It seems so weird to do a Captain America movie with Sam when they just did a show. Why did they just not make the show into a movie? It would have cut down on some of the unnecessary story lines.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They need content

(Anonymous) 2021-05-11 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't weird. The movie was just greenlit and the development cycle has only just started, so it's not going to actually be out for a couple years.

Wait if they did do a Captain America movie with Sam as Captain America - would you have to watch the tv series in order to understand it, or would it probably be more stand-alone so that anyone can watch it without having to see the tv series?

Personally I'd say you'd probably be ok in that situation. All you need to know is that Sam initially didn't want to accept the mantel (and the shield) but that worked out. However, the issues that faced Sam in his initial reluctance wouldn't go away just because he's embraced being Captain America now. But I have a feeling the films will just go back to skipping over things like that. By virtue of a longer run time overall, the series definitely had more room to get into it a bit more.

Also he and Bucky are much friendlier now but tbh the promo for the series gave that aspect away as inevitable!

I will also say that although I overall enjoyed the show, I was pretty lukewarm towards the two major threats presented (flag smashers and government!Cap) and it was the interactions between the two leads and also Zemo that interested me more. I would advise anyone who isn't super into the MCU to perhaps skip it due to the weakness of the antagonists.

I assume they'd do it as a stand-alone, because Disney may have a lot of subscribers, but it can't have anywhere near the number that would go watch a Captain America movie.

Cap 4 will be written by the same guy who did the show, but that doesn't have to mean anything.

It's speculation, but I feel like the shows are going to be to the movies what the separate franchises were to the Avengers movie. Like, you can totally watch the (first) Avengers movie without having seen Iron Man or Thor or whatnot, but it's more fun and gives more context if you have seen all of those. There will probably be some kind of connection though, since they do want you to watch everything.

We'll know more with the next Dr Strange movie, because Wanda will appear in that one. So we might have an idea how WandaVision affects the movies.

As far as I'm concerned, the series conclusion was exactly the same as the conclusion of Endgame.

Was anyone in any doubt as to who the next Captain America would be after Steve gave Sam the shield?

I really enjoyed The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but on the whole, I feel like it delivered on very little where moving the plot forward is concerned. We left Endgame pretty much sure that Cap had handed the responsibility to Sam along with the shield, with Bucky's approval, and that's how the series concludes. They're just better friends now.

It's just six episodes of gaybaiting and preachiness (ymmv, but I've heard people say that of it) to arrive at the same end.

Any of the other information (such as to do with the Power Broker and Zemo and whoever else) could easily be exposition'd if/when necessary in the relevant movie.

As such, I don't think it's necessary to watch the series if you'd rather not.

From everything that has been said by Marvel Studios, you're going to be able to understand what's going on in the movies if you don't watch the D+ shows. Having seen the shows will probably add nuance/layers (I mean, as far as the MCU does those things, which is not always that far), but anything you actually need to know will be in the movies.

As much as they want to drive subscriptions to D+, they know* that more people will go see a superhero movie than will subscribe to D+ to watch the TV shows, and they don't want to miss out on those more casual viewers' money.

*based, of course, on the Before Times, because nobody can really say what people are going to do as far as movie-going in the next couple of years.

I want both! Because I love Steve and would be thrilled to see more of him, but I think Sam is very cool and the Sam-Bucky partnership makes me so happy.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's kind of the opposite. I don't dislike Steve and I would like to see him again someday, but now that we've had Sam as Cap I finally realized I never really *liked* Steve either. He's a bit bland, maybe? I never really noticed because I like the CA movies and all the secondary characters. It might just be that we've had more time to get to know Sam, compared to Steve.

I do want to see Steve again because I think it could be cool, but I definitely want Sam to have his own CA movie first.

Of course, gotta have the conventionally attractive white man instead of any minority. Especially so he can be shipped with Bucky more. Yaaaaawn.

I remember falling asleep during the first Captain America back when they were on Netflix. That was the moment I knew those boring-ass MCU movies weren't for me.

You are 100 percent correct. Civil War was *not* a Steve/Cap movie. It should have been an Avenger's movie.

It actually shouldn't have been made, but oh well. Stupid movie.
But yeah - *not* a Steve movie.

I like Anthony Mackie as Falcon *and* as Cap, a lot a lot. I dunno if I'd see the movie....probably, especially if Sebastian Stan were in it.

I'm going to be honest and say I don't want another Steve movie, but I really want a better version of Agent Carter but in the alt universe Steve went in Endgame, where he obviously rescued Bucky and alt-Steve, and the five of them, including Jarvis, just shit on Howard until he became a less obnoxious selfish person and they stop the unethical super soldier experiments everywhere, stop the rise of Hydra and help Isaiah and maybe they turn Dottie and she and Peggy kiss because it's a big old poly romance with everyone except Howard who should be alone forever

eta: I think Civil War is more of a Steve movie than people will admit, because it exposes more of his character to challenges, but I would have much preferred the version of this didn't go near Civil War and just looked for Bucky, and I think even if RDJ ~had~ to be in it, I'm mad that they had to make it that fucking mess.

As someone who wouldn't get Disney+ if Disney was paying me for it, bring on the Sam as Cap movies. Steve did his thing and decided to fuck off to the past with Peggy. It's Sam's show now.

I used to dream about a Cap movie about Steve back in WWII with the Howling Commandos. I would LOVE that.

Sure, I wish Civil War had been an actual Cap 3, but it wasn't and now we've got a new Cap. And that's who I want to see in future movies.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-11 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to see Steve in another Cap movie, too. I'll always be a little bitter that CACW was really a stealth Avengers movie instead of a Captain America movie.

I have a less than zero interest in Falcon!Cap at this point, so I'll likely be giving the next movie a pass, or wait until it goes to streaming.

The end of Endgame made me not want any more MCU Steve, ever.

I love Steve Rogers, especially in canons where they didn't just suddenly decide to make him wildly OOC (when children's cartoons get the right answer to "Steve, you can go back and live happily ever after with Peggy: do you do it?" and the MCU does not...) but I will be incredibly happy to see a Captain America movie with Sam!Cap.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-11 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If Steve Rogers comes back to the MCU, it better be as Nomad.

Sam sucks
