Honestly I just thought they made the weirdest choices in adaptation. Cutting a bunch of songs and storylines when the original was near-perfect in my mind was a bad move and made me enjoy the movie much less. There were also some choices made with the choreography and camerawork that was... not as strong as it could have been.

I'm blaming the cinematography on John Chu. I don't like his candy color and digital looking style.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s mainly just black people. They’ll get upset if they’re not in Shang-Chi next.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is generally the kind of opinion that I expect from people who constantly complain about "wokeness". Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
When did people turn on LMM "like a vicious pack of wolves"? Did he get literally devoured alive? Did I miss something?

The reality is that no one on earth is ever going to be totally beyond criticism, and no one on earth ever should be beyond criticism. But I feel like the most reasonable thing to do in general is to judge things on the merit. Even if you disagree with the criticisms of LMM in this case, I don't see how you get from there to concluding that criticizing racism is bad in general, or whatever. I don't see how that's more reasonable.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not literally obviously but yea the woke brigade definitely dogpiled on him.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he basically left Twitter last summer - I forget the exact drama, but it was something with Hamilton instead of In the Heights. He used to be a lot more active and post personal stuff, but it's basically just promo now.

Twitter is a badly designed platform that promotes bad behavior because it results in higher views. So I do not think that we can attribute things like this solely or uniquely to 'wokeness'. And even if we could, I'm just not sure that LMM not posting on Twitter is enough of a harm to justify describing him as being devoured by a pack of wolves or say that we shouldn't care about criticism of this kind at all.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

No, he is being criticized for reasons he himself has even admitted he should be criticized for and plans to work on for future projects. Not every bout of criticism is a "dogpile."

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course he’s going to say that if he hadn’t it would have gotten worse. Look what happened with Rita. You just have to shut up and take it.

Yeah, it's one thing to think that Twitter is made for promoting shit like dog piling and that sucks and its another thing to be like "all criticism of racism, including internalized and not very obvious racism is Too Far." Like, this WAS an issue that existed and a critique that was valid. The nature of the fogpiling on Twitter is something else, but he already left Twitter, so the most he had to do was field questions and reevaluate rather than go through that shitpile himself.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
ikr I really hate this painting lol. Last time I mentioned on here about how it grossed me out when someone posted the balloon version of this painting, they got upsetti about it because ItS jUsT BaLlOoNs - disregarding eating human thing about it.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno if Reubens' version of "Saturn Devouring..." is much better.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
You demanded it be linked for cannibalism and gore. A BALLOON ANIMAL. You were being ridiculous back then.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 04:14 am (UTC)(link)

I don’t mind the painting, but I was bummed that they didn’t take the opportunity to use “The Death of Actaeon” instead. That one has someone actually being attacked by dogs. (And is much less gross than this one.)

(Anonymous) 2021-06-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, you're exaggerating but you're not wrong. Like, these days it's easier to get a pass for not doing anything in terms of representation than for doing something but not doing enough.

People who try are held to higher standards than people who don't try.

I'd still rather people try, but I have no personal investment in this musical or any neighborhoods in NYC so I'm out of the loop on this one.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the musical or the film but I feel what is written applies to life. Someone's always going to turn his or her back on you and be disloyal at some point no matter how long they've known you.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
While think the criticism of The Heights of Hamilton aren't unwarranted, I do think Lin Manuel Miranda is a pretty good example of people holding creators of color to a higher standards than their white peers.

I just don't think ITH is a good example of this. The criticism is that the place he's depicting looks nothing like the actual place in population. Considering the narrative purpose, that's.....a problem. And friends, and seinfeld notoriously got the same criticism, there just wasn't one person for people to point to with that.
