103: Yeah, he was with the Avatar. It's not like she left her brother out on a ledge to feed to some hydra. She was under Azula's thumb. Saying no would have gotten everybody into trouble and honestly, even though Aang was their enemy, I'm sure she knew her brother was safe. She does give a sideways glare to Azula also. She didn't really want to 'sacrifice' her brother, she just had no choice. I really wonder what people would have done in her situation.

150: *sigh* Yes, all slash is OOC. :| IC slash does not exist and there is never any subtext in canon in anything. Yep. You're totally right.

161: I still don't see the appeal of Troyella. :/

103) Clearly they would have pointlessly sacrificed themselves! FOR BROTHERHOOD! AND JUSTICE!!!!!!!

;3

[identity profile] lalachoy.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that you mention it, that IS what she should have done! Heck, she should have heroically killed herself too! So that way she didn't end up with Zuko she showed how courageous she really was! Damn. I bet that would have gotten her more fans and everything. :( And I really need a Mai icon.

Re: 103, 150, 161

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She does this later on, you know. But I guess it's easier to sacrifice oneself for an ex-boyfriend than for a baby brother? Doing it for a love interest is what we should expect from every good girl but doing it for a baby brother is too much to ask from anyone?

Re: 103, 150, 161

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly she made the decision to go down without having Azula be right there.

Look no one is claiming that Mai is all that heroic, but both those decisions came under vastly different circumstances, and unlike Zuko, her baby brother was not about to fall to a very certain death.

Re: 103, 150, 161

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So they should've just skipped the entire character arc that brought her to the place where she could stand up against Azula?

One of my favorite things about Avatar is how every character has a journey and many, MANY of them have to learn to be better people. Zuko was threatening old ladies and burning down villages at the beginning of the show -- does that mean everyone should hate him, too? Clearly they don't! But somehow Mai's failure to nobly sacrifice herself in the FIRST EPISODE SHE APPEARS IN is too much for some people to get past?

Don't you know, characters never grow and change. They stay the same forever and ever.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you heard of this thing called character growth?

Re: 103, 150, 161

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You think it's funny that people would sacrifice themselves for family?

Fail.

Re: 103, 150, 161

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is funny, that people are expected to do it automatically, even if the situation might not warrant that kind of sacrifice. Yes she didn't know them that well but defying Azula could have brought on just as much trouble and still have hurt her brother in the long run. And from the looks of that scene, she didn't have a reason to think that her brother was in immediate danger.

Seriously? Wow.

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahha uhm. I think I'm being sarcastic about people in fandom who think that the only way you can be a "good guy" is by throwing yourself in front of a bus?

I also think eating kittens is funny, just so we're clear.

Re: Seriously? Wow.

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. It came off as though you were mocking people who saw family/justice/etc. as worthy of sacrifice in general.

Re: 103, 150, 161

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
She definitely wasn't malicious in her intent, and it might not have been those most moral decision, but it was a practical one.

But somehow because she wasn't all heroic and betraying of Azula from the very beginning, she is past point of redemption.

[identity profile] lalachoy.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about you, but I'm constantly acting heroic and saving people. I leap out in front of cars and everything if there's going to be an accident!

Re: 103

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
To that first comment: That's not an excuse. Mai didn't know he was with the Avatar, or that the Avatar was even someone to be trusted. All she knew was that her brother was held by three "rebels," three enemies, allied with the people her family and country had been suppressing for many years. She had absolutely no way of knowing her brother was safe; if anything, the fact that it was three rebel sympathizers holding him hostage should have made her that much more afraid for his life.

And I really don't know about that "sideways glare"--her eyes have always been thinner/more angled than other characters, so I thought it was just a regular glance.

Re: 103

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're missing the point entirely.

Re: 103

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't meant to be a comment on Mai, just on the points she made in her defense of Mai. So you can put away your angry icon now.

Re: 103

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming you're right about Mai's perspective (which I have some reservations about but whatever) I ask again: what was she supposed to have done, exactly?

As I said elsewhere, this is the FIRST EPISODE she ever appeared in, when she had only just reconnected with Azula and hadn't gone through all the experiences and learned the lessons that would eventually bring her to the place where she could openly defy her princess. And if she HAD hurled her body between Azula and Tom Tom, not only would that have been a completely pointless sacrifice on her part, it would also have...you know. Skipped her entire character arc.

Re: 103

[identity profile] madamemystical.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Since her little brother was involved, I do think she should have done something 'reckless' or whatever, cause honestly in those situations you can't just do nothing.

But I understand your second point and I agree with the character arc thing hands down. In this case it seems more like the writer's fault, in that they choose the wrong situation to show how subservient Mai starts out towards Azula. Putting the little brother in the mix made it more controversial than it had to be.

Re: 103

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't call it a writer's fault, actually, since it seemed like the idea was not only showing Mai as listening to Azula, but as not caring about anything because she feels powerless to change anything. Futile gestures are completely incomprehensible to Mai when she starts out. Which is probably why she's at the same time attracted to the guy who got doomed to a life that's one big futile gesture and committed to it just for the honor. It's not that she just falls in love with Zuko so will put herself in danger for him--she fights throughout the show, after all. It's that Zuko gives her enough hope to see that sometimes a futile gesture is worth it.

Hm. I'm sure I recalled them knowing it was the Avatar who was involved but maybe I was mistaken. But even then, her brother was never really threatened and she didn't have any reason to think her brother would be killed. In my opinion, I still think Mai chose what she thought was safest.

Even considering that, anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that if you kill or damage your hostage you lose your leverage.
