And here I thought the worst people in the DC universe were Ivan the Terrible, Cesare Borgia, Attila the Hun, and Caligula.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Those 4, and also Darkseid

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the line-up for "worst of the worst"? Wow. History is so rich with possibilities even if you want to exaggerate someone's villainy. That's really disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It says "some of" the worst of the worst, so I assume there's more and these are just the most egregious selections

+1 That is a ridiculous line up.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, they did include some other less controversial villains like Genghis Khan, Jack the Ripper, Bonnie and Clyde, etc.

I think maybe Stalin and Caligula appeared in the background.

Marie Antoinette was an airhead
with no perception of the real world but seriously, evil? From everything I know about her she was a tad bimboish but deeply unhappy. Why the hell isn't Louis there instead? He had actual power in the shitshow that was pre-revolutionary France.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And you know what, fuck it. Brutus shouldn't be there either. Julius Caesar was an imperialist coloniser. Roman history was filled with people plotting and betraying. Nothing Brutus did was particularly out of the ordinary, except that the man he betrayed is admired by people for some reason.

Probably because they wanted to use people who the audience would recognize

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what puzzled me. I don't recall historical accounts of her being actively cruel for that era. She was guilty of being somewhat frivolous and privileged, but that was well within the range of normal for that time period and setting. She was raised to be isolated from how the average person lived, she didn't... I don't know, eat babies or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally the worst pick. A clueless, frivolous, rich girl, really?

she wasn't an airhead, imo, but like most royals picked favorites and politicians nobody in her new country was going to like (because yes, I think she favored austria/hre). if anyone was an airhead, it was her husband, considering he let her have some control over his ministers and he should have known better considering he was french and grew up french and knew the french were very picky and the situation was volatile and the hate for her was immediate.

Additional thoughts: I once read the TV Tropes page for a story where the villains were supposed to be the worst people in history. Martin Luther King Jr. somehow wound up in the group, and he had no idea why.

Also, I once read a Shazam/Kid Eternity crossover where the big teamup of villains throughout history included Benedict Arnold, and he secretly sided with the heroes because he wasn’t actually that evil.

Henry VIII of England was a whole lot worse than was considered usual for a late Medieval King. The guy was a total psychopath, he was up there with Stalin in his sadistic, paranoid, capriciousness. He deserves a mention on any list of history's true monsters, not just for the wife killing because that was just a symptom of his paranoia, for the way he turned his court and country into a bearpit of backstabbing and sudden murder. His daughters both deserve (dis)honourable mentions in that regard too, both of them.

Rasputin seems like a real-life supervillain to me, so I don't see the problem.

I was working on a headcanon that they aren’t actually the worst of the worst, Astra’s just bad at history* and picked people she had heard of.

Rasputin, at least, was pretty bad. Even if the stories about him are exaggerated, he's still a rapist and con artist and all round terrible person.

I'm generally okay with monarchs being considered villains, they tend to be terrible. And I only find con artists fun in movies, and honestly, I do think there's a strain of evil in trying to create a cult. Brutus is a dummy but not a villain. The worst of the worst? eh, probably only henry there, but rasputin if he even got his cult started stronger.

Marie Antoinette was 14 when she married and 18 when she became queen of France. She lived lavishly and had no financial handling capabilities. I don’t think she was necessarily evil but a victim of her circumstances.

Henry VIII fair enough. Absolute monster. The rest, not really.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-29 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The "let them eat cake" line was never said by Marie Antoinette and the entire smearing of her is enraging to this day.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-30 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
This thread is a ride I love it.

I was getting tired of LoT by this point, I find their shenanigans repetitive and sometimes insulting, but Antoinette was the last straw so I feel you OP
