Music Genres

What are your favorite and least favorite music genres?

Favorite: Movie/Game/TV scores (if that counts), instrumental post-rock, classic rock, alternative...folk? (best I got).

Least favorite: Most country, rap, and pop after the 00s. Granted, I probably just need more exposure to it considering all that hear from these genres is on the radio.

It totally counts. And I totally agree. Scores are the best.

Favorites: I love many styles, but here are my top 5 absolute favorites

Power and symphonic metal. I like something like 95% of the artists and a vast majority of their songs. The styles just work for me.

Scores and trailer music. More than half of my music is either soundtracks/scores or trailer music.

Celtic/viking/pagan music

Choral anything

Latin.

Least favorites: Jazz and blues and related styles. I'll occasionally like a jazz track, but for some reason for the most part it is one of the few styles I just don't like.

Death metal/thrash metal/any other similar style. Without some sort of melodic element, it just sounds like unpleasant noise to me.

Favourites: folk, blues, and bluegrass

(I was so absurdly pleased when sea shanties got popular earlier this year.)

Least favourites: bubblegum pop, pop country, jazz

I love folk music too, and sea shanties are awesome. It is nice to see them becoming more mainstream so they are easier to find.

Classic rock is always top billing, specifically 60s/70s rock. I guess a bunch of the other things I like fall into just the basic "rock" category or something, unless they fall into the "folk balladeer" category.

Least favorite... I don't care for a lot of country, but there are some good artists in the genre. Really that's true of every genre.

Re: Music Genres

Classic rock is awesome. I'm very, very picky about country. I don't hate the genre because there are several songs and artists I really love. But I hate a lot of the genre.

Re: Music Genres

According to Spotify my favorites are: dance pop, pop, Europop, post-teen pop, electropop, bubblegum dance, alternative rock, candy pop, New Wave pop, indie pop, hip pop, art pop, UK pop, urban contemporary, girl group and permanent wave.

Least favorite has to be pickup trucks, girls, drinking and patriotism brand of bro country. Completely insufferable.

Re: Music Genres

Ugh, that type of country is the absolute worst. Then again, I dislike the really sexist extremes of certain rap too where girls are possessions and also terrible people not worthy of anything but being used and where the best way to assert one's masculine superiority is with guns.

Re: Music Genres

I usually find individual songs or artists and like/dislike them, so I’m not the best judge of genres, but I like a bunch of things. Classic rock, europop, dance pop, reggae, trance, electronica (guess what decade I was born in), symphonic/melodic metal, whatever Chris de Burgh counts as, whatever Nox Arcana counts as, jazz, swing, some electrojazz (some of it is too discordant or repetitive), those 80s heavy synth fantasy songs, some folk/traditional.

Least favourite would be screamo/thrash/heavy metal, certain types of jangly, overly repetitive pop, and whatever genre it is where some teenage-to-middle-aged sleazy dude sings about everything he’d do to get the hot woman into bed (I have a seething hatred for Tom Jones and that stupid ‘I’d jump on a grenade for you’ song from Bruno Mars. Oh, you’d die for me? That’s nice honey. Could you hurry up about it? I could probably find a grenade if you need one).

Same with you about screamo/thrash/heavy metal. I like metal, but only when it has a melodic background to it. Power and Symphonic metal have that metal sound but also have other elements to it.

And ugh, I hate that Bruno Mars song too. No one owes you love, certainly not that level of love. So she doesn't love you as much as you love her. She's allowed her own feelings, and she isn't a bad person for not being as obsessive as you are.

That's really not fair to Bruno Mars. ;-) He's in a really good group with Anderson Paak now called Silk Sonic.

Favorites: Rock - mostly alt rock, college rock, indie rock, folk rock, singer-songwriter, post-punk. And 70s soul, and I like a lot of pop music.

Least favorite: prog rock, I guess, and all of that very overbearing, pretentious kind of classic rock and metal.

Re: Music Genres

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I forgot post-punk as a fave! (I'm the anon below you.)

Re: Music Genres

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Favorite: '80s pop, New Wave/Synth-pop/Modern rock/Alternative/College radio/Goth & Deathrock genres of the 1980s, and shit from Now that sounds like Then. ;)

Least favorites: Opera, cheesy R&B from the 1990s and up, really weak Hip Hop from the 1980s and up, corny Country & Western (what I call C&W Lite) from any decade, any J-pop/K-pop/boy band from the 1990s and upwards, Symphonic Metal, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Grindcore (any harsh, growling or operatic form of Metal), Hardcore Punk full of idiotic guido-looking MF's and their crew.

Sorry. I'm an old bitch with good taste. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: Music Genres

I won't waste my time trying to convince you of good metal, let's just enjoy a nice road trip with Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, and modern synthwave. That'll still get us well over 12 hours of music before we argue, right?

Re: Music Genres

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I could road trip with you also and we'll listen to lot of Siouxsie, the Cure, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim, etc. Where do you stand on noisy New York bands like Sonic Youth and Swans? I am very pro. Also fond of 80s college radio standards like R.E.M., Replacements, Robyn Hitchcock, Yo La Tengo, etc.

I think we cold hang.

Re: Music Genres

Favorite: Alternative, Folk, Folk Rock, Indie (if indie counts as a genre). I also often enjoy Pop when it's heavily mixed with any of the afore mentioned genres, but am much less likely to enjoy it on its own.

Least Favorite: Trance, the majority of the Rap I've heard (which isn't much tbh), any subsets of Metal that involve sounds one might struggle to distinguish from pure deafening noise.

Other: I don't dislike purely instrumental music, but I'm completely uninterested in like 98% of it.

Re: Music Genres

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Favorite: Pretty much anything

Least favorite: post 90s rap

It just sounds shit to me. Now and again I'll hear an artist described as groundbreaking, listen to it and it's all the same garbage. Kanye West is the worst. Most people can talk like they're a few IQ points short of sentient, walk like they've soiled themselves, and write lyrics like a trying to be edgy guy on deviantArt in the mid-noughties.

Favorites: Metal (especially doom and non-fashy black), shoegaze, experimental, goth, industrial, some hip-hop, traditional country, bluegrass, jazz, classic punk, post-punk, and indie rock, classic R & B, and while I hate that people think World Music is a genre, but yeah, that. I'm eclectic. I'll give anything a try.

Least favorites: Pop that's too bouncy and squeaky. Slick commercial pop-country. Too much autotune.

Re: Music Genres

I like everything except country, rap, 21st century pop in all iterations, and improv jazz.

I feel bad not being able to get into rap but it's such a subgenre of itself now; I like the whole concept of spoken word street poetry, rhymes, fast rapping, etc, but what I don't like is whatever sound is layered underneath the rap itself. Gangsta-style where there's only some sort of drumbeat and that weird whistling sound sort of like a theremin but not really? I can't, sorry. Nope. All the no. Stronger melody lines, guitars, actual piano/sax/trumpet/literally any other instrument? Yeah okay now we good. So a lot of hip-hop, house, etc is great and doesn't read as "rap" to me like 90s gangsta rap.

And we all know improv jazz is hard on anyone who likes a hooky melody. I guess I like me some hooks.

Favourite: South African jazz, esp African Jazz Pioneers, Hugh Masekela

Lest favourite: Muzak
