While part of the charm in a lot of stories is seeing dysfunctional characters, I personally hate the trope of poor communication skills because, most of the times, it makes the story feel forced as hell. When it is some basic, minuscule fact, that I hate, especially since it is something that would inevitable be revealed and come into conversation anyway.

A lot of the time it's just bad writing

Yes this. I am also constantly going THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU WERE JUST HONEST WITH EACH OTHER AND IF YOU THINK YOU CAN'T BE HONEST ABOUT THIS WHY ARE YOU EVEN ASSOCIATING WITH THIS PERSON.

It's like everyone either distrusts or is afraid of everyone else in a good chunk of fictional media, even the people they're allegedly closest to, and holy crap - get some new friends/partners if that's the case.

Especially when it's characters that should be good adept at communication. Dumb teens acting like that is one thing, successful adults is another.

People complaining about characters' communication skills I can get, because it often is just a shortcut/ cheap plot device. I do feel like even if everyone has amazing communication skills people still can get their wires crossed, because that's just life, but most of the time it really is just lazy writing.

The comments about therapy bother me though. I've been going to a therapist on-and-off for years now, and it is not a magical cure. 'If character A got therapy then he wouldn't have this issue'. Uh, no? If he got therapy, then (hopefully!) he would have the tools needed to be aware of the issue when it comes up, and deal with it. And that will probably still be difficult.

Start watching You're the Worst. There will be plenty of "They need therapy" and one character goes to therapy and so everyone in your group can feel vindicated.

Also it's an amazing show. It is on FXX.

this reminds of the part of the new Sailor Moon movie, where Sailor Moon uses Love Therapy (?) to defeat Queen Nehelenia. My friend and I cracked up!

I'm more okay with bad communication. I've watched how my family talks and you know what? They are terrible with communication in ways that would resolve questions faster if they weren't weird about it. But I'm still on the "get therapy" for characters because I honestly feel like however the movie resolves the conflict won't actually resolve the conflict.

That said there's some like....overly critical commentary from people I think is happening. Like sporking is mainstream, and I think that ruins some watching experiences, imo.

You're hitting on something I've never really been able to adequately express-- this idea that media should be good representation. For anything, really, even just in how to act... like a protag should do the right things and be a good person, in the "correct" way, because people look to media for how to act. If that makes sense.

And I hate that. It totally negates all shades of grey a protag can have, things that make them complicated and interesting. I don't believe we should ever use fiction as a roadmap for our own lives, and it disturbs me to see people moving more and more onto that path.
