As someone who posts their art on AO3:

  • I like to have all my work in one place - especially old stuff for fandoms I'm not in anymore.
  • I used to write long meta alongside my art, or story ideas, so it made sense to put it where the fic lives.
  • I left Tumblr and had nowhere to put my art where anyone would see it.
  • It's an archive, so I archive.

As for the "no image hosting" problem: yeah, that isn't ideal, but I still think it makes sense to archive art on AO3. If you write good img alts, even if the file disappears the fandom still has a record of its existence.

It would be good if AO3 could host at least thumbnails, though. 150×150px image would be enough to have a visual record of how an artwork looked.
