Omfg, ALL OF THIS. Sure, you can put a couple pots on a back stoop with some cherry tomatoes or something, but that's not a meal replacement.

I hate recipes, too, that call for some random seasoning or whatever like - sure, lemme buy a 6 dollar, weeny bottle of whatever so i can put a 1/4 teaspoon in this dish.

Omg, making your own bread is HARD, especially if you don't have decent equipment, especially if you've never done it before, especially if your oven doesn't heat evenly (or at all).....

On the opposite side are the ones who are all 'just buy a big bag of rice and some beans, you can have that for meals for two weeks! Sorry, but nobody should be subject to the same boring meal over and over and over and over.....

It really sucks that there are never coupons for fruit or vegetables, unless it's canned mush.

I've made my own bread and I didn't think it was so much hard as very, very time consuming. Don't do it on a day when you have other stuff to do.

I have, too; it helped that someone was giving me pointers, because I had no clue about salt fucking with yeast, or making sure your wet ingredients were warm, etc. Inexperienced bakers would, I think, have only a 50/50 chance of getting it really right the first time (and if you get it wrong, you've wasted so much time and money!).

The last couple time I tried to make bread, I got no rise at all, despite doing everything 'right' - I dunno if I had crappy yeast or what.

Look for a bread machine on FB marketplace or a freecycle group. People are always giving them away or selling them for cheap. They do work pretty well, but yeah, it's cheapest just to make french bread.

Homemade bread comes out really nice and stays fresh longer, IMO.

I have had a bread machine, and i really liked it. But at this stage, I don't eat much bread at all, so I just buy these nice half-loaves from the grocery. They have a nice variety and it's enough for what I want without it going bad when I don't eat it. I get two or three on sale and sling 'em into my freezer. Same with butter - if it's on sale (and it's usually really a good bargain), i get the most i can afford and freeze the extra.

DA

Lmao rice and beans was (and culturally is) the staple I grew up with every day (and yes you get bored, but nowadays, after much . Chicken was usually the meat. Done different ways on different days. And if we had the money we'd get meat. In college I learned the embarrassing way that skirt steak was not in fact the best cut. It was the best we could afford at the time lol. Plus it has no fat! So it was healthy too!

Anyway, as a kid I couldn't appreciate rice and beans. As an adult, it's truly a tummy filler and delicious when done right. But like anything, it can get boring.

I loathe beans of every single kind and will not eat them.
I object mainly to people who act like 'just eat rice and beans forever' is fine and if you're poor you don't deserve to ever eat anything different, or spend money (gods forbid!) on a nice cut of meat or a wonderful fresh salad or fruit.

Skirt steak isn't a *great* cut, but cooked right it's very tasty.

I agree with all of this(especially with loathing all beans)!

Like, yeah, making your own bread will be cheaper... once you buy bread flour, yeast, a big mixing bowl, parchment paper, and a bread pan. And then spend hours making it.

To say nothing of how doing that would also presume you have a kitchen that's big enough and has enough counter space to give you the room to make all of that. And not everyone does. 'Cause, y'know, they're poor, and can't afford homes with huge kitchens.

Right? Or even a *working* kitchen, because I have a decent (inexpensive) oven, and it doesn't heat quite evenly; a shitty rental that's been used and abused by people for decades? You're LUCKY if the oven works.

and they always use the price of the 1/4th teaspoon to calculate how cheap the dish is, it drives me nuts!

that's why i love "aaron and claire" on youtube, yes you need to buy in some unusual things for korean/japanese dishes so it's not something to start when you're flat broke, but those ingredients are used in tons of recipes that they suggest and they always make sure to point out where you can substitute or leave out things entirely. often they will create alternative simple versions of the more complicated recipes too, in case the whole thing is too much effort.
my low energy depressed poor ass is so in love with them TT

HA, omg, yes.

That's the much better way to show people how to cook interesting/different stuff!

Yeah, I find a lot of spices are worth the money because they can be used in so many different things. Chili powder and cumin and garlic powder and Italian seasoning and oregano are worth it because you can put those in a million recipes, for example. It's the super-obscure stuff that's only used in very specific things that isn't worth buying.

I actually love Japanese cooking because as long as you've got soy sauce, mirin, cooking sake, and dashi powder on hand, you can cook just about anything and if you get a big bottle then it lasts forever.
