It's kind of weird to me how many people still apparently hold deep, deep anti-RTD grudges on here. It's funny because I haven't seen - at least on here - any pro-RTD posts, it's purely people saying they still hate RTD. And not just that they still hate RTD but they hate him enough that they want the show to crash and burn so they can mock people who enjoyed RTD's earlier run. That appears to be the consensus.

And, I mean, of course not everyone is going to like RTD. That's just a fact. I think at this point it's been conclusively shown that it's impossible to make Doctor Who that everyone loves. So, good for you, I guess.

everyone has their personal opinions. He's my least favorite showrunner. But even if I loved him, I don't want the show moving backwards. I love Moffatt, and I would not want him brought back as showrunner.

Sure, of course everyone is entitled to their personal opinions. No one has to like RTD. I'm not sure that appointing RTD necessarily means going backwards - the landscape of television has changed dramatically since 2005 and RTD has basically done nothing but make critically acclaimed shows since leaving the show the first time, so I think it could be really interesting to see how he adapts.

But no matter what he does, whether he succeeds or he fails, of course it's not going to be to everyone's taste. It's not surprising to me that some people wouldn't want RTD back. What's surprising to me is how simultaneously vituperative and one-sided it is. A lot of it is also people who seem to be still really angry at Moffat not being popular - and, just as you say that everyone has their own personal opinions, people are allowed not to like Moffat.

In my experience, the anti-Moffat movement back in the day was also extremely vituperative and one-sided--to the point that I had to disengage from the fandom entirely and still can't bring myself to actually interact, it was so ubiquitous. Even nice things about other eras were always tinged with a "remember when DW was actually good lol" note. It sucked.

So my feelings on RTD's return are, yeah, partially fueled by bitterness about how awful that time was, and partially remembering all the things I hadn't enjoyed about RTD's writing that fandom at the time made it impossible to talk about. Now that the pendulum has swung the other way, it's a relief, honestly.

(And there's always been a "they changed it, now it sucks" quotient to new showrunners, but modern fandom makes everything worse)

Yes, of course it's true that the anti-Moffat movement was vituperative - I think the fandom got very vicious in general for a good while (and I think the Sherlock crossover element made the whole thing a lot worse). But I also think that it's basically a good thing that time has passed and it's gotten less bitter and venomous. I enjoy the ability to talk about different peoples' runs on the shows with nuance and acknowledge that we like or dislike different eras of the show, which is why it's weird and kind of a bummer for so many people to treat it as their opportunity to finally destroy RTD and his fans once and for all.

I hate him because he allowed horrible abuses to happen on his watch. I think that's a pretty legit reason to hate him and not want him back to let it happen again.

This.

TPTB at the BBC backed Barrowman through that entire mess, so you shouldn't be watching anything they're involved with anymore.

Not AYRT

But I don’t. So if this was supposed to be some kind of gotcha that you didn’t expect anyone would actually do, then it doesn’t work.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-10 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
DA, but why would you even give a fuck about what’s happening on DW if you’re ignoring it on principle? You can waste your time however you want, but you’ve chosen a particularly pointless way to do it.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-10 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I give a fuck because I avoided DW for a reason, them knowing and doing nothing about the abuse. Now they’re rehiring the main guy that enabled the abuse. That’s a pretty obvious reason to care if you have half a brain. And it’s completely irrelevant to whether I currently watch DW or not. It’s not wasting my time to care about RTD coming back, because caring about this kind of thing is consistent. And it’s not like I’m spending all my days picketing outside BBC headquarters, so trying to pretend giving a damn is a “waste of time” is absurd.

I know you’re being a disingenuous ass, and you have no actual point, but you’ve continued to come up with nothing in your attempt at some kind of gotcha. The way you’re reaching and failing to find some way to feel superior is pathetic.

Missed the DA thing somehow, so disregard the “continued to...” part. The rest of my comment still stands.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-10 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No, seriously, other than whining about shows you don’t watch on networks you don’t watch to people you don’t know on the internet, what are you doing to combat abuse in entertainment? Picketing the Beeb would actually be a remotely useful response that might have the slightest chance of actually affecting the world in a positive way, so I don’t know why you think anyone was accusing you of that. But keep making this issue all about you and your feelings. It’s super useful and doesn’t make you look like a self-centered drama queen at all.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-10 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m not giving any business to the BBC, because I don’t want to support them. It’s not really a form of combatting the abuses that have already happened, because there’s nothing I alone could do. As a victim of sexual abuse, I know that one voice alone can’t do much. But I can at least not give them the time of day by watching DW. That doesn’t mean that I’m suddenly not allowed to care that they’re making another shitty decision that can hurt someone by rehiring RTD. There’s absolutely no logic to what you’re going on about, pretending that I have to watch DW to care about a bad decision the creators made that could affect real people. Especially because the decision has nothing to do with something that would require me to watch it, like if I were to complain about a storyline. I’m going to boycott Kellogg’s products after their bs, but that doesn’t mean I give up any ability to care if they do a separate shitty thing down the line.

And I said “it’s not like I’m picketing outside BBC headquarters” because you said merely caring that RTD is being brought back is a waste of time, and I was giving an example of something that would actually require giving time that could be wasted. Most people don’t waste any time giving a thought to any one thing, it’s just you who takes so long to think that you waste your day. Either way, I never said you implied I was literally picketing them. Did you even read my comment?

And “whining about shows you don’t watch”? I didn’t, but you’re free to think whatever you want. Just check your schedule to make sure you don’t have an appointment you might miss today.

“But keep making this issue all about you and your feelings. It’s super useful and doesn’t make you look like a self-centered drama queen at all.”

Is that the best you can do? Wow, that’s sad. So everyone that doesn’t watch DW because of this, or is upset about this decision, is making this “all about themselves and their feelings”? Pretty sure that’s the people who are either ignoring the problems RTD caused, or admitting they don’t give a shit about any of it, because they want their fave back as a showrunner. It’s all about their hard-on for the way RTD wrote Who. Or they’re just callous and lacking in self-awareness like you. I would be making this all about me if tweeted about this every day, but I don’t. I just don’t watch DW.

But because you still need to grasp at straws to pretend you have some kind of superiority over others, you’ve decided to twist “doesn’t watch DW, but still isn’t thrilled that the enabler is being brought back” into “making a big spectacle and directing all attention onto themselves”. That’s not how it works, but of course we both know you’re just making shit up as you go anyways lol.

I care about the actors, who are real people and don't deserve to be abused. I think that's more important than "haha funny alien man makes me smile"

You're pitching a fit because you don't want to think about it. Full stop. That's why you're mad. "Oh, but what are you actually doing?" I'm bringing attention to it because I can't fucking walk. You just don't like it because it makes you uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-10 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't, either, but I also like. Don't want the guy who also defended it and let it happen returning to cause more harm, so shove those gotchas up your ass and choke on it.
