Favorites: Metal (especially doom and non-fashy black), shoegaze, experimental, goth, industrial, some hip-hop, traditional country, bluegrass, jazz, classic punk, post-punk, and indie rock, classic R & B, and while I hate that people think World Music is a genre, but yeah, that. I'm eclectic. I'll give anything a try.

Least favorites: Pop that's too bouncy and squeaky. Slick commercial pop-country. Too much autotune.

What's shoe gaze?

DA

It’s a subgenre of indie and alt-rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. (Got this part from Wikipedia)

But it’s called shoegaze because artists who performed the subgenre were the types of performers who looked down while they sang and performed the instruments, instead of looking up(and especially instead of going OTT rock out). So they were “gazing at their shoes”, so to speak.

NAYRT

Shoegaze is the album "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine, and other music which is consciously trying to sound like the album "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine

I've never been as into shoegazer as I have other related subgenres (emo, punk, ska, industrial, new wave, post-wave, synthwave, grunge, etc) mad props for knowing and loving your shoegaze for what it is.

Having been in the music industry during the 90s, I remember these acts distinctly and the "only look at their shoes while playing" was entirely apt. Shy grunge nerds who didn't know what showmanship was or that it was typical of musicians to try to make eye contact with their audience still knew how to make damn fine moody buzz music.

I don't care about showmanship in this genre, I care about power and that full-body sound experience. My Bloody Valentine could sound like they were literally crawling into your chest cavity.

...I forgot I wasn't on reddit and couldn't upvote lmao. So instead you get a comment that approves of such a fine mental image.
