Not ace, but I'm also exclusively into genfic. It's definitely been an exhausting, isolating, and depressing experience in pretty much every fandom I've been a part of.

That said, still agree with this secret 100%. Being the 'weird kid' in fandom circles is not the same as being oppressed, and I really wish people would stop conflating fannish preferences with IRL sexuality- or gender-related persecution.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. Not shipping things that everyone ships could be isolating.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ace and I'm a major shipper. I also read smut (I just don't want it to involve ME). I'm always confused when my fellow aces act like I don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Not having sex but getting off on smut is called celibacy not asexuality.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Celibacy implies you have sexual attraction to people that you aren't acting on i.e. you are attracted to people but are choosing to not have sex with them for whatever reason. Asexual people aren't attracted to other people at all. Being turned on by the idea of two characters having sex, or being able to vicariously relate to them, doesn't mean you want to have sex with them or are attracted to them yourself.

By your logic, you're going to claim lesbians who like BL or gay porn are secretly straight and into men. Which they're not. What they like to watch =/= what they'd want to do in real life.

You're an idiot who knows nothing about asexuality. But go on, explain to me how I'm supposed to feel about sex.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That is not what celibacy means.

Hi, fellow ace who loves shipping!

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I read and enjoy it because characters can achieve levels of attraction and desire and fulfillment with each other that I am incapable of feeling in real life toward other people because I'm not attracted to people in that way.

Just leave me in peace to indulge in vicariously enjoying my ship's emotions and desire for each other that I have never once felt toward anyone IRL, and not for lack of trying. I'm no virgin. Sex is boring. People just ain't attractive to me. And I'm not attracted to either of the characters in the ships either. I wish I could find people attractive like everyone else, but I just can't. It's like asking me to be turned on at a fork.

If Fork has some desperate unrequited longing for Spoon though, gimme that shit. Now kiss

Maybe its because I don't communicate much in fandom these days, but I have been absolutely unaware of the idea that asexuals aren't into shipping and/or read smut. Then again there's this stubborn belief that fanfiction = porn (which is funny to me, like the time I sent in a secret about writing Furby fanfiction and so many people assumed the worst as furby smut), and apparently every asexual ever is supposed to be disgusted by the mere mention of doing the do.

Big same, friend. I'm asexual but not aromantic, and I enjoy all the fun relationship dynamics of shippy fanfic. The sex is ... eh, fine. Sometimes I enjoy it. More often, I skim it.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-29 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
*raises hand* Another ace who is also a hardcore shipper and avid smut reader. We're actually really common in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure when fandom became primarily about shipping, but I never got massively into that side of things (not asexual, and happy to ship, but that's not the main focus). My original fandoms were all about the gen fics with only a small amount of shipping, and very little porn. I miss the wide-ranging discussions more than anything else, nothing to do with being asexual or otherwise.

A lot of so-called asexuals "come out" so they can bemoan how oppressed they are so...

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all that corrective rape and society's pressures to be in a relationship because 'That's what everybody does' sure is a load of nothing. Must be hard for you to hear about it all the time my dude :(

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is NOT what OP is saying, and stop being acephobic.

Biphobia and acephobia have a lot of similarities, including the "you aren't as oppressed" flavor (mentioning because some acephobes do see bisexuality as valid).

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of those situations where people are unnecessarily rude (not you, OP), and people get rude back. Rinse and repeat, with added ill-feeling.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I... give a translated example?

Suppose I say: "I like X guyslash ship, it's just lovely."

Some fan: "Clearly you hate women."

Me: "What? No. I just said I liked a ship. What the fuck?"

That fan: "Oh, you're so sensitive. Why the pity party? You just love making yourself sound *oppressed* and *persecuted*."

Me: "What the fuck!?"

Do you... ah... see how that can rile a person up after a while? Does this example help?

It's not every shipper that's like that - far from it - but they sure do make a person cranky.

And here I thought asexuals were oppressed because of all the corrective rape.

You mean something that lesbians *actually* go through? No one cares if you're "asexual."

Thanks for being my daily reminder that people being rancid is a thing.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-29 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as an asexual, this comment is not as helpful as you think it is.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I have not seen frozen comments in a long time. I can understand why this secret might generate wank, but damn not that much wank.

(Anonymous) 2021-08-30 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There are times when I can't find the fic I want, or when characters/elements don't get the attention in fandom that I wish they did and it's a real bummer.

But not getting the amount of free content in exactly the form I desire it is preeeeeetty far from being oppressed.
