I don't get the appeal for Taylor Swift, nor the gay-coding I keep seeing about her on Tumblr - but good for you OP!

Young (white) lesbians want a young, white and attractive gay icon.

Not even that complicated.

It's really just as simple as, there are an immense amount of young gay women who are also incredibly big Taylor Swift fans. Nothing more complicated or deeper to read into it than that.

I'm not a lesbian but isn't Kristen Stewart one? And I'm pretty sure there're others. I don't get caring whether any particular celebrities share my (ace) orientation, but I would bet lesbian TS fans specifically want her to be one, rather than any random young female celebrity.

lol and they picked Taylor Swift??

Did you not bother reading the other replies before you posted

IKR?! That's what makes it kind of amusing to me, like, y'all really went and chose the straightest fucking straight girl in the industry, huh?

Not saying it's impossible she's secretly bi. Just saying that if I had to make a list of People Who Come Across As True Kinsey Zeros, Taylor Swift would be high on that list.

I'm a long-time TS fan, but yeah, arguments about gay-coding are pure tinhattery. And that's not some homophobic "my fave can't be gay" bullshit. I'm other-than-straight myself, and I would love if she, against every indication that she is straight as a very straight arrow, turned out to be lgbt in any capacity. But there is no gay coding. There just isn't. Which is to say that nothing in her music is intentionally implying or hinting at queerness. If people want to read queerness into her music, awesome, more power to them. But the tinhatting is exasperating, as it always is.

how on earth can a real person be gay-coded? that's a fictional concept to be applied to fictional constructs, not living people.

Her songs

People who say that are saying it about her songs, primarily

(Anonymous) 2021-04-20 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
right. that makes more sense, and i can get lgbt fans finding her lyrics relatable even if it's not the given intent of her music.

LGB subtext was kind of a thing in the 80s and early 90s when being too explicitly gay could get an act dropped from mainstream radio play. Melissa Etheridge had two albums full of playing the pronoun game and dropping code that we used to describe living in the closet before she came out publicly. (Apparently it was a badly kept secret to start with.)

In these days of streaming services, you no longer have conservative gatekeepers curating playlists that triangulate for the purpose of selling minivans. Apparently some record execs warn newcomers not to come out still. But arguments that the chart-topping 1% of artists have to live in the closet to protect their reputations no longer make sense these days.

(My big beef here is with Larries and babygate, but I also think it applies to Swift.)

Thank you - I like some of her songs just fine, but I can't muster up any more enthusiasm than that. I don't hate her! She's fine! But seeing her everywhere makes me feel crazy sometimes.
