I haven't read the book so I feel like examples, since I doubt (or I guess hope) characters are not literally being written as saying, "Ah yes, racism/etc, that's bad!"

I was told this book was a queer romance so I read it, absolutely hated it. I'm glad people who find it comforting enjoy it! But I had the same reaction as OP. Nothing happens in this book, the plot is just "prejudice is bad" over and over in a super simplistic and boring way, AND I really hated that it stuck me inside the head of a boring adult in a world full of magical children, so instead of enjoying the magic I was stuck cosplaying a person who just needs to clean up after everyone and take care of everyone, etc. Again, I'm sure this is someone's escapist fantasy, it's just EMPHATICALLY not mine.

That said, a friend literally gave this book to her middle grader who LOVED it, so like... this book is just literally a middle grade book.

I mean, it's not a terrible book, but I went in researching prior to buying the novel with the expectation that it was a book for adults, so it'd have a writing tone and narrative FOR adults. As it stands, the novel is fine, but I'm kind of disappointed major sites that sold the book and my local Barnes n' Noble placed this book in the main fiction section instead of, say, YA or something like that.

I agree that this book was a little eh. I was suggested it after I really enjoyed Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World, which I thought was a really sweet middle grade LGBT book, but it was a little too twee for my taste.

I never liked any of his books, including the ones for adults, because they are so dumbed down and read like a twelve year old trying to explain adult concepts. His writing is atrocious.

Yes!!

Newt is by far my favorite character of all time (Like. I don't know. I can't explain it. I just love the twitchy lil guy). Since it's a small fandom, I'll take literally any fic I can get my hands on. Most of it's Newt/Hermann, which is fine because I love that ship, but I miss the early days when there was a more consistent stream of darker fic with Newt/Hannibal. Now it's all basically comfort fic. Which, again, is nice... but sometimes you want the fucked up stuff.

Anyway what I'm saying is there are literally dozens of us!

Don't worry OP. I watched the show as it aired from the start and I can't believe everyone is as old as they are now. In my head they'll always be the ages they were during the heyday (both actors and characters alike.)

I saw Wolf’s Rain when I was the same age as you and what happened to Toboe destroyed me. I just wasn’t expecting it because all the anime I’d seen up to that point always had the good guys win no matter what, but Wolf’s Rain isn’t that kind of show. It’s a wonderful anime and I’ve rewatched it a few times, but that episode and all the ones after are brutal and still make me cry.
