Oh man, thank you for saying it so succinctly.

+1

I'm enjoying Falcon and the Winter Soldier a lot, but the problem with bringing real life trauma and racism into a show is you can't punch it to death. So. Like. I don't know how the heroes are supposed to come out on top.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess we'll find out in two weeks!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what this means...

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither. They seem to say that because it's a big corporation propriety (Disney) and/or a superheroes tv show, it can't touch on heavy subjects with depth. I strongly disagree.

This seems extremely snobby? Like, as someone who generally prefers "prestige" TV and who freely admits to being at least a little bit snobby with my taste in fiction, this secret still feels extremely snobby to me.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
In what sense? "Genuine" media is no less accessible than Marvel shit.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It does read as very snobby to me too.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Disagree. So far I'd place the MCU shows somewhere above the majority of mainstream "network" TV, and in the middle of the streaming-service-originals pack. Personally it hasn't thrilled me, but it's been thoroughly decent; easily good enough to earn its keep, and with the real potential for growth.

Basically, it's squeaking into the top third of TV content, IMO, and I've never been one to shit on B- content when there's so much "How did this even get MADE?" level trash around.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Each to their own. They're the biggest load of shallow badly realised trash I've seen in a long time personally.

Sooooo...what artistically pure and serious fandoms are you in, OP?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
seriously, i'd LOVE to hear their answer. /s

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Right!? MTE.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
So... You have no idea the number of grief counsellors that contributed to WandaVision. Cool. You do you. Enjoy your ignorance-based strong opinion.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Lol ok

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like a...short-sighted take. Are they fantastic at dealing with grief and other serious issues? No, but I’d rather they try to give the characters and storylines some real-world complexities and weight, and to make things matter. Genres like this are DESIGNED to use metaphors and unreal circumstances to address real issues, and as such, can actually reach a much broader audience, including people who may not ever seek or realize they need to seek out things that will help them deal with various emotions and experiences. Sure, it is presented in a shiny, marketable package, but I’d take it over endlessly bleak drama and/or completely mindless (or worse, gratuitously violent, racist, misogynistic) action any day.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
NOP: A big problem I have with Wandavision is that the emotion beats become secondary to very aggressive and intrusive advertising for the MCU franchise as a whole. So every time Wanda attempts to deal with grief, there's a big conspicuous fanservice easter egg reminding us that Tony and Dr. Strange--two characters who never make an appearance--are a big fucking deal.

In comics, writers and editors would routinely create a space for telling intimate stories about powerful emotions, a "day in the life" between story arcs or chapters where our stoic as heck heroes can break down, cry, process, vent to strangers, or whatever they needed to do. FFS, even Wolverine got an opportunity to cry in his beer in a dive bar listening to country music now and then.

Wandavision can't really deal with the grief in the current scene because it's too busy dropping references to other movies. Her past is a Stark(tm) logo. Her future is a confrontation with the Sorcerer Supreme(tm). In the ultimate confrontation of Wandavision, Agatha seriously loses the plot in choosing to monologue about shit outside of the bubble, centering on a character that Wanda barely met.

I think this is kinda silly... I mean, isn't the vast majority of modern media completely subject to the financial needs of mega-corporations? Why does that mean it shouldn't be able to be about grief (or whatever other topic it wants to be about)? Like, I don't personally find anything particularly deep or meaningful in the Marvel properties, but if some people do, how is that a problem?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were pretty creative with their depiction of grief and I enjoyed the format. but I didn't feel anything in relation. Something about it lacked a little soul. I empathized more with the Rambeau character, but she wasn't that developed. I don't think it's completely lacking.
