There's a Turkish show called Magnificent Century about her, I think it was from 2011/2012 or so? I've only seen clips of it on youtube so I don't know how good it might be, but when I read her name I remembered stumbling across it there. The bits I saw of it were fascinating!

There we go! I was going to say Turkish soap operas are so vast and encompassing, there's bound to be one based off of this!

That show and the prequel? sequel? where all over my dash a few years ago and still pop up from time to time. If it's still out there, OP shouldn't have any problems finding it.

I was just coming here to say, "this exists. This show exists". And it's pretty enjoyable. It was actually on US Netflix for quite awhile.

It's on youtube with english subtitles and can confirm there's still a bit of english-language fandom around!

I mean, the Roman/Byzantine empire and Alex the M's empire cover the same geographical ground, so I don't see why it wouldn't be doable with the Ottomans lbr the islamic part would be the real issue in the west. But I agree that portrayal of the various ethnic groups would, perhaps should, mean people are thoughtful about it (i...don't really think POC as a term is useful in this context), but again that's not really different for the roman or macedonian shows either.

The Ottomans would be a problem because they perpetrated genocide and have never apologised.

...as opposed to what other empires? I'm cool with just never valorizing empires, but you seem to be setting them apart from the Byzantine and Roman empires I mentioned which operated in the same area and also slaughtered people culturally...why? And moreoever, why would you not be able to depict that honestly?

I dunno: just skimming her in Wiki and the 'Sultanate of Women' - sounds like it's an AWESOME idea to tell her story as well as the other 'Sulanates' of that time.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
There was a BBC Radio drama about her decades ago; but I can't remember anything about it beyond the bare fact.

This would be a perfect use of "color blind casting" and pick a Han Chinese or Korean or other non-European actress who stands out among Turkish people.

I'll have to check out that Turkish production mentioned above, that sounds neat.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a really dumb idea.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Your opinion has been noted.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, it’s a pretty good one.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it such a great idea to change the real person's specific ethnic and national origin (which is not really part of the Euopean West or today's US)...? It's not like Western media is so great about Eastern European representation...Not all white's are created equal (or at least equally worthy of representation) in the eyes of Western media.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly misread the anon because and thought they meant an “inspired by” story of an outsider to the Ottoman Empire, who would be cast by someone Han Chinese or Korean, not a direct portrayal of the real person. And I still think something like that could work.

But you do have a point that this is a bit different than what usually gets color-blind casting, and it may not be a great idea to do anon’s actual idea.

Eh. I don't think that would work well here. She was Polish, and famed for her pale skin and red hair and one of the standout aspects of her political career is that she maintained a favorable relationship between the Ottoman empire and Poland, specifically thanks to her background.

Now mind you, other ladies in the harem came from a variety of countries, so there'd be plenty of opportunities for diverse casting.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a Turkish series about her. It's fairly large budget and well known.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-06 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ottoman Empire isn't exactly POC. It was a huge military power that subjugated and assimilated other nations. I wouldn't call it problematic.
