you're an utterly tiresome troll, op

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh?

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I only read MDZS but... it's the same translation, just in book form? Nope, I'm not paying for that.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think they're cleaning it up and probably have an actual editor look over it? It's the same people doing the translation, tho yes.

I'm mostly grateful because with actual paper books I can actually quickly turn back pages. I swear my brain turns into a sieve every time I try reading e-books. I finish something and have forgotten half of it an hour later. It's weird.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean... it's nice if they have an actual editor look at it, and I appreciate that it was a labor of love. But I'm not paying $20 for that level of quality.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the several groups doing the translations, you mean. I think there have been at least 3 different groups trying their hands at it so far.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
it's not the Exiled Rebels translation-- it's a completely new group of people, no relation to ExR at all. I don't know their other work, but it's GOT to be an improvement over that.

>$20 per volume
lol what those prices are embarrassing

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
$20/book is about market price for most novels, so...fail to see how that's such a sin tbh (though I agree the translation needs to be brushed up)

Also, why is keeping the honorifics an issue? I much prefer that to poor English equivalents like "childe".

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... the whole "honorifics yes or no" is a major debate even in professional translator circles and I understand arguments both for and against it.

$20 is market price for novels where you are?! Are we talking regular novels (paperbacks) or niche things like light novels/manga where the price is often higher because the number sold is often less?

MDZS is also getting an official TL in my country and while I'm happy for the author (if she can enjoy this at all, considering nobody knows where she is) I'm probably not going to buy them. Mainly because translations for these kinds of novels (BL, webnovels/lightnovels, from Asia) tend to still be pretty half assed and what I've seen so far in terms of translations for certain key terms (like for example for "cultivator" is majorly awkward and clunky at best.
I prefer figuring out how to buy the originals and then read free fan TLs.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-09 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
20$ sounded a bit much but then I turned it into € and... that seems like a normal price for a novel - especially when there are illustrations and stuff? (They cost even slightly less than that on my country's Amazon page)

Like, I agree that the translations need to be brushed up and all that stuff, but I assume that's something that will happen and I simply hope they're going to be good cause I just prefer reading long books in paper format. If they're not, I can still drop them.

I also don't really understand why fans are being called dumb for wanting to officially pay for something they can actually hold in their hands and read? Sure, they could jump through some hoops and get the Chinese originals but... if they can't read them and don't want them just as some collector's items why is that so bad?

I just hope that this leads to more novels getting translations I can buy.

(I do also wish they wouldn't split those stories into quite as many volumes but it is what it is.)

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I am but a poor long-suffering SVSSS fan, and if paying $20 (less, if you preordered through Amazon because it's already gone on sale once) per volume is what it takes to show there is interest in the show and get us a live-action, I will do it.

Besides, fan translations don't turn into money for MXTX, and I am interested in supporting her, the fan translators, and the artists who were commissioned.

Also, people in fandom as a broad whole have spent a whole lot more on a whole lot less, so while I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to shell out this $$, this secret is a weird superiority flex.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I wish TGCF was split into a few less volumes but really, MDZS and SVSS should only be two volumes? General google search suggests 100k words is about 300 pages. So we're talking about 600-700 pages per book, which means it would need to be bound differently or else the spine will crack and show wear more easily, and you're probably using cheaper paper. Plus they won't fit well on the store shelves with the manga, where I assume most of these will be sold, and people who are unsure about trying them out will balk way more easily at buying a 600 page book. I would rather have the books split up and pay more but get a better quality release that has a better chance of actually selling to a wider audience, thanks.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
You do realise that vol 1 of TGFC is over 540 pages long? We have to be able to at least hold these things to read them? People really are underestimating just how long these novels are in Chinese let alone when they're translated into English.

Seems like the fans are going to be getting easy-to-access versions of books they know they like, so I'm not understanding the supposed embarrassment or laughable part of this. The fans that want them will be happy and anyone that doesn't want to buy them won't. Seems perfectly fine to me.

But then perhaps I lack the same smug contempt for those who enjoy something I don't care for that you clearly possess OP, and thus am unable to parse why fans spending their own money how they wish is something to mock as if they've done something wrong.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If I like something, I want to be able to support it by buying it legally. I have no ethical objections to fan translations of stuff that doesn't have licensed releases (I'm a fan translator myself), but it's always preferable to be able to have stuff in a format where consuming it will actually give back to the creator.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for reminding me to make that order, OP. You're a pal.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Whereas I hope these sell well because I'd like to think this means other authors from China could get official books sold over here down the line too. I'd love to own the books that Guardian and Word of Honor were based on, because finding full fan translations of either is really fucking hard. You bet your ass I'd drop $20 on either of those if they ever got official English books.

Please tell me you're not an American who thinks everything has to be so cheap because if you aren't making out like a bandit then you think it's expensive.

Though to be honest I've been expecting some troll fans from 'other' series or authors to take the news badly. I've never understood how trying to ruin the fun of others is supposed to give your favorite a better chance.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
aren't those 'word counts' Chinese characters, not English words - so even if you say one Chinese character is 4 characters in English, the maths is a bit off.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-10 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
SVSSS is going to have around 400 pages per volume, MDZS 500, TGCF 550, which is perfectly reasonable for paperbacks that size. Any bigger and they get uncomfortable to hold for long. I'm guessing you don't read much.

Thanks for reminding me to preorder!
