What are your favorite performances by actors you normally don't like?

Jeff Goldblum was good in Life Aquatic and Will Ferrel was funny in Blades of Glory. I normally can't stand them.
Tim Allen was good in Toy Story and Galaxy Quest so apparently he's only funny when he's doing some sort of Bill Shatner imitation.

I was really blown away by Adam Sandler's performance in Uncut Gems, you can tell they asked him to do it cause nobody likes him and he took the role in stride. I respect him as an actor a lot more after having seen it.

I don't dislike Scarlett Johansson, but I think her talent is wasted in plenty of movies she's in. Case in point: She's remarkably charming and fun in Jojo Rabbit, a side of her acting I don't remember seeing anywhere else but in that film.

In response to this particularly, I liked Adam Sandler in Spanglish. It makes me irrationality angry that he could be better than he is.

Scarlett Johansson was good in Ghost World. I really thought her career would have a different trajectory.

Oh geez, watching older films with actors who turned out... not what you expected is quite the letdown. I just wish we could see more actors swapping role types more often, but many studios and producers wouldn't take that risk I guess.

He's really good in Spanglish and i have memories of being surprises by his performance in Reign on Me or what have you. He can be good when he wants to be.

It was really good to see Adam Sandler do a good job in that! Also recommended: Punch Drunk Love.

I despise Matthew McConaughey but really enjoy his role in Frailty.

First film of his I've ever watched, and I was blown away. That's why it never translated to me him IRL.

Jim Carrey in The Truman Show. I think this is a pretty common sentiment, since it's such a different type of movie from his usual brand.

Ooh, yeah, seconding this. Jim Carrey is/was a great physical comedy actor, if you like that kind of thing, but good god it is entirely too much for me. The Truman Show managed to hit that sweet spot where it didn't feel like an reactive attempt to surprise audiences, it just felt like a natural branching off of his abilities.

Try 'The Majestic' - it's a dramatic role, set in the early fifties, and really good. I used to like JC, but his comedic/ physical stuff just seemed to get really over-the-top and kinda rote after a while, so these two more serious roles are really cool to see him in.

Rachael Weisz in Confidence

I usually find her either forgettable or actively annoying, but that was a good role.

Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction.

Edge Of Tomorrow is by no means the best acting Tom Cruise has ever done (despite not liking the guy, I do think he's a good actor), but it's my favorite performance by him because it uses the audience's preconceived concepts of who Tom Cruise is to strengthen our understanding of who the character is at the start, and then meshes that understanding perfectly with Tom Cruise's strong suits as an actor in order to develop the character in a way that feels cohesive and extremely convincing.

Tom Cruise as Lestat in Interview With the Vampire. Otherwise I just can't stand him.

I also can't stand Will Ferrell but the Eurovision movie was fucking brilliant. I feel very much like no one else could have played that role and he had fun with it, and that's great.

Kit Harington as Eret (son of Eret!) in HTTYD2. I also enjoyed his turn in Criminal: UK, so it might be just his portrayal of Jon Snow that I didn't like.

The only thing I've ever liked Tom Cruise in or ever will most likely is Edge of Tomorrow.

Brad Pitt in Snatch.

I didn't hate the 11th Doctor era, but I never quite warmed to Matt Smith as an actor in that, idk why. Something about his physical performance just bugged me. The Crown really changed my opinion of him as an actor, so I'm cautiously optimistic about him in the Game of Thrones prequel thing. Tho I did still laugh when I saw someone say that he was perfectly cast for that show because he "looks like someone who's handsome but still a bit inbred." Like, yikes, but also *snort*.
