For most fanart, I don't really get it either. The entire layout of AO3 does not really work that well for art.

But I think, at least some of the works tagged there, will just be fics with art included. Which might be one reason to post on AO3: If you do art for a fic, you and the author can link to 'works inspired by'.

Another reason might be that the artists want a place to collect and post their NSFW art, since many platforms don't allow that anymore.

It does work if you make it "mobile friendly", most of the time.

And the last reason is why I use AO3 to post my NSFW since Tumblr doesn't allow that anymore.

I assume it's mostly just because it's a convenient long-term free hosting solution

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
AO3 doesn't host the image though. It has to be hosted somewhere else.

I find it much less weird than the fact that people post fanvids there.

But still, that is allowed by the TOS and I have no actual problem with it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Not an artist but: fans congregate there, and AO3 has plans to be a long-term fannish archive and defend against takedown notices. It might not be the best for discovery, but as a back-up and a place where it would at least get some views, it makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it to get around Tumblr not allowing nudity (if it's smutty fanart)?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wishing more artists would post there tbh. I wouldn't touch Tumblr or Twitter, especially fandom Twitter, with a ten foot pole. Only thing I miss is the art.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I guess they get more exposure that way, especially if they're also posting on more art-oriented sites.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's because I participate in AO3-based exchanges that allow people to gift each other with art. If you make art for someone, you have to post it on AO3 as its own separate work.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This, some exchanges and fests require you post to AO3.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I always leave comments on AO3 fanart I like, so maybe it's because of comments.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
AO3 is not only an archive for fanfiction. It's an archive for fanworks. Fanart is a fanwork.

It would be better if AO3 hosted the images since the idea of an archive is to preserve the content, and the content can't be preserved if the image is uploaded to a free site that closes shop in 6 months or 6 years or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This. The site was supposed to be for fanart too as it was created when strikthrough deleted not only writers ljs but artists too. The site still states it's for fan works and works hard to save fan videos. So I don't see why artists shouldn't be welcome too.

They really do need to offer hosting as so much work is being lost because other sites delete art willy nilly now. And artists are quickly loosing fan spaces to post.

AO3 isn't either, it is a campaign site to destroy the concept of copyright and to remove any mechanism of authors to protect their intellectual property, under the guise of being a fansite.

In my case is for exchanges and to post my nsfw art since I cannot use my Tumblr account anymore. There's some ways to make the image a bit more "mobile friendly", but it has helped me more than posting it on Tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Posting on AO3 means they get to use that sweet, sweet archive/tagging system.

Also, they might want their entire body of work collected altogether (fic, art, vids, whatever).

(Anonymous) 2021-10-23 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh yes! The tagging in AO3 > Tagging in Tumblr.

I find that most people are doing to boost exchanges or fests, but even without that I like it.

1. Because I participate in exchanges that are hosted on A03.

2. Because fandom congregates there.

3. Because AO3 allows porn and controversial subject matter and that's becoming more and more rare.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because it's a quick and easy way to reach your fanbase. That's the reason I've posted fanvids there.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's an archive, archive do not mean text only. So I can and I do. Mostly for fests, because ppl in AO3 do not really look at visual things.
But frankly there are less and less spaces for doing fanart comfortably. So I've stopped making it altogether

I wish more people did this, tbh. On Tumblr, so many users change their URL frequently, for each new fandom, each new fave, sometimes for the change of the seasons, and it's frustrating to read a fic that's a year old, come to an author's note of "XY did art for this chapter/I was inspired to write this by that art" and have the link lead to nowhere because the artist has switched blogs since then and the links are broken. With older fic, it's almost guaranteed that the art links will be gone. AO3 accounts are more permanent and the old links don't change even if someone creates a new pseud for their new fandom.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)

As someone who posts their art on AO3:

  • I like to have all my work in one place - especially old stuff for fandoms I'm not in anymore.
  • I used to write long meta alongside my art, or story ideas, so it made sense to put it where the fic lives.
  • I left Tumblr and had nowhere to put my art where anyone would see it.
  • It's an archive, so I archive.

As for the "no image hosting" problem: yeah, that isn't ideal, but I still think it makes sense to archive art on AO3. If you write good img alts, even if the file disappears the fandom still has a record of its existence.

It would be good if AO3 could host at least thumbnails, though. 150×150px image would be enough to have a visual record of how an artwork looked.
