As a female millenial, I feel like despite people making fun of us for being immature, I never got a chance to enjoy being young. And now I'm starting to age, and Gen Z is making fun of us for being out of touch while so many people my age I know still don't have the traditional markers of being settled into middle age that Boomers and older GenX have (when you're not dependent on your parents and you get to ignore whether or not teenagers think you're cool).

Also a Millennial (on the older side) and I often wonder if Gen Z mocking us is them trying to cope with the knowledge deep down that what came for us is coming for them too. Let's face it, the idea that you'll be better off (especially financially and later in retirement) than the generations that came before you is pretty much dead at the moment. It's easy to make wisecracks about a 30something renting an overpriced room in a flatshare with other 30somethings when you're still living in your parental home.

But I also think it often isn't that deep and it's young people being young people. Although, I feel a tiny bit deflated sometimes because in my teens I remember looking up to (not mocking) Gen X and rolling my eyes at my parents generation instead, so it does feel like we're getting it from both directions at times.

God, I think of where my Dad (Silent) was at 37 and where my sister (Boomer) was at 37, and here I am at 37 being parasite-millennial lite in my mother's (Silent) basement. Which is where I need to stay if I want to have a savings account healthy enough to weather the slings and arrows of our nightmare economy.

Female millennial here, I feel like I never had a really optimistic or carefree time. Going into my teens BAM 9/11, going into college KABOOM 2008. The Z's aren't going to have a better time in life, but I'm not about to start teasing the youths because I feel like I still get it from that side. There's a lot of 'ew 30 year old women' in fandom already, so I know it's coming to the real world. I'm looking forward to flexing all those I-Don't-Give-A-Damn muscles on zoomer teasing that I've packed on from boomer teasing.

As a cusp millennial (basically someone who is only not a gen z by like 1 year), I think it's more a "women in entertainment industry" thing than a generational thing

but also, we've become better at recognizing our biases/what is wrong with some parts of how we treat celebrities. Compare stuff with Brittany Spears now to 10 years ago. I'm not going to bitter against the next generation for treating newer female celebrities a tiny bit better

Oh definitely, I'm right in the middle of Gen X and women in my generation got all that shit too, and so did Boomer women in entertainment and I'm sure Gen Z will too, which is depressing. Is it slightly better for Taylor Swift than it was for, say, Britney or Mariah or Whitney? Sure. Taylor Swift could speak out when someone sexually assaulted her (but even then Kesha was forced to work with a producer who raped her). I hope Gen Z learns that they're not immune to the same bullshit when they all reach their 20s.

I'm a long-time TS fan, but yeah, arguments about gay-coding are pure tinhattery. And that's not some homophobic "my fave can't be gay" bullshit. I'm other-than-straight myself, and I would love if she, against every indication that she is straight as a very straight arrow, turned out to be lgbt in any capacity. But there is no gay coding. There just isn't. Which is to say that nothing in her music is intentionally implying or hinting at queerness. If people want to read queerness into her music, awesome, more power to them. But the tinhatting is exasperating, as it always is.

OT, but Swift's probably the first singer I've ever come across where I really hope I live long enough for her songs to start getting covered by other artists. Because she has written some very good stuff, but her vocals just don't do it justice. However, I admire that woman's business acumen like nobody's business. Especially for someone of her age and gender in the music industry? Damn, what she has done is impressive.

I feel like the whole generational cohort framing is low-key racist in the way that it centers on things like generational wealth, home ownership, and traditional 9-5 labor as markers of success that people should be able to obtain by a certain age. I wish I lived in your world where my biggest problem with the nature of millennial female existence is that I'm not portrayed as cool enough in the media. That teenagers don't give me enough respect (they're never going to do that). I really thought that in 2021, we have finally come to realize the pitfall of the Girl Boss empowerment narrative, but guess not.
