168. Ya know what? While I am grateful for creating the amazing world that they did, I still refuse to believe that they had any right to do what they did at SDCC last year. I don't think I can ever forgive them for that horrible "joke" short and people like you need to learn that. NEWSFLASH. Not every Zutarian is batshit crazy. Some of us just prefer non canon couples. Some of us multiship everything that moves. Some of us just plain love the coupling and don't give a damn what anyone says. Not all of us are crazy and if you got to know us instead of writing all of us off as delusional idiots, you'd know this.

Except that person didn't imply anything of the sort? They pointed out that the joke was the character of Sokka saying something ridiculous, not anybody making any sweeping statements about the details of how Zutarians ship.

Agreed. After that and their insults on the Season 3 commentary I'm done with them and any other series they create. If you're going to treat your fans like crap than you don't deserve them in the first place.

I half agree. Like, I don't feel the way they treated the largest portion of their fanbase was fair, but I cannot leave the Avatar world worth anything. X3 I'm having far too much fun imagining the shipping possibilities and creating my own OCs (which, at the rate I'm going in trying to come up with a plot, may never see the light of day outside of RPs ^^; ). Despite their asshatery, I still have to given them a round of applause for creating such an imaginative world.

Either way, should I ever get the chance to meet them, I still have full intentions of chewing them out until I can get an apology on video so I can post it to YouTube. >_>

Basically, it got to the scene where Zuko is saving Katara's like and they go "Wow, Zuko nearly sacrificed his life for Katara, then she goes off and runs to another guy. *Laugh* Zutarians" (emphasis mine and I'm sure I'm paraphrasing). Yes, they stopped laughing at the ship and took a stab at the shippers. That is crossing the line and it is horrid.

You didn't hear it in the SDCC '08 joke short? Oh wait, you were probably too busy laughing at other shippers' expense to care. I heard it loud and clear, "Anyone who ships Zutara is doomed to have failed relationships" (note: may or may not be paraphrasing, but I still remember the general message). I don't remember which character said that, but it is still very hurtful. Just because I ship a particular ship doesn't mean I'm incapable of finding someone I love and can maintain a healthy relationship with.

Watch the damn video again and listen for it. THAT STATEMENT is why I cannot blindly worship Bryke like I did before. Like I said, I still respect the amazing amount of work that had to have gone into Avatar, but the way they treated the largest portion of the fanbase is horrible.

I think you're reading way too much into it and taking this fictional pairing way too personally. So they made of your ship. It's not the end of the world. I still don't remember getting "u suck at relationships", I may have to watch it again, but do you honestly think they were trying to say "IF YOU SHIP ZUTARA YOU CANNOT BE IN A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP"? I think that's taking it a little far. It's a freaking cartoon pairing. Come on now.

O RLY? Then why was the main focus on Zutara? Why not focus on a crackship like Sokkla or Ty Laru or Hakursa, or something else? That joke short added with the jab at Zutarians on the finale commentary was not appropriate. You do not treat your fans like that. Instead of being intelligent men and showing the shipping neutral reunion of Zuko and Ursa which was cut, they instead poke fun at the largest portion of the fan base. Not smart and extremely rude.

You are taking this WAY too seriously. The comment obviously wasn't intended to horrifically offend anyone. Also, Zutara IS non-canon, so Zutara fans are going to have to deal with a little adversity, ESPECIALLY among show creators, I would think. If you're not willing to put up with that...then don't watch the show.

P.S. You said yourself that Zutara is "the largest portion of the fan base" so that's why the focus was there. Relax and enjoy the show.

To be honest....I doubt they're AWARE of "crackships" except the ones that come up on whatever vanity googling they're doing. As I said in my comment below, I don't think they have as sophisticated an understanding of fandom as folks give them credit for. I know they keep a vague eye on ASN and the big, general coms, but they probably don't even know what "Sokkla" is.

Again, seriously not trying to cause trouble! I just feel badly that this has upset so many people, when I think it's mostly just that the staff don't know a lot about fandom and how it works. Which isn't great, but also isn't deliberately mean. <:)

Hey! Don't know if you know me, but I've seen you around and you seem pretty cool, which is actually why I'm responding. I don't want to start anything, just sharing my thoughts.

I think, as someone who's been on both sides of the industry/fandom divide, that Mike and Bryan's sin here was mostly one of miscalculation. They're not particularly sophisticated in their understanding of fandom (most of these industry guys aren't) I think they legitimately DID NOT anticipate the impact their joke video would have. Probably they thought the Zuko/Katara folks would be happy to be acknowledged and to have their friends' fanart animated and to be at the center of so much official attention, even if in the form of a parody.

Now, I'm not saying I think they went about it in the smartest possible way -- I certainly would have advised against it if I'd been in a position to do so -- but I don't think that their INTENT was as mean-spirited as it's often been taken to be.

THAT SAID! I understand that intent only counts for so much and that this kind of thing can really suck -- I wasn't thrilled about the infamous "delusional" comment from JKR a few years ago. I just...I don't know. Avatar's a great show and the staff is full of awesome people who worked really really hard over many years to put it together. Having met some of them (though, as I said, not Mike and Bryan) I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume that anything hurtful was done out of ignorance, not malice.

PS: Selfishly? I would really have loved it if they'd made fun of MORE ships. Like mine! Official Jet/Zuko-mocking voiced by Avatar staff? SIGN ME UP man, I am not even kidding. Not to belittle your own situation, I'm just looking at all of this from the perspective from a much smaller ship that NEVER gets this kind of attention, good or bad.

It probably is a case of misunderstanding. I just, it still bugs the hell out of me with this whole thing. What kind of fan would want attention to them by being told that they're crap for shipping a certain pairing? Had that line not been in there, I'd be laughing with everyone else. After that, I cannot even listen to their commentary on the DVDs anymore.

Yeah, intent is a hazy area. I remember a conversation on racebending not too long ago about intent and it got really insane (and kinda made my inbox go BOOM with comment notifications XD). It's just as bad in the joke short situation. It still hurt no matter the intent and I really want Bryke to understand this somehow.

And I'd have loved some other ships being made fun of too. It wasn't right for Zutara to get the brunt of the flames when it already gets that from the fandom at large. I can has Sokkla love? :D And, is it me, or is Taang completely ignored by Bryke? *pout*
