N!S1 I agree about Angelina Jolie. I think she's hideous. (She looked a lot better before she had facial reconstruction, or whatever she did to fix her original jawline.)

116 Good luck finding a platonic friendship with an older man.

152 I don't even really like that character or Gurren Lagaan in general but I think her design and way of speaking is adorable. Sorry!

165 Hell yeah! Isn't he the only redheaded guy, anyway?

169 Koreans actually make all the anime, so why is it surprising that they could get a show taken off the air?

171 But nobody cares about what most "internet feminists" have to say, since they usually say it in such a caustic way. Also, people on the internet don't usually care about what you have to say, period. I think it's more important to point out these kinds of things in real life, at work, around people you know, etc.

173 I think a lot of people do that.

Informing people and organizing activism is making a difference no matter where you do it, you obnoxious concern troll fuckhead.

I'm not a troll, that's what I seriously believe. Are you going to revoke my feminist card?

How nice that you actually believe it. You're still acting like an obnoxious concern troll fuckhead. Stop questioning other people's activism and I'll stop thinking you're a concern troll.

Jesus Christ, don't be a bitch about about it. You're the one who's acting like a troll here. All childings did was state her (perfectly rational and accepted) opinion on a secret. And to be honest, I agree with her. As much as I like to see people trying to raise womens' places in the world, I can't stand most feminists exactly because of stuff like this.
Can't you just calm down for a minute?

Given that there are many activist groups that do a lot of work online, and a lot of grassroots organizations that work through blogs, etc, I think you have a very narrow and somewhat outdated view of activism.

If in talking about race or feminism I change even one mind (and I have) then I've accomplished something—certainly something more than not speaking out. If the only activists who merit the name in your eyes are people getting arrested at a protest or lobbying their legislature, then I guess you don't think there are many activists at all.

Re: 171

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nevermind that, what you said doesn't even qualify as concern-trolling. I don't know what anon is on about.

Re: 171

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"No one cares what internet feminists think, you're not going out and doing anything. Anyway you're just being too angry."

What part of that isn't concern trolling? It's chock full of condescension and 'if only you'd do it the way I think you should do it you wouldn't upset people~'

Re: 171

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Concern trolling is when your approach is not "You're inneffectual," but "I'm just so concerned that nothing is getting done!" I think you're confusing the two.

171

[identity profile] homolingual.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nice tone argument along with the concern trolling.

Re: 171

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's concern trolling, but the tone argument is pretty bullshit, yeah.

My question would have to be - if it's not making a difference either way, why do you care? Let them do as they will, if you don't think it helps then that's fine.

Re: 171

[identity profile] homolingual.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Even if it's not concern trolling, it's certainly a method of silencing, which is bad as well.

See. I think it does help. If not the person that I'm opening dialogue with, then someone else who is reading this. Hell, that's how I started into looking at sociology, an argument on the Internet that I wasn't even involved with but happened to read. So I think being vocal even on the Internet helps even if it's just indirectly.

Re: 171

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, she's right in that the attitude that we need to confront is one that says if you're just sitting around talkin gabout it, nothing is getting done and no one will listen to people on the internet. I think it's useless to jump on her, because she's right about it - those are the people we need to convince, too, right?

I think it does help, too, and in fact it did help me. Being vocal anywhere helps everywhere. But there's just no use in fighting over this, it just makes everybody look defensive.

Re: 171

[identity profile] homolingual.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she's actually saying that that attitude needs to be confronted, more that that's the way the world is and there are more important things to be done. That's why I'm responding the way I am.

Re: 171

I'm not silencing anyone, I'm just disagreeing. If she (I'm assuming OP is female) takes it that way, it's her own internalization of my argument. I didn't tell anyone what to do.

Re: 171

[identity profile] homolingual.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 02:26 am (UTC)(link)

Were you not implying that the OP should give up and concentrate on "more important" things? That's exactly what I got from this, and that's a silencing tactic. If that's not what you meant, I'd like to know what you did intend with that comment.

The way she speaks is just an idiosyncracy, it's not her whole personality. Honestly, I stopped watching the show around the time she was introduced, so I might have liked her, but I'm not really interested in her actual character one way or the other. However, I do love her character design and the way she talks.

:D Yeah, he's the only redhead! (That just makes him cuter. ^ ^;; )

(Anonymous) 2009-01-24 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I first became aware of feminism, antiracism, etc., because of fandom's resident feminists. These things just weren't discussed by the people I knew IRL, and my environment (and self-absorption) was such that I could honest-to-god think that the world had already been made mostly fair and just. Eventually my RL did change, of course, but I probably would have entrenched myself in other ideologies before I ever encountered modern feminism etc. in any positive context in my real life.

So, given my own experience, I can't believe Internet activism is worthless. I also think that personal etc. spaces are some of the best places for discussion: anyone seeking out an activist blog *has* already made up their mind, as you're arguing is always the case, but the silly teenie who stumbles on a discussion in her favorite author's journal is probably less decided, and other kinds of activism may not be reaching her.

Re: 171.

Just because YOU don't think the people in the box on your desk are real doesn't mean the REST of the internet necessarily makes the same mistake.
