$20/book is about market price for most novels, so...fail to see how that's such a sin tbh (though I agree the translation needs to be brushed up)

Also, why is keeping the honorifics an issue? I much prefer that to poor English equivalents like "childe".

Yeah... the whole "honorifics yes or no" is a major debate even in professional translator circles and I understand arguments both for and against it.

I understand both arguments, but when honorifics and the usage thereof tell you very important things about the characters and their relationships, better to keep them so not so much is lost.

Also I have played WAY too much Vampire: The Masquerade to ever see “childe” as anything but referring to vampires. Which was NOT her intent, I’m sure.

As a translator, I agree. It's one thing if you're translating something set in a generic fantasy world where you can likely find English-language equivalents to the honorifics being used in that situation. It's another thing entirely when you're translating something set in an Asian (or pseudo-Asian) setting where the honorifics are actually a crucial part of the character relationships and tell you a great deal about them.

Yep. If the honorific/name addition (like gege or Shizun, in TGCF and Scum Villain respectively) is as much nickname/endearment as it is honorific, it should definitely stay. And if those stay, you can't just drop the others.

$20 is market price for novels where you are?! Are we talking regular novels (paperbacks) or niche things like light novels/manga where the price is often higher because the number sold is often less?

Not paperbacks, no, and those generally aren't first releases, but hardcovers and more specialty stuff like graphic novels, yeah.

Most of the light novels released by the same company are around $13-14 and are considerably thinner than these, the price seems fair to me. These aren't intended to be cheapy trade paperbacks.

It's a perfectly reasonable price when you consider that the companies have to pay people to translate the novels and then have other people edit them, it's not like they can just license and publish them.

Novels are about $30-40 paperback where I am, and $30 in my currency is just over $20 US. After a while you'll get much cheaper knock-off versions of popular books, but if the book isn't that popular you're out of luck unless you see it in a sale bin.
