in classic GenX fashion I'm skeptical of anyone younger than me claiming to be nostalgic for the 80s. or, well, I guess there's a few years of wiggle room there, so anyone under 40. I've been leaning hard into nostalgia due to the pandemic dragging my midlife crisis out into an entire decade of self-loathing and there's definitely good things, the music and movies yes, but I think there's something about what people think is an 80s aesthetic that actually never was. it was never wall-to-wall synthwave and Miami Vice neon and trapper keepers, that was merely a subset of various subgenres around 85 and whole segments of culture were nothing like that.

okay except the trapper keepers. those were universal.

Yeah, this, hard.

I was born in the 80's (I'm 35), but I'm a 90's kid, because I don't remember the 80's at all. I don't know how somebody can get nostalgic for something they didn't live through..?

The music, sure. There're kids these days who listen to their parents music, and their parents are my age, so they could have memories attached to that stuff, same with films, but the fashion and actual era? No. They're not nostalgic for the 90s, they're nostalgic for their childhoods and music and movies bleed over eras.

As a 37 year old, my early memories are of the 80s but I came up in the 90s. I feel like the 80s aesthetic is very appealing and pseudo nostalgic but I have a very proprietary feeling about gen z appropriating 90s shit, like "Get your own stuff. Leave this alone. You don't even understand it."

I had a Trapper Keeper in 6th grade! It had daisies and a bunny on it. Trapper Keepers definitely pre-date the 80's.

I’m younger than 40 and had several much older siblings so the 80s lasted a long time in my house. I have a lot of nostalgia for the music and the movies.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK. The 80s-nostalgia aesthetic is definitely ahistorical but it's a really great aesthetic so I feel like I can't complain about it too much.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah and different varieties are good, like the cyberpunk 80s look, or the darker grungier almost 70s look.

I was born in the mid-80's, so I have no real memory of it.

I get nostalgic for the 90's though. Not because I want to go back, but because certain things (songs, theme tunes, fashion, being reminded of weird fads, foods, tv shows, etc) make me remember that time.

The fun thing is, nostalgia doesn't only hit you with stuff you liked. I get nostalgic for that period (my late childhood) when I hear songs I DIDN'T like, but have memories attached to.

Nostalgia isn't being wistful about something you necessarily like. It's just something that gives you a Feeling and takes you back to times gone.

I can see why people might get nostalgic for the 80s, even if it was a shit time.

There was a sort of sweet take on this in The Cleaner (the episode is “The Influencer”).

A 50ish guy trying to kindly explain to a Gen Z kid that yes, there was some great stuff in the 80s, but also some terrible stuff. Pretty much like today.

Late 70s kid here. I'm with you on the 90s nostalgia. Mostly it's about the music, like all the eurodance, but mid- to late 90s was my upper secondary education and my first job after graduating and all the clubbing I did with friends while our town still had a nightlife.

a lot of the music was godawful.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a teenager in the 80s so I do feel nostalgic for it.

Millennials in the comments: "I'm 35 and I don't remember it!"

Uh, okay?

I don't get nostalgia for 70s fashion and most of the music, personally. Most of the clothes were shitty, thick, sweaty polyester, not funky stuff and Gunne Sax, and most of the music was mellow mood tunes for divorcees at fern bars.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god you reminded me that my mom destashed and gave me all her 1970s clothing patterns that she used for herself and us as kids. They're hilarious. we're approaching a threshold for historicity in terms of clothing and I'm temped to make some of the pants suits for historical competition.

What's a fern bar?

I hated that polyester shit. I had to wear it as a child and it was scratchy. The '70s sucked. I knew it sucked even so young and the '80s were a relief.

I was a teenager in the 80s and it was terrible. I hated it. The clothes were awful, the music was mostly shit, books were expensive, the world was homophobic as fuck, we still expected to die in a nuclear war and there was no internet. Fuck that. The 90s were a vast improvement.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I was born in 1976 and I barely remember the 1980s so obviously if you're younger than that you have nothing to be nostalgic about.

Some of that 'fashion' was hilarious! And, like, you know, Valleyspeak was sooo totally radical. Some of that is just fun to think about and laugh at. Like the big-ass, teased, hairsprayed to wazoo hair styles? Those power suits with the shoulder pads that could double as football pads? What were we thinking?

Okay, yes, fuck Reaganomics, there's nothing funny about that or ignoring the AIDS crisis or the shuttle exploding (which apparently we learned nothing from) or any of the other terrible things that happened (assassinations, hijackings, Chernobyl, Tiananmen Square, oil spill, Iran-Contra Affair, etc.).

But along with the music and movies, other good things happened - the Berlin wall came down, the first artificial heart, Sandra Day O'Connor was put on the Supreme Court, the PG-13 rating came about, some awesome toys were made, some good books were published (and some really weird ones), some good television (yes, there were some awfully silly shows, too), and home computers took off.

So, yeah it wasn't just a time of Care Bears and synth-pop and people shouldn't idealize it the way they do (though people do this for other decades too), but it wasn't all bad.

Born in '67. I have nostalgia for the 80's, but it's because of what I was doing. Like - High school, getting married, moving across the country, discovering Seattle, moving *back* across the country, discovering Kansas City, computers, tattoos.... It was being a kid at home and then being a 'grown up' with the exSO, having cable for the first time in our lives, watching Showtime and HBO and MTV, hearing tons of new music, watching tons of new movies, fucking up our finances.....

It was a great fucking time.
But then, so were the 90's, 'cause here comes a ton of other new, awesome things.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Part of the appeal is that the 80s was possibly the last decade where pop culture was allowed to be unironically optimistic. Given that most of the fucked up parts of the 80s are still plaguing us today, it's not that much of a stretch to think that people would be nostalgic for a time when people thought the future was so bright that they gotta wear shades. Also, acid washed jeans were totally rockin.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I was born in 1967. When I was in high school my friends and I got deeply into 60s British rock because we hated pretty much all the music on the radio at the time. Now?

Well, The Joshua Tree is still amazing but I dislike most of the music, all of the fashion, and the thought of the politics and the pervasive threat of nuclear war can still make my heart race (in a bad way.) I cannot imagine anyone who actually remembers the 80s being nostalgic for them. Ugh

I feel like I'd be nostalgic for whatever decade I grew up in, regardless of it's relative goodness or badness. As it happens, I grew up in the 90s, so that's the decade I'm most nostalgic about. But I'm sure if I were a few years older I'd be nostalgic for the 80s.

The whole "kids on bikes" thing definitely does make me nostalgic, but we roamed all over the neighborhood on our bikes (or on foot) when I was growing up too, so maybe that's part of it. It's not like the 80s was the only decade where kids rode their bikes everywhere. Kids On Bikes as a trope just shows up more in 80s movies than any other era of movies for some reason.

I love how this secret dragged all the ancient users out of the woodworks. I guess I'm too conditioned to expect the older people in fandoms to be early millenials at max.
