show and stupid horror movies he makes. So that bleeds through somewhat.

Secret maker here...

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know that my computer is fried and while I had backups of documents, I didn't have backups of the secrets I made. There are probably a dozen or so secrets from the last secret thread that were lost and I'll be trying to reconstruct them when I get a new laptop. In the meantime, I'm afraid next week's secrets might be a little sparse, so submit 'em if you've got' em and I'll try to get back to business as soon as I can.

I'll still be around, but with slightly limited access. Stay healthy, everyone! I'll be back. Apologies for the inconvenience!
