Sometimes I see these promo posters for Asian dramas and I think damn, what right do these guys have to be so goddamn good-Looking? I haven't even brushed my hair today, LOL.

Slightly off-topic, but I found this on TV Tropes: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheChrisCarterEffect

“Carter's attempted Amazon series The After was ultimately called off because of this trope. Amazon wanted a "show bible" before the first season was made, Carter preferred to make it up as he went along. It was an especially tough sell since Carter wanted the show to last for 99 episodes at a whopping $40 million per 9 episode season.”

Original comment author here: thank you secret maker. I really like how you laid this out!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The premise of the article - as stated - is clearly ridiculous, since there are widely popular genres (Eg, soap operas) in which it is widely known and accepted that the plot will go on forever without coming to a satisfactory resolution

OP of the secret comment. I am definitely feeling this. Many of the strongest Monster of the Week episodes will probably be among my favourites when I'm finished. I'm kinda over the story-arc for the series mythology by this point.

We just got to season 9 and I'll be honest, my enthusiasm to keep going is suffering. Not just the obvious that Mulder being gone has totally altered the dynamic, but it's very much feeling like watching a dying show. T-1000 gets some pretty nice character moments but then annoys me by managing to extremely out-Scully Scully by seeing all this shit and still being like "nah, I don't believe, sorry." He literally died and got brought back to life and is still doing it. URGH.

I watched that show religiously during its original airing, but by the time the Samantha reveal finally came, I'd been kicked in the teeth by Chris Carter so many times that I couldn't even muster the energy to be angry. It might be worse for someone who binge-watched later because those viewers don't have time to reach the ground-down apathy of a real-time viewer.

Not OP obviously but the funny thing is that the early season plot arc episodes are fantastic. Just taken as episodes of television, season 1-3 plot arc episodes are some of the strongest work the show ever did (with some exceptions, although I personally have a soft spot for Albert Hosteen).

It's just that it never went anywhere, and then from around season 5 onwards, the plot arc episodes are just totally awful. But taken on their own terms, EBE or Piper Maru / Apocrypha are phenomenal TV.

Maybe I should make this it's own secret.

How was your weekend, FS?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Had chili outside the house for lunch and iced mint tea afterwards.

Have you ever clicked too much on one topic...

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
...and now you have too many of the same topic in your recommended feed?

Signed, someone who is sick and tired of pregnancy time lapses in their Youtube feed.

Well, my work meeting yesterday went well, and I was able to get some more work as well.

Other than that, though, been a little rough because I've had a massive headache all weekend. Meds aren't touching it. And I didn't sleep well either night because of said headache. So I haven't watched anything, just been reading ebooks. A couple of my old favorite erotica books that I have on my Kindle.

Kudos for sticking with it that long! I watched it as it aired and was getting less enthusiastic after season 6. Meanwhile, I still like and rewatch the MOTW episodes, even the cheezy ones.

OP of the secret and for what it's worth anon, I agree about the assessment of the first three seasons as some of those plot arc episodes were still pretty good.

I'm not sure if I'm 100% right here but I get the feeling it's when production was moved/the first movie happened that the wheels started to fall off. We wanted to do this properly so did watch the movie when we got to that point. I liked it but it just seemed to create more questions and the answers weren't always great.

Yep, this

I have heard good things about the Russian adaptation. (Adaptations? There might be two.) Some people have said they're as good as Jeremy Brett, which I am curious about. I'm desperate to find it/them but have no idea how to . :/

Yes! It happens to me all the time. I want more music recs, but Youtube thinks I want more doctor, lawyer, and Reddit vids thanks to some of the things I watch sometimes.

I think Youtube just wants me to watch longer things more often. Because it also keeps reccing me videos that are an hour or more of music all together, even though I never watch those vids. I want the vids with one song only.

Worse. Way worse. I clicked the wrong news article and ended up opening some right wing bollocks about covid vaccines. Now MSN news shows me right wing news articles. D:

Oh damn it, yes. I am lucky enough to have two that have set the standard for me and a couple of nice ones on the side, but it's so frustrating to wait for something new which eventually turns out meh. It also kills me that the authors of those two great fics never wrote anything for the pair again.

Thankfully, even though my main fandom is smallish and the number of fics for my two OTPs even smaller, the quality of the writing in my fandom is above average. There are a lot of great fics to choose from, although I've read them all and am now stuck just rereading my favorites.

But I remember when I was super into Doctor/Donna shipping, and it was always frustrating because the quality of the fics wasn't good, and 95% of them involved River and Rose bashing, so there was only very occasionally an actually decent fic.

I've had that happen too. It also seems to happen if I listen to the wrong music. I happen to like some Christian music, but if I listen to it on Youtube I also get recced awful right-wing and/or fundamentalist stuff I have no interest in.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you checked YouTube? I seem to remember seeing it on there a few years ago, but couldn't get into it. To me, the English-ness of the setting and characters is such a big part of the stories that it felt too weird hearing it in Russian.

Re: Have you ever clicked too much on one topic...

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh absolutely. I like to watch video essays sometimes about all sorts of things, movies/TV/general trends and shit, and every single time I'll get recommended these chode right-wing dickbags on my youtube simply because it seems like a lot of those right-wing wankers make those kinds of videos.

Like, youtube I was watching someone dissect the music in CATS, stop thinking I want to watch some fucknugget rant about women for 50 mins.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I would argue that soap operas aren't a wildly popular genre. Tbh, there's a rather dated form of television which is probably why there are only 4 daytime soaps still on tv here in the U.S, and their ratings are garbage even by daytime tv standards. And when you're making a show that is supposed to air new episodes 260 times a year indefinitely, there's no way anyone's gonna make a show bible for that.

The X-Files wasn't Carter's only show. There was Millennium and Harsh Realm, too, and he was making them up as he went along. I liked it but Millennium was a mess and Harsh Realm got canceled after something like 9 episodes. He doesn't have a good track record with tv writing. Amazon was smart to nope out of that deal considering how "Make It Up As I Go Along" didn't work out so well for The X-Files.

Too bad because I loved The After's pilot.

It jars me much less in Russian than in American for some reason. I think because the subtitles have the right accent in my head. Thanks, I'll look on yt!

I'm not entirely sure what I clicked on that caused my Google account to think I want it to pop up notifications on my phone every time the Atlanta Braves are about to play or done playing. I don't live anywhere near Atlanta and don't even really watch my own baseball team all that often, so all I can figure is that I clicked on/shared too many stories in the last few months about A: voter suppression/runoffs in Georgia, B: the mass shooting there, C: the MLB getting it right for once and moving the All-Star game. Maybe also clicked on baseball scores for my team to see how they were doing and they happened to be playing the Braves that day? I am lost. And also completely uninterested in the Atlanta Braves.

My ONE FIC is an abandoned work in progress :( I've, like, dreamed about this story being continued, I want it that much.
