I don't really care that much one way or the other (I live in a Commonwealth nation, though, so there is no escaping the coverage), but I am already really annoyed by the nastiness of some of the jokes.
Yes, he looked weird: That's because he was ninety-nine and basically all ninety-nine-year-olds look a little unnerving.
Yes, he had a history of saying embarrassingly racist shit: He was born in 1921 and spent seventy years speaking publicly at least once a week, it would have been pretty surprising if he hadn't stuck both feet in it a fair few times.
Yes, the British monarchy is of very debatable use, and the logic of the existence of monarchies at all in the modern world is pretty arguable. What does that really have to do with saying nasty things about one old man's death?

I don't think anyone has to say anything nice about him if they don't want to, but why are so many people going out of their way to be rude?

A lot of people don't like the British elite because they mostly suck but they still have lives of extraordinarily wealth and privilege. I think that's most of it.

Anyway, it's hardly anything new; when Castlereagh died, Richard Carlile said that he should be buried at a crossroads with a stake through his heart (not to mention Byron's famous elegy). It is what it is.

There's a whole lot of shitty rich people out there who are much, much more unpleasant than the British royal family. I think it's more that most of them are either a) less public than the Windsors (e.g. every mining billionaire in the world), or b) get to pretend they're "self-made" and manipulate their public image to that end (e.g. every tech bro whose parents invested $100k into baby's first startup).

Some people are born cunts and think flaunting their edginess is more important than respecting others' lives or time of grief.

"You are a woman, aren't you?" he said to a Kenyan woman, who was presenting him with a small gift in 1984.

"If you stay here much longer you will all be slitty-eyed," the Prince told British exchange students who lived in Xian in 1986.

"I don't think a prostitute is more moral than a wife, but they are doing the same thing," when dismissing claims those who slaughter for meat have greater moral authority than those who partake in blood sports in 1988.

"How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to pass the test?" he asked a Scottish driving instructor in 1995.

"You managed not to get eaten then?" the Prince asked a British student who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea, in 1998.

"Deaf? If you're near there, no wonder you are deaf," he told a group of deaf school children, who were nearby a Caribbean steel drum band in 2000.

"Do you still throw spears at each other?" he asked a group of Indigenous Australians in 2002, while on a visit to Australia with the Queen.

"That's a nice tie ... Do you have any knickers in that material?" he asked Annabel Goldie, the Scottish Conservative leader, when welcoming Benedict XVI to Edinburgh in 2010.

"The Philippines must be half-empty — you're all here running the NHS," he told nurses at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in 2013.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnope fuck this guy! The world's better off without him :)

The question to ask is if people *wanted* him to speak at least once a week for seventy years. Seventy years is an eternity for the public sphere.

AYRT - For reasons completely incomprehensible to me, there are a lot of people out there who are positively giddy at the thought that Princess Beatrice/the Duke of Kent/the Earl of Wessex is going to come and cut the ribbon at the opening of the local bridge/highway/factory, and might possibly shake their hand and say something nice about the town. I don't get it, but there you go. There is a never-ending list of things that someone wants a member of the royal family to come to.
...Actually, as Phillip's main role in the royal family was 'trail around after the queen and take over hand-shaking when she's tired', he's probably been to more of these shindigs than most of the cousins combined.

Re: Prince Philip is dead

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a silly question, though. What do you think happened, exactly - that Prince Philip crashed the opening of a children's hospital and forced his way to the podium while the royal guards made sure he had a captive audience for his speech? As weird as it might sound to you (and me, honestly) there are many, many people who are eager to turn up and see/hear a royal speak just because they're royal. Similarly, there are many organizations that would welcome the presence of a royal at fundraisers or whatever because it's a surefire way to raise awareness, and possibly money.

I'm not saying it makes sense, or that this is a good thing. But to even ask whether or not there are people interested in hearing a member of the royal family speak is... LOL. All the working royals have a regular schedule of engagements and public events they attend, on behalf of the Queen.

TIL Philip was one year younger than my grandmother. Of course she had a stroke and died at 89 but it never occurred to me he was her age.

....are you suggesting that calling this man a racist or joking about his racism or people expressing how they feel about his racism is nasty? did you have a conniption with the comments after thatcher died?

anyway public figures who contribute to racist public sentiment don't get to dodge public response to that history because they're dead. I get why the other racist members would be taken aback tho, but they deliberately shield themselves from public criticism that isn't in papers so.......

DMX, too.

Just to counter the ageist notion floating around in a lot of threads about this that "of course, Prince Philip was horrifically racist! He was born in 1921!," let's take a moment to remember some of the many, many people from all walks of life who were born in 1921 who are no longer with us, but still managed not to be primarily known for being creepy, racist fucks for their entire lives.

I'll start with Eileen Beasley, Ram Chandra, Robina Asti, and Abe Vigoda. All four of them made history for very different reasons, and not one of them ever congratulated a countryman for making it out of Papua New Guinea without being eaten by the natives.

They all deserve to be remembered more kindly than Prince Philip.

Re: Prince Philip is dead

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, uh... nothing against any of these people, Ms Asti sounds like a great woman, and Mrs Beasley certainly did some damn good work, but how do you know none of them said bigoted things? Ram Chandra could have been a massive racist, Eileen Beasley could have been a homophobe, Abe Vigoda... well, he played 'Chief Tobi' of the 'Waponis' in Joe Versus the Volcano, complete with feather bonnet and face paint, so I wouldn't be tripping over myself to laud his liberal sensitivities.
They may have been notable people in their circles, and even left behind important legacies, but none of them spent one-tenth as much time in front of microphones and cameras as old Phil did (well, except Abe, and he got a script!)

...oh hey, Abe was in North too, as 'Alaskan Grandpa'. You know, the kid's movie where the Inuit send their elderly out to die on ice floes. Hm.

Re: Prince Philip is dead

(Anonymous) 2021-04-10 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't say that they never did or said racist things. I said that doing and saying racist and pervy things wasn't their legacy, as will be the case with old Phil. Frankly, the amount of time the man spent in front of a microphone is more condemnation, not less. With that much speaking under his belt, if he wasn't complete garbage then the amazing, kind and inspiring things (or at the very least, the good, but boring, things)he's said and done should be coming to people's minds at least as quickly than the horrifying, racist, sexist, and perverted ones.

And it's cute that you think the royal family doesn't receive any sort of script, prompt or training about what they should or should not say in public.
