Tbh this is why trans headcanons annoy me. Not because they happen - trans away - but because they're based on factually incorrect assumptions like "I'm a cis woman and trans mens' facial hair, physiologically speaking, works the same as mine, right?"

Oof.

You’re saying it doesn’t?

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not if they're taking hormones, surely.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP and this is my only comment in this thread--I'm cis, and apparently my T levels are normal for a cis woman, but since my late teens I've had brown-black beard and mustache stubble at night after shaving in the morning; I've never gone more than two days without taking it off, but occasionally I'll miss a stray hair that gets an inch or so long before I pull it.

Tldr; cis women can (unfortunately in my case, I hate mine) grow beards.

Idgaf about people's headcanons, especially not in comparison to how respectful of RL people's gender identities they are, which is the important bit.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I should have been more clear. What I meant was that all trans men will surely experience an effect on their facial hair growth from taking T? I know we all have different facial hair growth levels at our bodies' unaltered hormone levels.

No one is saying cis women can't grow beards?

The issue is in assuming a cis woman's facial hair pattern bears anything but coincidental resemblance to a trans man's facial hair and basing a trans headcanon on that single detail as though it means anything. Look how OP phrases "his facial hair is like my AFAB facial hair" as though it's proof to back up her headcanon as though men with that facial hair pattern are more likely to be AFAB or trans. Which is simply untrue

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Turn it around. Imagine if a male OP were saying that a female character's sparse mustache is like his, a cis man, and therefore his headcanon is that she's MTF AMAB, based on that one reason.

You'd question what kind of assumptions he's making and whether he knows cis women can have facial hair, wouldn't you? And whether he knows that some trans women have none? And whether he realizes that's not an indicator of anything but coincidence?

OP

I don’t think the Infinity Train provides hormones.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You made a general statement though.

This. It also creates odd expectations about how AMAB facial hair works. Some men just can't grow any or much. Some cis women actively grow facial hair.

I'm not against trans headcanons, but this seems like a very weird thing to base one on. OP, I'd suggest you reexamine that aspect. This doesn't mean you have to change your headcanon, but you do need to be aware you have bias in play.

I'm a cis woman and always had "mustache" due my PCOS. Thanks for the masks I don't have the need to remove them, but I had to use an epilator machine before so it wasn't too noticeable.

People who don't like trans headcanons (oh, excuse me, "have a problem with" trans headcanons. You're not against transness at all, you're ~concerned) take them far, far more seriously than people who make them.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
This ^^

(Anonymous) 2021-12-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a weird assumption. I know cis guys who can't even grow facial hair, and cis women with full on beards if they don't shave.

Just to all the people with upper lip hair they don't want

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Do NOT shave. That will give you 5'o clock shadow. Hair grows back thicker in appearance. Either get threaded or learn how to do that. Or use wax. I taught myself how to thread my upper lip and it's great! Avoiding any bumps and certainly the shadow. (This applies if you're trying to remove hair. And if the strands are too strong at first for threading -- stronger than eyebrow hair, I recommend wax strips until the hair growing back in comes in thinner).

As for this secret, I'm just gonna say that I (cis lady) have more facial hair than my brother sometimes. Some dudes don't grow facial hair. Some chicks do. I think there's possibly a genetic predisposition, amongst other factors that contribute to it. I'm sure people base their headcanon on other things that perhaps even more tenous things. But just a thing to keep in mind, I guess.

Re: Just to all the people with upper lip hair they don't want

I agree about threading or waxing!!! I go to a threading salon and I love the smooth clean feeling from a threading session! I know it would be cheaper to learn to thread myself so I should try it soon. I've done waxing too and it's nice, but it sucks when I pull and not all of the hairs get removed. I can't rewax too much since I don't want to damage my skin.

I got mine lasered. I was surprised how cheap it was. Highly recommend.

Yeah, my friend in college didn't realize that some women grew facial hair and my hairy friend and I had to disabuse her of that notion.

There's very few instances where "here's my reasons why this character is [insert minority here]" doesn't give me bad vibes. And not because I instantly think the person who has those headcanons is a bad person or doing so out of malicious intent (often times they're the minority themselves). But too often it comes with not so nice assumptions and stereotypes.

I mean there is rarely ever any listed reason for seeing a male or female character as trans (when they weren't originally of course) that's not going to ding somebody off as reductive, relying on (often harmful) stereotypes, or comes with icky unintended consequences (such as implying all trans man have feminine traits/they can't pass so therefore a male character having any traits that are read as feminine then being a listed reason for the HC...there's just a lot of baggage with that).

I'd much rather just stick to "I headcanon this because I like the story/it makes them more relatable to me/I find it comforting or cathartic or important to write about or read about or think about characters I like having similar experiences to me" and call it a day.

Yeah, this. I wouldn't have any problems with things like trans headcanons if it were just something like that. I have problems when it's stuff like "this female character is muscular and strong so she must really be AMAB" or "this male character has long hair and is kind of femme-presenting so he's a trans guy" because like you said, it plays right into stereotypes that affect real people and that's not cool.

I find this interesting because I just watched the new version of West Side Story with a very obviously trans Anybodys.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
this is hilarious bc it comes across as "i, secretmaker who isnt trans, saw a a male character who isnt drawn with much facial hair, and decided that he is ftm because i grow body hair." (this isnt malicious it just made me laugh)

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is a cool headcanon with a neat detail that ties into it.

I am all for more trans characters with "problematic"/messy personalities, especially if they're FTM, even if it's just a headcanon. It's so much better than being babied all the damn time.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about trans headcannons is there's no acceptably good reason for them. But simultaneously there's no need for a good reason. So folks with trans headcanons are "allowed" to have them but God help us all if anyone gives specifics. Something must have sparked your interest but don't you DARE tell me what it was.

It's kind of weird really.
