I've seen this opinion multiple times on Twitter and it confuses me. Are you wanting 'horror' or are you wanting 'spooky aesthetics', Victorian period dramas or mystery-themed theater for example? It's a tad bizarre to complain about existentialist-based horror, what with it having been around forever and being a major cornerstone of both the horror genre and the human psyche in general. Gore isn't a recent trend either; it comes and goes in varying levels of viscera and popularity but yeah, it certainly isn't a new or modern feature in either cinema, art, or culture. Both existentialism and gore relate to the nightmare of death - the defining element of horror.

Psychological and/or supernatural thrillers might yield what you're looking for instead but both of those genres also often dabble heavily in matters relating to the physical or metaphysical fear of death. If not those genres, perhaps it's best to ignore recent film trends altogether and watch older cinema, especially from around the world and from different cultures.

I don't mind psychological horror and gore has its place for me (vampire or zombie horror for example, though I am not a fan of 'torture porn horror'), but I am a bigger fan of ghosts and things that actually go bump in the night and not the "it was all in their head" stuff.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think they're both kind of torturous honestly.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this has been my feeling about horror in recent years - especially with gore. There never seems to be anything like an atmosphere of horror with more subtle themes because there's this idea that horror must = scare the shit out of your audience. Don't even get me started on the obsession with jump scares.

Been there, *high five*.

To be frank, this doesn't sound super mature. More mature than flouncing or sticking around and being a dick but holding onto a grudge and giggling about the decline of the community is a little immature.

The same thing happened to me. I take great delight in how several outlets have shriveled up.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I would kill for a good Dark Visions or Forbidden Game TV/movie adaptation. I love those ones.

I could never get through the whole Nightworld series but my favorite is Dark Angel, which feels like a secret in itself. Everyone hates that one, mostly because it feels so tangential to the rest of the series. Maybe that's why I like it?

Well, also I'm a sucker for a makeover story.

I am sick and tired of gore porn and torture porn. Throwing blood and guts at the screen doesn't necessarily make for a decent movie. While I don't mind some blood and gore, add a good solid story to it as well. Existential dread can be good if done right, but again, like found footage, it's being done to death. Lately, I have been going through my old movie library and searching youtube for older horror movies. I have found some great ones that I had forgotten about, like Deadline, The People Across The Lake, and The Hearse. It's light relief from all the ultra-violent horrors being made now.
