109. I approve. I wish I could cook better so I could do something like that...although hey, maybe I could try. I do have the Discworld Cookbook, after all.

111. Which songs would you say are sexist? There are a lot I haven't listened to. I totally get the whole "it doesn't matter if it's ironic, it's still misogyny" thing, and usually I agree, because most people using that defense...weren't really being ironic in the first place and are just covering their asses now. But in some cases--like "The Future Soon"--the irony is obvious from the start. That's just one song, though.

117. I can understand why people would dislike Tohru, because that basic character type has been overused a lot as the archetypal feminine heroine, and while Tohru is well-written she doesn't really subvert the trope...but as I read, I continue to be impressed by how much more consistently developed and believable she is than most characters of that type.

128. I normally ship Yzak/anyone I think he'd have angry bitchfights with, but I never quite got into Kira/Yzak, because...Yzak barely ever met Kira. He just fought him from a distance. I'd have loved to see them develop that more, because the contrast between the big badass rival picture Yzak probably had of Kira, and the sweet, sincere guy he actually was, would have been hilarious.

149. That's okay. They're fantasies.

151. Maybe it's not close-minded, but it is kind of deluded, considering that studies consistently show that marijuana has no worse effects than alcohol.

Unless you mean that you think less of people when they admit to regular heavy drug use, which is a no brainer, and you shouldn't have to keep that a secret.

111. IIRC, Skullcrusher Mountain and The Future Soon were both mentioned. I can't recall which others the OP had a problem with.

See, those just struck me as so incredibly obviously a mockery of the whole sexist-geek-fantasy genre that I can't take them as misogynist. Of the songs I've heard, the one I could make an argument for misogyny in is "Someone Is Crazy," which is a very gendered song about a nasty, unstable personality.

[identity profile] milo1047.livejournal.com 2009-02-13 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought too. Oh, Just as Long as Me was mentioned as well, I think. They're coming back to me as I think about it. xD

(Anonymous) 2009-02-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This. But even ignoring that, I don't understand someone hearing any lyrics as being the voice of the author. Musicians don't always write from their own point of view.

Maybe I don't see Skullcrusher Mountain as sexist because I first heard it in a slash fanvid.

Because alcohol has no ill effects whatsoever. The only difference is one's legal, and even then not in every situation.

And I don't think it's deluded. Society fucks up big time with marijuana, almost like it's a bipolar opinion swing. Yeah, it's hilarious in shitty stoner movies but god forbid Michael Phelps uses it at a party, then "OMG it's illegal!"

Uh, I never said that alcohol has no ill effects whatsoever, but the original secret mentioned nothing about it. I actually think alcohol is worse than pot.

You don't think it's deluded to immediately think less of someone when they admit to occasional marijuana use, but apparently not if they admit to having the occasional social drink?

I also do not like alcohol and do not like being around people who drink to get drunk. I'm not sure why it is that as we grow up and mature that alcohol becomes our drink of choice, when most people who drink aren't very mature at all. I don't mind when people drink in moderation, as in, one cocktail or two beers. But drinking to get drunk is just stupid. As is smoking pot, however with pot, I do not tolerate that in any amount. If you're a casual smoker, yes, I still judge you. If you're a heavy user, I judge you even more and will probably stop talking to you and let the friendship grow distant.

But my secret was about pot, not alcohol. :)

I FULLY ENDORSE THIS LINE OF THINKING.

The Town Crotch (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/The%20Town%20Crotch)

Baby Got Back (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/Baby%20Got%20Back)
First of May (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/First%20of%20May)

I did have Someone Is Crazy (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/Someone%20is%20Crazy) on my list (I've taken it off and put it back on and then taken it off again) but I guess it's too specific of a vendetta against one particular woman to be compelling as a sexist argument against all.

I don't think any individual one would be that bad (except maybe The Town Crotch), but when you put them all together there's just this thread of contempt for women running through them that really makes me uncomfortable. And yes, he has tons of songs so that the total percentage of offensive-to-neutral is not that bad, but still.

Re: Future Soon, I get that it's like, how can you take it seriously at all given the subject matter? To me there's still the attempt at emotional truth behind the sci-fi that says he thinks women are stupid, even the ones he claims to be in love with. He said when I saw him recently that this song is based on an experience he had in 4th grade and details his 4th grade revenge fantasy. So maybe it's not fair to judge it in an adult context.

I'd forgotten about "The Town Crotch." :/

But a lot of those...I feel like it's really obvious that the songs are supposed to be poking fun at or even outright mocking the singer. "The Future Soon" is the most obvious to me--dumb, self-entitled nerd gets rejected by a girl and, rather than just accept it, comes up with a ridiculous fantasy about how he'll make her his with mad science.

I admit I don't see even ironic misogyny in "First of May," though. There's only brief references to women at all, and references to men as well; it's about sex rather than a sex.

And I haven't listened to "Make You Cry," and the lyrics are creepy as fuck, but his comment on it is, "It’s another love song from a crazy person - this guy wants to win the girl so he can punish her for not loving him. I guess. He certainly seems confused and angry and sad. Do NOT hang out with him."

So while there are some questionable ideas about women cropping up in his songs now and then, "misogynist" seems like far too strong and inaccurate a word..."possessor of unexamined male privilege" fits better.
