Agreed!

I liked him a lot, too, and I feel like he got waaay too much hatred for being a flawed person when he was really a pretty realistic teenage boy. I quit at some point in season 4 so he might've gotten worse, but in the early seasons it was like 90% unjustified.

Honestly, a lot of it was (not so thinly) veiled racism. People would hold things like being manipulated by an Argent against him - as if that didn't happen to Derek - or making similar mistakes that Stiles would.

Nayrt and I'm not in this fandom but can you expand a little bit on the racism point?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
tyler posey (the actor who portrays scott) is mexican.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But the character is white, right? It seems like a stretch to suggest that the character is white but the people who dislike the character are primarily motivated by the fact that the actor's mother was Mexican?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
At minimum his character is half, because I believe his dad is portrayed as a POC but I can't remember if his mom is, it's been a long time since I've watched the show.

I thought Melissa, with her maiden name of Delgado, was supposed to be of Mexican descent. And his father, played by Matthew Del Negro, was supposed to be white. I thought it was supposed to mirror Tyler Posey's ethnicity (his father is actor John Posey, who played Dr. Fenris in a Teen Wolf webisode).

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Or people arguing how him healing a dog was a sign of him being an abusive monster? Honestly that fandom was a fucking hell-ride and a half.

In what universe is Derek being a hormonal teenager who was taken advantage of by an older woman not knowing she was a psychotic werewolf hunter planning to murder his entire family even remotely comparable to the shit Scott did in season two while knowing exactly what kind of person Gerard was?
Also I don't really remember him being manipulated by Gerard. Though maybe I'm forgetting something, it's been awhile.
I do remember him and Deaton conspiring to murder Gerard using an unwilling Derek as a weapon, because of course the future 'True Alpha' can't get his hands dirty by just poisoning that fucker directly instead of going with that convoluted plan.

I'm not fond of Scott, he has his moments where I somewhat like him, but overall I really don't for many reasons (and from what I've read I'd probably like him even less if hadn't stopped watching after season 4) and it has exactly nothing to do with racism. Not saying that isn't the case with some people, but I've seen this accusation thrown around quite a bit without any justification.

Actually I probably wouldn't dislike him so much if the show wasn't so intent on convincing me he was great guy, while showing me very little evidence of that.

NARYT.

That story was so utterly nonsensical that I didn't get annoyed at the character, it made me got 'wtf' at the writers because no actual human being would ever do something so ridiculously convoluted, never mind a teenager who very specifically wasn't shown as being the kind of character who could scheme like that. I'm not saying it was OOC, because I think by that point any consistent characterization for most of them had been thrown out the window, it was just a plot that made me tilt my head and sheer bafflement at the screen while I was watching.

But then Teen Wolf and good writing: it never knew her.

Also I don't really remember him being manipulated by Gerard. Though maybe I'm forgetting something, it's been awhile.

Gerard LITERALLY brought in a transformed Jackson into his bedroom and threatened his mom unless he did what he said!

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you know the meaning of the word 'manipulation'.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I don't mean to sound edgy, but I don't think that really holds outside of the US. He's obviously American, whatever his background. There's no obvious distinction. Also, nobody hated Melissa and by your logic shouldn't she have been equally loathed?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also someone who never made it past season 4, and MTE.

I can get people being a bit irritated or annoyed by him, he was a bit annoying sometimes! And I say this as someone who loved him. But the level of sheer unmitigated hatred he got still blows my mind, like he got the amount of vitriol usually directed at female characters 'getting in the way' of the fandom m/m ship except he wasn't even doing that?

But then I often felt like this fanbase forgot that it was a show about dumb teenagers.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I felt like he suffered from the quality of writing. The character itself was let down by the piss poor decisions the writers made for him. It was such a shame.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked him just fine originally, but in my opinion they ruined the character with the True!Alpha! bullshit.

He gets bitten by accident, spends two seasons griping about it and trying to get rid of his werewolfiness, but lo and behold, he's actually the werewolf equivalent of the chosen one or something. Would have been a lot more interesting if he had to work his way up.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, the only other way to be an alpha would be to kill someone. Granted that could've been an interesting take but eh.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I always thought it would be interesting if Scott killed someone to save Stiles’ life. Then he would struggle with the guilt of it. Stiles would struggle with the guilt of not being capable of saving himself. It would have been a far more interesting story than ‘Scott’s a true alpha so he’s clearly good and moral and blah blah”.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
That would have been an amazing take on it. The writers really missed a take there.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
da

And that would've been a million times more interesting take than the Chosen One bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I never watched the show 'till the end but I liked Scott, he was a neat kid, if a bit stupid because well: teenager. But I liked that he wasn't a perfect protagonist, he had to work for what he got. That and he was such a sweetie with animals, that shit always melts my heart.
