Fic advice - accidental or indirect kisses?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-09 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a Five Times fic (5 times X kissed Y, and 1 time Y kissed X) and I'm kind of struggling with the first kiss. I've got the others all mapped out but I can't really settle on the first one. I want it to be a pretty innocent, low stakes thing with plausible deniability (because X is generally not a kissy person and does not want to be seen as such). So I thought I'd go for either an accidental kiss or an indirect kiss, but I'm not really sure of the specifics.

So I guess what I want to ask is, do you have any specific favourite scenarios or setups for accidental or indirect kisses? Any examples you can link to that might give me some inspiration?

Mistletoe (or something similar) is actually going to be the second kiss! Thanks for the suggestions!

Hmm, I hope I'm not misunderstanding this! But what I like with first kisses where it's indirect/accidental are:
-usually a physical action in which there is a tug of war almost, and then there is a slipping or misjudgment of movement in which bodies are pressed together and lips collide or come close to contact
-Person A turns around and Person B walks into them and they instead accidentally collide lips
-Person A was innocently going for a kiss on the cheek/nose as a sign of affection but Person B turns their head and their lips touch

In addition to all those, also just having X reach for something behind of beside Y, but due to miscommunication (or lack thereof) Y moves as X is moving in and X moves and boom! Kiss omg I didn't mean but your lips feel nice and I'm sorry can we try that again jk sorry

They get drunk and just want to try it out. Alcohol, the cause of and solution to all of life's problems. I mean, it works for just about every teenybopper in Britain so the scenario is hardly unrealistic or unfamiliar.

Alcohol is actually what leads to their third kiss hehe. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I've always been partial to the Lady and the Tramp kiss. But because that one is so well known, it might seem like a setup if spaghetti is involved and it will definitely be telegraphed, so maybe something like licorice strings during a movie or something?

For me, believability is key for this one. Accidental kisses can be tough to make believable, so I don't tend to be in favor of them, but never say never. The main way it actually works for me, if it's a lip kiss, is if one character is already moving in for a cheek kiss or something, but the other character doesn't realize what they're about to do and turns their head. Basically any other scenario just takes me out of the moment, because frankly, if you accidentally collide mouth to mouth with another person completely unplanned, I can almost guarantee that what you're both thinking is, "Ow, ow, jesus fuck, did I chip a tooth? Are any teeth loose? Is that blood? Is the other person okay? I cannot afford the dentist right now, fuck, fuck."

That said, if it doesn't need to be a kiss on the mouth, then you can totally do something sexy with a character accidentally stumbling and ending up with their mouth on someone's neck or collar bone. Because of the specifics of that scenario, I find it way more believable that it could happen without significant pain and/or dental damage. Also, personally I find it a lot sexier, tbh.

I'm generally in favor of mistletoe. Truth or dare can work, if it's believable that the characters would be playing it in the first place (which it often isn't). If all you need is lip-to-lip contact then CPR is always good. Or if there's a scenario in which they might need to kiss for a job, or to maintain their cover, or for science, then that works.

If it doesn't need to be on the mouth, then you can honestly make a cheek kiss pretty sexy and UST-filled if you write it right. Like, oh, it was just supposed to be an innocent expression of affection, but then the kisser moved in all slow, and there was raspy stubble, and hot breath, and someone smelled really good, and the kissee suddenly felt light headed and grabbed the kisser's arm to stabilize themselves, and by the time they pulled away it was like, oh boy that was a mistake.

Honestly, I feel like it's all in how you write it.

Thanks, this is really useful. I wasn't sure whether to do it as a kiss on the lips or on the cheek, but you make a good point about dental damage and pain lol. Thanks!

Halloween cooking shows

Which ones do you watch?

Re: Halloween cooking shows

well since it's currently marathoning anyway, I can admit to Halloween Baking Championship. Last year's covid precautions didn't hurt the show at all, it was still entertaining, but this year is super dumb and boring, I think I've watched one and a half episodes and don't care about any of the challenges or twists or bakers. It doesn't help that they're double-long, there's a reason cooking shows are an hour or less.

that's the only one tho. I don't care for wee children baking in any context and halloween wars makes me angry with all the absolutely wasted food. I don't care if you can eat straight up sugar, gum paste, and raw pumpkins, no one would want to. A food sculpture isn't edible, it's a waste. a nasty fondant-covered waste.

I like the Halloween Baking Championship a lot, especially Carla, I think she's so cool. I agree with the other poster about not being into the baking shows with little kids.

I started it and liked it (plus enjoyed hating a certain character) but then I got spoiled for the twist so now I don't have the biggest motivation to continue watching...

Watched the first episode with a friend. The show didn't hook us in, and we goofed off instead.

I enjoyed it far more than Bly Manor but less than Hill House. Flanagan really needs to cut back on the monologues. The lack of plot armor was refreshing.

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW

I am a bit confused why nobody mentioned what the "angel" was. Can't really blame religious fervor since even the non religious mentioned it. So I can only assume these people exist in a world like The Walking Dead. Only instead of no zombie media/lore, they don't have that creature.

For writing questions

Is this concept offensive?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
So I have this one sci-fi/futuristic fantasy setting concept I keep coming back to.

I have this idea of whole planets across the galaxies ruled by one particular countries.

But like the idea being that we discovered this one galaxy with like an insane amount of planets or something and all the countries of Earth started claiming planets.

I'm worried that this concept is offensive but it really appeals to me for some reason. I try to build the idea so that a wide variety of countries have planets of their own.

If I were to develop this idea into a thing I'd make it a sort of open world where people from certain countries not covered could write their own stories about them. Or like register the series with something like Kindle Worlds or just make it open to guest authors. I know that I would feel nervous writing about cultures and countries I didn't know much about.

Would there be something wrong with making a story like that?

I was going to attach this to the post about country planets since it involves a mention of potential racism but figured I'd just post it in it's own post because it has nothing to do with the OP of that post. Old war story follows here:

I remember this one time a person who was a big time writer of offensive stereotypes about indigenous people keep presenting a story to me and my friend group, and trying to bait us into saying that she should only have only white characters in her story.

"It's a story set in an old European town. Where can I fit a POC character in there?"
"Well, you could make it happen if you want. What are they going to be like?"
"The only slot I have available is for the household servant of the rich family."

And like after a whole thirty minutes of why she said that the only POC character in the story should be a domestic servant, I just raised my hands, and encouraged them to write some of the story first and see how it goes. The story never got worked on of course.
