Got my nails done, hot pink leopard! And the lady at the donut shop gave me a free blueberry crumb donut, which was very nice of her. Right now I'm listening to my 90s playlist (Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah).

Meetings, meetings, meetings. Then got off work and took a dozing nap for like 30 minutes.

Woke up way too early and got to start the work week by discovering after I was out of hours for last week I missed a support ticket for something that had to be up by Saturday morning or we might get fined by the state, oooooops. Fortunately someone else apparently did realize I was out of work hours and got it done, so I didn't have to panic.

Bookended my work day with a ticket for an issue that payroll was having where they couldn't approve time sheets. Which needed to be approved by... 20 minutes after they submitted the ticket. And everyone who works on that particular system was already off for the day or out sick. ;_;

But in between such ridiculousness and some nice calm ordinary tickets, I got what I already had written of the current fic the way I wanted it, and replied to someone (who I don't think is someone I actually know personally!) that commented on some of my stuff over the last couple days. In spite of being physically miserable and so dehydrated I can hardly walk straight, feedback on my dead-fandom fics makes me really happy. :D

I bought some Italian wine. And pizza. And celebrated England losing. Suck it, England.

Not much. Watched TV, messed around with my computer, wondered why a bunch of my friends have not returned my messages despite the fact that covid restrictions on going out have noticeably loosened up.

Got a brief done at work plus went over a bunch of stuff with one of the two immigration paralegals at the firm. The other one is on vacation until tomorrow. Now I'm home, with a migraine, laying in bed reading The Unofficial Guide to the Universe of Babylon 5 because I'm not up for watching anything.

Going to have to take my computer to the apple store next weekend. The trackpad is now unusable because it is constantly clicking whenever I touch it. This is the other reason i'm reading rather than watching something. i basically can barely use the laptop. writing this comment took several minutes as the trackpad keeps moving where clicker is.

Literally have spent all of today lying around doing nothing. Last moment of peace this year.

Tripped on the steps with my wet shoes, knocked my face on the railing and spent a couple of hours with an ice pack trying to avoid getting a black eye out of the deal. Yay, Monday.

Played Pokemon Gold online (emulator on mobile, no saving, so my 1.30 --4.30 am playtime didn't count) and then went work. Tired AF. Want to sleep soon.

Went to work, unpacked and processed boxes (and boxes and boxes) of books. Had already asked for tomorrow off to use up leave time, but now I'm afraid I might spend the day face down on the couch whimpering because ow ow.

We didn't even get them all done but the guys who called out or were off today can do the leftovers; we might get one or two boxes tomorrow, or none.

Wondered where the heck my period could be, as I'm 4 days late and I am never late, I'm usually early or on time. And I definitely am not pregnant, but am wondering if perimenopause is beginning.

My workplace has too much air conditioning, so I'm making myself a cotton wrap in multicolored yarn.

What are your favorite "trash" foods?

I love fried spam, which in the US is generally considered cheap, gross food.

Cafeteria-grade pizza. The doughy type, not the dried-out type. IT'S DELICIOUS.

Melancholy thoughts thread.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I was trying to come up with gift ideas for a friend today and it brought back some old childhood memories that I'd kind of forgotten about and I wanted to tell someone, but I don't have anyone I feel comfortable sharing this with so here goes? My family didn't have a lot of money when I was little, but circumstances improved as I got older. We were never desperately poor, we didn't go without meals or anything like that. We just didn't get many new clothes or toys, we stuck to cheap/free activities like going to the park, stuff like that.

I mostly never noticed as a kid, but as I got older I did feel a little bit ashamed about how I never had the latest [whatever] because my mother refused to spend money on it. She grew up poor herself, and even when we were financially comfortable, she still had that mindset where she refused to spend money on anything she deemed frivolous... which was most things, really. I didn't love that, but I was resigned to it. I didn't complain about wearing peoples' hand-me-downs and I (mostly) didn't complain about not wearing "cool" clothes or whatever.

But one area where I really, really hated her tendency to pinch pennies was Secret Santa gift exchanges in school. I don't remember if we had the choice to opt out, but even if we did, that would've been weird and the other kids would've noticed so it didn't really occur to me to get out of it. Besides, I loved surprise presents! But I kind of dreaded it because I knew that:

1) I didn't have any money, nor would she give me any for this purpose because it was frivolous
2) I wasn't allowed ANY input into what I gave my Secret Santa. All my ideas (where I tried to pick something they'd like) were scoffed at and dismissed, because even without the frugality, my mother was the type of person who gave practical presents, stuff that she thought you should use.
3) I'd always end up having to give my Secret Santa something not-fun and lame, and I'd be embarrassed as hell
4) My mother didn't believe me that this would happen, or she didn't care, I don't know which.

Now, my suggestions weren't extravagant and they were well within my family's budget: small stuffed animal, candy, some cute costume jewelry, a cool pen, etc. But they were all shot down because they weren't practical, candy's unhealthy, jewelry is junk, regular pens are cheaper than cool pens that write in glittery, colored ink, etc. etc. My mother absolutely refused to believe that a ten year old would not want a random Christmas tree ornament she got on sale last year, or a small toiletries bag that she got for free when she bought make up for herself. I hated giving that to people and watching them struggle to be polite while being really, really disappointed, but there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.

I don't have kid and don't plan on having any, but if I ever do I swear to god I'll never do this to my kid. I won't spoil my kids, but I'm not going to try to teach them a lesson about giving crappy presents so you can save a buck. I'm not going to dismiss their ideas as stupid the way my mother did.

I'm sorry, this bothered me more than I realized...

Black Widow reactions

(Anonymous) 2021-07-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Question for people who saw it or have been discussing it. Hope this isn't too late in the day for most of you. I've noticed a massive apathetic response to this movie, which is really disappointing. I honestly loved it. I thought it was a different take on the Marvel films. Am I alone in thinking this? Yeah I get that Marvel/comic book movie fatigue is a thing, but come on.
