I like Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. I can actually buy him as a scientist, unlike Edward Norton or Eric Bana.

But...my jaw clenches every time I hear that bullsh*t about having seven PhDs. That's not how graduate education or research qualifications work. No one has that many PhDs. I mean, how long would it take you? And what would be the point? You can definitely transition to a related field without getting a new PhD.

It was bad enough in the movies, but then it got imported into fanfic too. Ugh.

[Somehow this is the thing that bugs me, while I'm perfectly happy to accept the fact that he routinely breaks the law of conservation of mass.]

It's not a realistic number but he is supposed to be an unrealistic supergenius, isn't he?

I don't know. Math, physics, chem, bio, engineering, that's five fields right there that would be in character.

It’s just... kind of not how PhDs work though? I get doing that many MScs maybe, but you can’t really speedrun a doctoral degree even if you do it in places where ~3 years is possible. The nature of publishing and grant applications and running experiments just takes *time*. Absolutely love the idea that one of Banner’s superpowers is speedrunning the editorial process.

That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always reviewer 2.

This was a fun joke when I first encountered it but now it’s 2021 and I’ve got a masters degree and a PhD and if I think about enduring one more day of academia I break out in hives. Why haven’t you run, Bruce!! The free conference lanyards can’t be that great!!

I was destroyed after my Masters. Sometimes I think about going back but then I talk to my friends who did or are doing doctorates...

I still suffer conferences as part of my career though! No conference arrival breakfast is worth such suffering.

One of the stories I'm not writing is a thriller about murders at an academic conference.

Because the only way to get a job with many PhDs is to murder someone with tenure.

Look, there is a REASON why he is always angry and it has nothing to do with gamma radiation or past childhood trauma and all to do with peer reviews and publishing in different journals and to be fair, one of those PhD may be 1000% fake from that time he hacked into a college mainframe to try and create a new identity and it just stuck.

Yeah, I think most of them are either honorary doctorates or he bought them from some Russian university.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
All Bruce Banner’s publications are in predatory journals, this is canon now.

the comics do this too with all the sciency characters (I think Tony and Dr. Strange has some sort of exchange), so there's no getting away from this, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here to agree and now I'm laughing at anon's headcanons. In which Bruce Banner works as a reviewer for a predatory journal.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how the entire current phase of the franchise is built around The Snap, one of the dumbest fucking plot devices outside of an MST3K movie, I don't think that realism is on the agenda at Marvel.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but do you not see a difference between "hey, here's this (nonsensical) sci-fi/supernatural plot point" and "Bruce Banner is so smart he's a SUPER-HYPER-doctor"?

Yup, unrealistic. But so are a lot of things. This is a fantasy movie, I'm not exactly expecting realism.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes, somehow this is worse than just saying he has an IQ of 300 or something.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I headcanon this away by saying he has maybe two PhDs or a whole bunch of interlinked credentials, but it took so long and was so much effort he just elevates it every time he talks about it. "I have FIVE PHDS OKAY." "How many PhDs does Bruce Banner have? SEVEN." "Tony I have nine PhDs and that was not covered in any of them." "Last week you had five PhDs." "I'm rounding up."

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
This I can accept. He's an expert in many scientific fields but the fields in which he grows his fucks are barren.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, love this

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly never thought he was being serious, that he was being sarcastic/snarky in a "Look this is how smart I am!" sort of way and that we weren't meant to take it literally.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
This cracks me up, I fucking love it.

Well, it's not impossible.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
But he would almost certainly have to have been a perpetual student and that doesn't seem like it would fit into his backstory timeline. Though, depending on the institution and fields, it is possible to pursue a double doctorate.

There is a 45-year-old from Michigan who has 14 degrees (AA, BA, MDes, MPhil, MFA, 2 MS, 6 MAs, DDes), some from universities like Oxford, Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, and Dartmouth. Another guy from Michigan has 30, though he's in his late 70s.

RK Rai, a 65-year-old Indian man, has over 30 degrees, which include 5 PhDs and 3 DLitts, which is 8 doctorates.

I just wish the MCU would tone the "genius" stuff a bit in general, because there's way too many genius geniusy geniuses around and everything is so effortless for them. But in the MCU, science is basically magic, and all of it is just giant power fanstasy, so I don't really expect it to change.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-12 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I feel like the dumbest thing I ever did was get ONE PhD. I know a few people who had major career changes who got a second and/or simultaneously completed two in related fields. No supposedly smart person would ever do more than that, so it actually suggests the complete opposite about the character than what it is trying to do, IMO.

It's pure mind fluff fiction, anon.

Stop trying to figure it out, that way lies madness.
