Probably because no one dresses like Ancient Egyptians anymore.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-20 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lot less clear-cut than a white woman doing it when white people basically looted the graves of ancient Egyptians for decades.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-20 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I may be misremembering but I don't remember Katy Perry getting flack for it either. I think even given colonialism, most people don't care about Ancient Egyptian dress because that was 2000 yrs ago.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
As did brown people for centuries before that. Why is Tut's tomb so famous? Because not robbed in antiquity.

Blacks think they were the real Ancient Egyptians or something

(Anonymous) 2021-07-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I've certainly seen Americans try and argue that all Africa is black. Regardless of skin color, Americans are just about dumb about the rest of the world that way.

The Nubians certainly were, and there was a Nubian dynasty ruling as pharaohs for a while, to say nothing of the fact that next door neighboring countries tend to have a certain amount of cross-immigration and intermarriage along the borders. The primary ethnic group in ancient Egypt may not have been as generally dark as sub-saharan African ethnic groups often are, but they were certainly no kind of "white" as one considers a European to be.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Are you the anon who implied that they last two live action films set in ancient Egypt were racially correct(despite being full of white American/European actors), and that the people mad about the casting were dumb for thinking otherwise? It would track with your blatant racism, honestly.

When an ancient culture is so far removed from the modern one, nobody really gives a shit. The reason why people care in other cases is that those cultures and practices have been kept alive over the centuries, it's not ancient history, it's still modern life. To an extent as obviously some traditions fall by the way-side as opinions change, but things like traditional clothes being brought forwards through time and certain cultural aspects means that disrespecting it is disrespecting current living people. There are no Ancient Egyptians to disrespect, they're all dead, as a result that aesthetic is somewhat of a free-for-all because it exists in this odd abstract place of having happened but not being culturally relevant anymore.

it's not cultural appropriation if the current Egyptian culture is so far removed from the ancient culture. cultural appropriation only works if it's a current culture (i.e native american or romanian/g*psy culture)

I think it being a Michael Jackson homage is more problematic, no?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He IS being called out for it. Almost every tweet responding to him posting the video was people yelling cultural appropriation.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
...a lot of ancient egyptians were black?? WTF are you on? This has to be a troll

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
This secret clocks as trolling for me.

the ancient cultures we imagine the most about (Scandinavian, Greek/Roman, Egyptian) existed in a historical space where appropriation by other peoples was in fact forced assimilation because they were empires, and when pulled through history are an underscoring of their culture power globally. you'd have significantly more of a point if this was mayan or aztec culture, since they were actively destroyed by contemporary imperial cultures and therefore do not exist as a source of hegemonic symbolism in modernity. Egypt specifically works in the West as a symbolic denial of racist cultural forces that exist now. So no, this would not be the cultural appropriation discourse you were looking for.

all this to say that even as a troll secret you don't know enough about either cultural appropriation or history to make this work.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
i didn't know Egyptians still dressed this way!

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 03:10 am (UTC)(link)

People really look for any excuse to be triggered to try and cancel someone they don't like huh. Aren't people tired of gatekeeping every damn thing on the planet and segregating what you can/can't wear or eat by whatever race you are born as?

It's one thing if there is some cultural tradition where certain items or clothing are unique and sacred, but a whole ass style of some ancient cultures clothing is offensive? Does this mean humans 100 years from now can't wear yoga pants? lmao fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-21 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's stupid example because there were the Nubian dynasties - the whole "Ancient Egypt has not existed for a long time" I only half accept as an argument because there are plenty of complaints about Cleopatra getting cast too white.
Now if this was about Rihanna and that Princess of China thing that very few people cared about, for example...
