That attitude is what tanked the ghostbusters reboot and honestly? Ghostbusters remake was >>>>>>>>>>>>>> the original. But no, we're not allowed nice things because of shitty bitter people.

Based purely on that, i'm going to give it a chance. My hopes aren't high though, because the attitude you have in your secret is endemic and tends to poison this stuff from within.

Although FY had possibly one of the most memorable scenes to me -- i feel like it was a cheeky self aware poking fun at the genre/tropes-- when they're in the woods and there's just these cuts and zoom ins on everybody's water eyes, back and forth and back and forth --it was fucking hilarious

It offers new kinds of plotlines to give characters

I tend to at least imagine everyone I'm reading about in PWPs as having no body hair since body hair is a turn off for me. Helps that I'm very often reading elves or other species that are likely to not actually have body hair.

Sailor Moon isn't very good though. It's cute but the writing is extremely cookie cutter.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

And Sailor Moon is 90s, not 80s.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I agree. First, sorry OP, but not everything made is going to be to your liking, and the creators don't have to cater to your personal whim. Second, yes, it isn't going to be perfect. But it will be a start and a step in the right direction. It has to start somewhere. Otherwise, we'll stay in the same place forever and never have all-female action movies. And in 2021 that's just wrong.

As a woman with with plenty of body hair, I can't say that body hair removal is all that "feminizing". If it's a matter of convenience, it's a matter of convenience, and it's your own headcanon anyway.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cookie cutter because it kinda... Set the genre standard. If anything, a lot of things copy it.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I meannnnn it's not like I hate SM but watch any magical girl show made since and you'll notice the genre has evolved way beyond it. Princess Tutu, Doremi, Precure, Madoka, etc.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
most shippy endgame scenarios (in TV universes, at least) happen in the final season/episode/movie,

I don't think that's true at all

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
People like the idea of resolved romances. In reality, so many shows go downhill as soon as the leads get together that it's literally a cliche. Avoiding the Moonlighting Curse and maximizing shipping potential sounds win-win.

This is me with Paris and London. Movies always make everything look cleaner and nicer. Berlin, on the other hand, was pretty much as I expected. Maybe German TV shows are more grittily realistic?

...Madoka takes a lot directly from Sailor Moon tho, just makes it dark and depressing.

(Like literally, Soul Gems are just star seeds outside the body for one)

My friends who left New Orleans after/due to Katrina would agree with you; they didn't really recognize the city when they came back.

I have only been there once during Mardi Gras in the 80s and it was fascinating to me. I wish I'd had more time to do some of the tourist-y things but I did love the zoo, so that's something.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
...so? Just because a 30-year-old IP came up with a thing doesn't mean it's the best at utilizing it.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I visited several years before Katrina and it probably helped that I didn't have any sort of romanticized view of New Orleans, but I enjoyed it. The French Quarter is very tourist-centric, yes. I don't drink, so I didn't spend much time on Bourbon Street except to take a curious look. I had some delicious food, and some tourist stuff was still fun, like eating beignets at Cafe du Monde or poking around the cemeteries in the Garden District.

It might be that, but it's probably more that Berlin doesn't have the same reputation as Paris being a beautiful, sophisticated city full of art and culture. Not that Berlin isn't, it just doesn't have that expectation on the same level as Paris. It's just too easy to oversell Paris.

IA (contrary to some other people in the thread)

It's not that the concept is inherently bad, it's that I don't trust the MCU to do it well. I would rather rewatch Birds of Prey again any day.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ocean's 8 was a really fun movie. It was fun b/c it took advantage of the Met Gala event and how society views women in that way. It didn't use stereotypes, it just went "people don't pay attention to women in fancy dresses in jewelry at a big event. Let's use it" and ran with it.

Where as a lot of times, like say the "Expendabelles" leaks, instead of treating the movie as they did the Expendables and "okay we're going in guns blazing" they wanted to make the women sneaky and wear highheels and use sexpionage and it was stereotypical in a very bad way. So, I'm glad they've tabled it for now b/c if you're going to have an all female action move it needs to be more Birds of Prey not... Red Sparrow-esque.

So, if the all female Avengers went in with the idea of treating their female characters as actual warriors like Captain Marvel or the first Wonder Woman, then it would be more successful. The main question is... outside of Pepper Potts, are the female characters too similar in personality? Can they actually play off of each other well? That's what makes a good ensemble type movie.

Now the type of humor in the Ghostbuster reboot was cringe for me. It was infinitely better than the creepy original. But having women rip each other apart a la Bridesmaids has never been my cuppa tea. Fortunately, cringe humor hasn't ever been MCU humor, so maybe we'll be safe-ish.

/shrug I'll keep my expectations in check but I'll definitely watch it if it happens. But I don't think OP and others like them are wrong if they're not interested just because I am.

What are you doing today, FS?

Did the dishes, did my nails, doordashed some tea, watching the super bowl (idrc who wins, go Chiefs, I guess). Leftover homemade fried rice for dinner. Nice quiet day.

I dislike body hair irl too and this ends up applying to fiction too. If it exists, then yeah, fine, but I'd rather not see it drawn or described in detail, especially when it's not actually supposed to be there.

It depends on the creator. I know the Castle creators wanted Castle and Beckett to get together. And then drew it out two or three seasons too long.

Most the time I don't want creators to put their characters together and have canon pairings because they don't know how to write anything interesting with the pairing after it's done. (Castle was terrible at this.) It's a romance series problem. They get the pairing together, the book ends, the next book in the series is a new pairing. Gah.

So, a lot of times the pairing really devolves into only good if it's UST because the UST is the only reason there is a pairing at all. Like Castle and Beckett had nothing really in common, (Beckett keeping her private life private from Castle didn't really help) and thus wouldn't last as a couple no matter how much the creators pushed it.

Romance, especially long term romance that gets beyond the get together "honeymoon" stage, really is one of the hardest things to write and make believable. What happens once you answer "why can't they be together now?" is sometimes considered quite boring and so they come up with contrived conflicts of insecurity and bad communication to keep it "interesting." Bah.

Give me lots of Gomez and Morticia pairings or Evie and Rick from the Mummy. (But this is only my opinion.)

Post your dream fancasts for whatever you like here.

I'll go first. My dream fancast for Mara Jade is Michelle Yeoh.
