I said it before but I'll say it again: nuance is for friends I can trust. Like yeah in fiction it might be good to explore, but also you're going to come across folks who managed to write a story where they're into the child-version of the character and kept their personality entirely unchanged, but now it's okay to fuck them. Whether or not that's illegal or not isn't what I'm concerned about. I'm just clicking the back-button and going "wtf..." to my personal friend group.

Comment secret OP

Well I'm primarily more concerned with the people who either harass people for things or spread around rumors to try and inspire others to harass them.

I've been online way too long to waste time if some stranger is talking about me to friends. As long as you're not going "here's their account. Call their work or tell them to kill themselves."

I mean, I imagine the extent of "exploration" happening here is people writing about characters with personalities they like, now with bangable adult bods. Which is, as far as I know, decidedly not-pedo. Failing to portray personalities accordingly developed is just bad writing, which fair enough I'm not interested in reading either but I won't lose sleep over it.

Also, there are lost of people who don't really change that much personality-wise from teenagerhood to adulthood. Like, I've known my oldest friend since we were about ten years old, and we're now in our thirties and he's basically just a more mature version of his younger self. His basic personality hasn't changed, he's just grown up and he's an adult now with an adult level of maturity and an adult mindset, and he's still got the same slightly irreverent sense of humor and love of puns that he had when he was a teenager.

Yeah, some people do change a lot, but plenty of others really don't.

A lot of things have characters who are essentially adults with a "15 years old" sticker on them because that's the age of the main audience. If they fight wars, live by themselves, and make other decisions only adults are expected to make IRL in canon, I'm not fussed about keeping their personalities and pasting a "25 years old" sticker over the old one.

This. If they are for all intents and purposes an adult in terms of their responsibilities and how they behave in canon, then there's not really much "aging up" to be done there personality-wise.

folks who managed to write a story where they're into the child-version of the character and kept their personality entirely unchanged, but now it's okay to fuck them.

I completely agree with the secret, and I'd be a huge hypocrite if I didn't because one of the characters in my current OTP needs aging up in order to be legal (which I strongly prefer). But also, you're right about this, and I'd totally make fun of these fics with my fandom friends, too, if there were a way for me to do it privately.

Well, I wouldn't bother making fun of fics where the aged up character was sixteen in canon and still seemed like they were sixteen in the fic, despite the fic telling us they're eighteen. I think that one's pretty understandable. But I've definitely come across plenty of fics where the "aged-up" character was sixteen in canon, and the fic claimed they were eighteen, but then they seemed more like they were eight. Honestly, I'm not even squicked by it anymore, just dryly amused.

"Nuance is for friends I can trust"? Why does this comment have four responses and no one has pointed out how fucked-up that is? Nuance should be your default. This is common sense. Holy shit.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think any of us know what the fuck they mean by that, and I don't think we cared enough to clarify. You seem to think you know what they mean, but I have no idea what it is you think you know.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was weird too?

"I could interpret this fic normally or. Or not try to interpret the authors motives at all. But nah nuance is for my friends. I'm going to look at the one dark thing in the tags and assume that's their kink regardless of how it's treated in story!"

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I'm not even sure what ayrt means by that? Are they saying they only reserve their most fucked up fics for friends who'll actually think about what they're reading? Or do they save their awful reactions for fics written by anyone they don't know? I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? You can't see why Op would prefer to keep things that can be used against them to a trusted group of people? Because let's face it, nuance is an invitation to get attacked by the black and white moral high ground brigade.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that actually what they were saying? If so, it was phrased poorly.
Like, I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but I understand why everyone else is confused by the wording.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what OP said. OP said that they are the black and white moral high ground brigade unless you're a friend of theirs.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
You should probably employ your critical thinking skills less discriminately. Saving it for friends only isn't the cunning plan that you think it is.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
nuance is for friends I can trust.

That...kind of makes me think you might still be a child yourself.
