Purge the Poison from Marina - this was very Kate Bush-y so maybe this is why I was reminded of it now lol. Very nice!

Hah, that would be one way to describe it! There's definitely some Celtic stuff going on in this one (which I think is how it wound up on that playlist) but looking at Google, there's a mention of "art rock" which... yeah, I guess that would be a good descriptor for Kate Bush's music in general.

I have a bad habit of listening to artists who paint really vivid word pictures and then oops I just wrote 10k words or more of a fanfic I had no intention of writing before the randomizer hit on a particular song a couple days ago. :P

I've been writing fanfic since the 1980s and there have ALWAYS been people who don't want to put any effort in.

Maybe not in your circles. Not really in my circles, either, because people who want to *try* to put out good work (even if they don't succeed) tend to find one another. But it was out there.

But I agree with the secret--if you're complaining about the lack of response to your fic, but aren't going to at least try to do the best you are personally capable of (even if that's just "run spellcheck" or "read the thing over before you hit 'post' to be sure that you haven't left in a paragraph of what looks like a history essay," and yes, I have read that), then I have no sympathy.

Anyone who describes themselves as "an empath" or "highly empathic" is immediately on my "do not trust, hell, do not even interact if I can avoid them" list.

In my experience, those people have *always* been, at best, self-centered.

I just had a dude sneak up behind me and put his hand, at least I hope it was just his hand, on my ass and then run away while I screamed wtf. My fault for going on a walk at 9:30 pm by myself. My roommate says I need a stun gun, but a) they're illegal here and b) I'd probably electrocute myself with it.

He was a young black guy and I'm a middle aged white lady, so there's no way I'm calling the cops so they can waste resources hunting innocent men who happen to be black and within a ten-mile radius, but I honestly was hoping I was old and fat enough to be invisible to creeps. The last time this happened to me was in 2008, and it's always happened in daylight before.

So far the pattern has been catcalling: groups of young white dudes, "nice tits!": solo old white dudes, catcalling and propositioning followed by vile insults or bottles thrown at me when I ignore them or laugh: solo young white dudes, everything from just creepy to sincere but disturbing flirting: latino dudes, groping and stalking: black dudes (and other white cis women.) I'm ace and sometimes I wonder if I would have been bi instead if I had any positive sex-adjacent interactions to counteract all the fucked up shit.

I just wanted to go for a walk. I don't want to carry mace and be hyper vigilant just to wander around my neighborhood. I'm tired. I posted in the wishful thinking thread earlier, but if I was pretty it would be worse, it was bad enough when I was ugly but young.

Let me be honest for a second - it's not as easy as some people assume to find commenters' whose opinions are truely constructive and insightful. Most people just comment on their preferences in regards to pairings and life choices made by characters, not, for example, pacing or structure issues, so their "critique" might be intresting on some level, but not really all that useful, unless by "I want to improve" you mean "I want to be able to craft a fic that this particular fandom will love because it's in most fans taste".

Francis William Bourdillon wrote one of my favorites - The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. I like many of Robert Frost's poems. I think Ogden Nash and Shel Silverstein can be very clever. Maya Angelou's poems can be pretty amazing and part of that is her recitation. I like works that have a very strong cadence, like Poe's The Raven or Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride, so I tend to like Shakespeare and Seuss.

I like some of Emily Dickinson's poems, but others leave me cold.

I don't really care for Percy Bysshe Shelley.

I think the implication was supposed to be that Simon and River Tam were a fraction Chinese? But yeah, if that was the intention, then it's almost worse. Like, why cast white people and then imply they're slightly Chinese? Why not just cast Chinese actors?
