I hate that Doctor Who fans constantly hate on the current showrunner. First it was Moffat, now it's Chibnall. I thought Moffat was the worst show-runner of all time and now y'all miss him?

I don't think Chibnall is a good show runner, but I thought Moffat was worse and certainly don't want him back. I hope this helps alleviate your confusion!

I think that’s been a tradition dating back to Classic Who. I personally don’t have a favorite showrunner and I wouldn’t be able to tell you which one’s better. They’ve all had episodes I’ve liked and episodes I haven’t liked (and everything I don’t like, I just retcon in my mind).

Absolute proof of this: Peter Capaldi being so annoying in the '70s that he got mentioned in some Classic Who behind the scenes stuff (https://twitter.com/Tempus_Fugit0/status/1386766820187705353)

Actual Moffat quote:

“The other day I had to BEG a meeting with [BBC1 controller] Jay Hunt, just so I could explain what we're spending all her money on in Doctor Who. She said it all sounded very nice and sent me off to play.

That's more than creative freedom, that's being turned loose in the wild. Frankly, I'm scared and want someone to tell me what to do. I might even have an epiphany.”

So maybe the problem isn’t the showrunners; it’s the folks who’re supposed to be running the showrunners.

Frankly, that's a bullshit excuse. Writing and producing Doctor Who is the showrunner's job. The executives above the showrunner may well do a bad job at managing the showrunner. But if the showrunner did a shitty job, they did a shitty job.

Personally, I'd rather the showrunners have freedom and get to do what they want. I don't trust the people with the money to know better, and I don't trust the studio to understand the show enough to be able to dictate content. Frankly, it is situations where studio's do dictate content of shows where the show is harmed by that.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-01 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, that's all on Moffat. If you're that unqualified for your job then you shouldn't be doing it.

I have issues with both of them (and also with RTD... and JNT... no showrunner/producer is perfect and there are things that poke out and irk me about every era), but in very different ways. I think Moffat has some sexism he needs to address, was too horny for his own good, and could get a little too obsessed with cool moments and ideas and built massive storylines around them to the detriment of the show. Chibnall, on the other hand, doesn't seem to know how to make individual episodes stand out from each other, thinks he's far more progressive than he actually is which I find annoying, and seems to really like some aspects of Classic Who (Time Lord bullshit, large TARDIS teams) that were already not my cup of tea. So I like the Moffat era more as of now, but mostly because he seems to like the same aspects of DW that I do - and that's fine. Not every era and every part of the show is going to click with me, and I will fully admit that I need to accept that and get over it.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Moffat is complicated to me because I think that, for the most part, I didn't like his era because it just wasn't my taste and that's fine, it was still a good show - except season 6 and to a lesser extent 7, which were just utter unsalvegeable disasters.

As someone who was (mostly) alive during the hiatus and grew up on UK Gold/BBC2 repeats, I remember really hating RTD for dismissing the Time Lords and Gallifrey as something not worth really bothering with way back in 2005 because it's stuffy and convoluted. I felt a bit like, but wait...The Doctor is a REBEL, his background is an important part of that! Why can't we explore that?

I now feel differently after Chibnall in particular (though Moffat isn't 100% innocent in what I'm about to say) for trying to really stamp his mark the entire lore and doing it in such a way that seemed to please absolutely nobody.

I'll also add: I know RTD did eventually bring all that back and is the root cause of the Gallifrey problem in the modern series.

Also, I was a child when I first watched Classic Who so didn't really have the critical analysis skills to realise...Gallifrey is actually kinda boring.

I have an issue with the whole concept of TV showrunners, tbh. Especially with long-running franchises. They always lead to bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
the showrunner as role was never really a thing in british tv until the dr who relaunch, honestly (and dr who nicked the idea from buffy)

Nah I hate both - I don't want Moffat back thanks.

Would be nice to get an actual scifi writer as show runner (especially a POC scifi writer, which would be nice but don't see happening any time soon).

that's the way it goes with any media that undergoes a change since the dawn of time

review of showrunner / producer / remixer / director / actor n+1: "this sucks, i wish we had n back, they were really good / not as bad as this"
n+2: "this sucks, i wish we had n+1 back, they were really good / not as bad as this"

lather, rinse, repeat

I got a sneaking feeling that Doctor Who fans have been bitching about things since around the time Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright left the First Doctor.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC there's a contemporary fan review of The Deadly Assassin (aka the serial that effectively invented most of Gallifrey) bitching about how it ruined the show and changed the canon too much

So, yeah

If not that, definitely when regeneration (although it wasn't called that yet) was introduced! I had a 30 year anniversary book as a kid and remember quoted reviews of Patrick Troughton (in the section about Two) complaining it wasn't the same anymore.

It's entirely possible that the people saying this thought Moffat sucked, but have come to think Chibnall sucks even more.

But I think you're overlooking the fact that while Moffat had his detractors, he also had a lot of fans, and many of the people bemoaning the current state of the show and wishing Moffat would come back are those fans.

What I don't get is how some fans can't understand that their opinions aren't facts and aren't universal opinions shared by everyone. And Doctor Who will always have new showrunners, so just wait a while.

Personally, Davies is my least favorite New Who showrunner. Moffatt is my favorite, though I love Chibnall too. That's my opinion. I'm not arrogant or stupid enough to think they are objectively the best or that my opinion is more important or more truth than anyone else's.

RTD is both my favorite and least favorite. Best writer and plotter of seasons, but doesn't care if he kills characters off and breaks hearts.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-01 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
RTD is fucking garbage. He gave us Rose.

I hate people who don't understand that it's not always the same people complaining. Especially the ones who are nostalgic for Moffat--they weren't Moffat haters to begin with.
